I need to add a fuel door to my 87 GMC bed side [similar to a 55 chevys] anyone ever done this job, any suggestions. I got a surprise when I unboxed my new ones.

So, we are talking cutting a square hole for a door? There are several kits for this out there but I have no personal knowledge of their value or design. Me, I'm always closing them up and hiding the access elsewhere.

What kind of "kit" are you working with?

My plan is to cut a piece with door from the old bedside and weld it in to the new one.

The biggest thing here is going to be maintaining the contour of the panel. If you weld it in using the same techniques as are often shown for patch panels, you'll be good. You will want to planish the welds to remove shrinkage. The only other suggestion is that you should avoid square/sharp corners on your panel and cutout. Use a fairly large radius so that you walk the weld around the corner rather than having two welds meet at right angles.
