Many people have sent me private e-mail asking what web site is a good
place to list a car for sale.

Since I have never listed a car for sale on a web site, I can not give a
good answer to that question.
However if list members will send me the web sites they know about, where
you can list your car for sale, I will put all of the sites together and
send it out to all list members. Please indicate if the listing is free or
it costs to list a car for sale on the site. Use WEB SITES TO SELL CARS
as the subject of the e-mail.

I had over 50 requests for the ration stamps I have and I have only one set
of World War 2 ration stamps. I had a drawing of the requests for the
stamps and Roy Nagel was the winner. Roy your stamps are in the mail. I
wish I had 49 more sets of these stamps but I don't.

Bob, I realize this was before "my time" (I'm 33) but wasn't Don McLean's
song named "American Pie" after the plane that was carrying Buddy Holly,
The
Big Bopper, and Richie Valens?

PS - I really want to thank you for your hard work on this list and to
thank
Jerry Mull for telling me about it. I've been inspired to try a list for
my

Editor's note. Tom I think you are correct about "American Pie". Do you
know what the
Big Boppers hit song was?

Is there any good substitute for the rope gasket used for the rear main
seals for a 57' with a 283 and dual exhaust? Mine have started leaking
again after being replaced twice?

Thanks,

Howard
Monroe Township, NJ

Editor's note. Some vendors now have a rubber gasket to replace the rope.
You should check to see that your PVC/vent is open. Excess pressure in the
crankcase
can cause these seals to leak.

G"DAY BOB, & ALL YOUR READERS, NOW 2 DAYS SINCE I WROTE ABOUT RISING GAS
PRICES, WELL IT JUST WENT FROM 90 CENTS AUSSIE to 94 CENTS TODAY per
Litre WEDNESDAY. 15 MARCH.

WHY IS IT COSTING SO MUCH NOW. IF I RECALL DURING THE GULF WAR A BARREL OF
OIL WENT AS HIGH AS US $42 or $44 A BARREL A FAR CRY FROM US $ 32 TODAY,
BACK
THEN OUR DOLLAR WAS WORTH ABOUT 72 Cents American...BUT GAS SOLD for ABOUT
74 Cents AUSSIE PER LITRE ( one U.S, GALLON EQUALS ABOUT 3.7 LITRES)

I DOUBT THAT IT WOULD COST THAT MUCH MORE TO REFINE THEN TO NOW,

WHAT DID IT COST IN THE USA AT THE HIGHT OF THE GULF WAR FOR A GALLON OF
GAS?? CAN ANYONE REMEMBER.

I AM NOT A MATHEMATICAL GENIUS, BUT SEEMS LIKE US END USERS ARE ALL GETTING
SHAFTED BY OUR GOVERNMENTS & OIL CARTELS ONCE AGAIN, ALL IN THE NAME OF
INCREASED SHAREHOLDER PROFITS & HUNGRY TAX COLLECTORS.

ANY ONE CHECK ON ENGINE OIL PRICES YET ?

HEY WOULD IT NOT BE GREAT IF OUR GOVERNMENTS REFUSED TO TAKE THE EXTRA TAX
THEY ARE NOW COLLECTING ON HIGHER OIL PRICES... AND LEFT THE PRICE OF GAS
THE SAME, WE WOULD USE THE SAME & KEEP THE ARABS HAPPY AS THEY WOULD STILL
BE SELLING SAME QTY & WE WOULD BE HAPPY.

ANYONE BELIEVE IN THE TOOTH FAIRY ???

REGARDS TO ALL.. JOHN CAIN DOWNUNDER IN AUSTRALIA.

Bob- I am the fellow who had the 55 which was purchased by a gentleman on
your site. I also want to thank you for this service as it saved me a lot
of time. I was not going to advertise the car until spring but decided to
place it on your site only once to see what would happen. I was fortunate
to
sell it to a Chevy enthusiast who really knows his stuff. The transaction
(across the country) went well and the car left California on Saturday. I
also made a friend which, of course, is more important than the sale.
Thanks again for your hard work- Rick

To answer Robert Crean's question for anyone who doesn't know. The song
was called American Pie, because that was the name of the plane which
crashed killing Buddy, and a couple other notable 50's singers. (Names
left out so those of you who like trivia may remember them)

With regard to the "50's" trivia. If you can't remember the trivia, ask
yourself if you were in the same part of the country as the writer, if you
weren't interested in the same things back then, or if you are so old you
have forgotten the last several decades and really should be concerned
about the writers grading and age categories.

