Using a mini starter to fit under headers. It engages the flywheel with no issue about 90% of the time, but on occasion it doesn't and makes all kinds of noise. When you hit it a second time, it engages, no problem. You can see a few shinny spots on the engine side of the flywheel teeth, I'm assuming caused when the starter gear doesn't mess correctly.
Any thoughts on what to check or do? Don't want to ruin any flywheel teeth.
The starter is used from the prior engine. It did the same thing on that engine.
Thanks

Sounds like you have a bad starter gear, if it did the same thing on another engine. Get a new starter. ;)

No, in fact they quit shipping them with a water pump!!! I'm thinking new starter also, I don't think that Chinese junk has replaceable solenoids!!

Here's a link to my engine running after I timed it..

Go to the auto supply and get a starter shim kit. It's about $10. Read the instructions and shim the starter. It will probably cure your problem.

I'll give that a try.
Thanks Rick

I thought about recommending shimming it, because I know you have to do that sometimes. But I have never done it so I don't know what it actually accomplishes, other than moving the gear toward or away from the flywheel. Since it works 90% of the time, I wasn't sure that was the problem. If the starter is new, it makes sense. I've always just bolted a starter in and it's always worked.

Put shims between block and starter to achievehttp://www.trifivechevys.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2013&d=1372444683 this.

Fixed good as new. Installed a new starter. Chevynut called this one!! Thanks.
Did shim the new one to the specs they had. Took one 1/64" (.0156) shim.... ha ha, that about the thickness of a sheet of paper!!
