Stock width is 60". If you want deeper wheels, go narrower. Stock springs are 48" outside to outside.

Well, what is the goal for the new rear end? Trendy changes can be expensive.

They may be a bit hard to find, but Lincoln Versailles 9" rears are right at about 58.5" wide.

The highly overrated 9 inch was 60 inches wide in many OEM applications for example 66-69 Fairlane, Torino, Comet, Falcon. 67-70 Mustaqng, Couger.Too bad you are 1500 miles away I have one with a spindly Traction Lock out of a 69 Mach complete drum to drum. The narrowest factory offering was aprox. 57 inches wide in 65/66 Mustang and 57-59 Fairlane. I have not seen one but 66-76 Bronco are rumored to be in this area. The OEM offerings on Lockers, axles. housings and cases are crap in most applications. The guys running Nascar and other race applications use all beefed up aftermarket stuff.

It really matters what your after and how much the budget is. Going with the deeper wheel look and moving the stock springs gets expensive. If your just wanting something stronger than the factory and keeping with the Ford brand...the 8.8 is the way to go. You can get rear disc and posi out with 3:73 and do a few mods for a lot less money.

The 8.8 actually uses a locker that looks very similar to the one in the 8.5 Posi in my 74 Z28. I believe some of the bearing interchange with a 12 bolt. I can be had in both disk or drum configurations.
