That's an awesome 65 Malibu but my favorite year is '67. It does sound like a well-balanced car and I think you can obviously have too much horsepower because you just can't use it with typical street tires. Horsepower helps with top speed but unless you have huge tires (aka Pro-street) you just can't effectively use over 400-500 HP or so, imo. My neighbor's 1500 HP twin turbo '55 is a drag race car that he drives on the street. That sort of makes sense to me, if you're a racer.

Reminds me of my ls1 cutlass. Fun and balanced for street use. I personally would not carb a ls1 but folks do. You can apparently make more hp cheaper using a carb. Once you build them to need bigger injectors etc I understand the carb becomes much cheaper. You loose the effecinency etc of the efi but the racers don't care about that and some folks just like the old school look. The malibu is sweet. I looked at those wheels for my cutlass but to pricey for my blood.

I like the Malibu, would love to have one like it. Looked like even it had drag radials. Certainly you need them if you have 500 hp or more. Then you have to be REALLY careful about wet roads or even wet spots.

I agree about the carb. I wouldn't lose it. EFI is one thing that would make that car even better. I don't buy into the carb being cheaper especially on an LSx engine, because of the expense of the carb ignition. And bigger injectors don't cost all THAT much. Matter of fact, 8 new injectors alone are cheaper than buying one carb. Thing is there's a lot more to it than that.

I am more in to the 66 Chevelle, but this is a nice car, I would have to ditch the wheels.

Nelson claims a lot of power, but it really doesn't take anywhere what he claims to blow the tires off if they are real street tires. Or for what he claims, even drag radials. Also a lot of claims about him taking people's money for a build and either not delivering or the engine failing right away. Also yet to see a Nelson engine making some numbers on the drag strip that's commensurate with the power claimed. Obviously part of that requires a chassis that will deliver the power to the track.

So there's several ways for that to be "too much".

They better hope the cops don't see that video. Talk about evidence!

Exactly, I can make that much smoke with my 67 SS350 with 275/60/15 Goodyears and its built to real LT-1 specs right down to intake and Holley 4053. According to factory specs I am 350 to 370 on HP.

That car is a great example of what the pro-touring phenomenon is about - a performance envelope close to a modern pony car but with the looks of a classic. Like the owner said, anyone can go buy a new car, but not everyone can build an old car to perform like a new one.

A carbed LS doesn't make much sense to me, but to each his own. Neat car! Those /Drive vids are pretty well done.

The nelson 65 was stolen from inside a mechanics shop a few months after the owner got it finished. Not sure they ever found it. Probably burning rubber in Asia by now.
