A piece of the puzzle to the new shop starts this morning, when we lower in a new septic tank which will also be able to handle a bathroom in the shop (puzzle piece) LOL actually we needed to replace the system here anyway as it was a old septic system that has lived out its life. The plan was to start on the shop around June 1st time frame but when i got pushed back that pushed back the person who is helping me with the shop so hopefully speaking i can have some pics by the end of July of new building, can not wait i am not used to having a place to work on things and the little garage we have now is a overgrown storage unit.

Here are a few pictures of the what i have been doing through the summer months, along with many other jobs :) I have moved to just outside the Spokane city limits and the home we are in now had a old style septic system that had out lived it days, so it was time for a new one and i wanted to make sure it will be big enough so that i can have working bathroom in my shop. 632

Also here is a few shots of the shop to be torn down and the new site area that is being worked on just behind the old one, the old garage is supposed to be demolished this Friday.635636637638639640

It is 7:00 AM as i type and the building is scheduled to come down at 7:30 this morning so i will get more pics of demolition, sorry about my lack of ability to post last set of pictures very well, i will work on this ;) Rick, i wish that i had a date to give but things have been pushed back so much this year, i am afraid to say anything as i do not want to jinx myself LOL but i am moving forward. One thing that has slowed me is trying to do all this while not taking any time off from work and working at night after i get off work and weekends, so stay tuned for more pics hopefully this afternoon.

Nice Marty!

How big are you going to build it ? It's really fun to build your own shop . When I lived in Vancouver ,Wa I built a 40' x 60' and it was still to small !

On the dimensions of the building it can get confusing if i do not explain what i am up too. So here goes nothing ;) the actual body of the building is 36x48 and will have 16' side walls, now i am going to put to that building dimension a 14' tip out or lean tube which in essence will be part the building, so the total size of shop would actually end up with a 50wX48d. So with the sidewalls being at 16' in the lean tube area i will have a loft above for more storage which will run the entire 48' of shop over the lean tube area. I will have 3 overhead doors and a man door all off the front gable of the building (no snow sliding off in front of doors) with one door being 12x14' and the two others being 8x12' plus you have a man door in the mix. I am aware of heating this building but it really fits what i am trying to get in the space i have now to utilize, hope this makes sense.

that was actually thought of, but fire dept was not keen of doing it at this time, and i was needing to get it down now.

I will get some pictures posted of the framing of the building, this is taking a while to get done but i am saving money by going this route and there is a lot of satisfaction working on this shop.

Marty, Greg is on a job in Florida right now and he said he's coming back to Spokane in November. I don't know how long he's going to be there, but maybe you can catch him. His frame should be there now and he hasn't even seen it. He's going with an LS engine and a 4L65E. I got him a really nice low-mileage 1996 Grand Sport suspension with a Dana 44 and 13" brakes with black calipers that have the "Corvette" logo on them.

On a shop note since i have next week off i will be putting my water line in to the shop and also putting conduit in for my electrical. I am going to have to wait a bit for power to the shop as i am going to have to do some updating to the house electrical before i can run power in to my shop and the work is more then i am able to handle on my own, one step forward though and i am good with that :D

I was able to make some of my goal's for the year :) am mentioned i know have water to the shop, although nothing plumbed in yet Toilet, Sink, Shower ETC... I do have the bathroom framed and late this year finally was able to get power out to the shop YEA!!! i should explain though not the entire shop is wired.

I elected to upgrade the power situation in the house first (100 year old house) so in doing that we went with a 400 amp at the meter and upgraded house to 200 amp and then split the other 200 to the shop, which sounds like i will never need that much from calculations but it is there anyway.

You would think something as simple as digging the line for conduit would be a simple task and all in a days work, well LOL not to be for this Cat, when i was using the trencher and at about the halfway point i hit something HMMMM odd for my area as it is pretty easy digging around here, so i get the shovel out and do some digging thinking just a rare rock no big deal. So as i continue to expose the object by the time i am done there is a 7' long piece of concrete hmmm OK no big deal i will dig to the bottom should only be around foot or 18"s at the most HA HA Nope turns out 3 Feet down, by now i am scratching my head like what the heck  and before i forget the concrete is slightly over a 12" thick.

So over to get the backhoe and get the object out the way and back to trenching SHAABANG LOL i hit another one, well repeat previous steps to remove. One thing the locates i called in for that was not found, although they are not looking for it anyway, sure wish they were though :D.

Anyway so not to put you all to sleep, i now have 200 amp service in the shop, one outlet outside, two outlets inside, one 8ft fluorescent strip light (temporary) so all in all i am happy it is more then what i had this time last year.

Happy New Year, to you all and wishing you all happiness and great health.

chevynut
01-01-2014, 10:20 AM
Congrats on the progress Marty! I think a 400A service is way overkill, but you'll never have to worry about it. :) When I built my house, I told the electrician to install a 200A service. Later, I found out he only installed 150A panel. I have installed another 100A panel in the basement off of it, a 125A panel in the shop, and just installed another 125A panel in the new shop. The amperages don't have to add up. I do notice that when we weld in the shop, the lights in the house flicker a little, but I don't think that has anything to do with the panel or wire sizing.

Sounds like you're off to a great year! Get that shop done and get started on your 56! Happy New Year!

56-210Sedan
01-01-2014, 12:02 PM
You are absolutely correct Laszlo, i did overkill it on the shop, i had received so much conflicting advice on my electrical that i went to the high side of the electrical, i will never use it all even if i was full bore building my car i would never use it. The house did need to be upgraded though as the last time it had electrical work was in 1972 when they moved up from glass fuses to the little panel box that used to be there, now we do not have light flicker in the house and i can continue to get rid of old wiring were it still exists in the place and that makes me sleep better :).