I don't usually think of San Jose California as being backward. But I
apparently saw too many black and white re-runs, and milkmen still
delivered (homogenized) milk in bottles with cardboard lids, when I was a
kid. My fathers '56 Buick seemed like an antique when started school in
1970. For those of you who don't remember, the song American Pie was a
seventies tune, and with Madonna's remake may also be a tune the new
century.

I really like reading the technical answers to the questions about our cars
posed by list members, so if you are one of those helpful contentious
members who answer the questions, please send the answers to this great
list so we may all learn.

Thanks,
Dave

My apologies to member Simon Radford in that I apparently offended him in
one of
my earlier comments re fuel prices. Certainly no offense to he or other
Australians was intended. I've never been to Australia personally, but
several
of my friends have - on both business and pleasure trips. While I don't
have a
saved copy of my original e-mail comments to compare, I believe I said
something
about "...less developed countries such as...". I know that there are vast
areas
of Australia in the interior which are not exactly over-crowded - and that
travel distances can therefore often be considerable. Our Australian
cousins
thus have to cope with fuel prices higher than those in the US - and travel
distances can often be greater as well! Certainly, I never meant to imply
that
Australians lacked civility or anything close to it!

In fact, I (an ex New Yorker, by the way) love to visit these "less
developed"
(and unspoiled in my view) areas of the country and the world - whenever I
have
the opportunity.

Great list. Your list members really know their cars and 50s music. Here
is a very hard question about
50s music. It was common in the 50s to have more than one person have the
same song out at the same time. Nick Todd and Danny and The Juniors both
had a recording of "At the Hop" out at the same time. Nick Todd was never
heard from again after that song.

VERY TRUE, BUT HOW ABOUT BEFORE THAT
SONG????? DID YOU FORGET ABOUT "PLAYTHING" ???? WHICH CAME OUT JUST
BEFORE AT THE HOP & WAS ALSO A BIGGER HIT FOR HIM?????? I ALSO BELIEVE HE

WAS PAT BOONE'S YOUNGER BROTHER!!!!

However Nick Todd's brother was one of
the most popular singers of the 50s and many of his records reached number
1 on the charts. What was Nick Todd's brother's name?

Editor's note. That must have been one musical family. Nick Todd's
brother had many rock and roll number 1 hits. His brother's father in law
had many number 1 hits and his niece had a number one hit called "You
light
up my life"

My two cents.....
First allow me to state that this is your list Bob - run it any way you
want. You do an excellent job.
I believe the list is digressing to themes other than 55,56,57
chevys-your original intent. Trivia dialogues, gas prices, etc in my
opinion need to be small in number. If the number of pertinent emails
is small, your work may be less. I guess I am a purist. I was not for
Bow Tie nor Classic Chevy combining with other years either. However, I
continue to subscribe to them and do enjoy the magazines. I see the
need to unify. thus voting with my wallet.
I am reminded of Classic chevy in the 80's when they tried to be all
things to all people. (rental property, other services).
I will continue to read your list either way as I look forward to it
each day. Keep up the good work. Peace/Thanks.

Editor's note. Like I say at the start of every list, all opinions are
welcome.

Hi Bob and list members,

I'm living in the SF Bay Area and am absolutely in love with the '55 Bel
Air HT. I'm looking to restore one for at least daily driving, if not
more. Am curious if anyone on the list has any suggestions on what to
look for when buying one, what to avoid, etc.

Thanks!
Chris

Editor's note. In my opinion, the number one thing you do NOT want is
rust. It is very expensive
to repair. It is usually cheaper to buy a restored car than do the
restoration yourself unless you can do a lot of the work yourself. I go to
a lot of swap meets in Southern California. If you will travel that
distance to buy a car, send me a private e-mail on exactly what your want.
If I find one, I will let your know about it.

Hi Bob & list members,

Donna, no you cannot use the stock 14" rims with the disc brakes. I
am running 14" ralley type rims. You may be correct about the Nestles' dog
name, but I
thought it was "Farfol" with an "L" at the end.
Here are a couple more.....What product was advertised by Bucky Beaver?
What product advertisement featured Choo Choo Charlie?

CDM, on gasohol. That is very interesting about the fuel cost to
produce gasohol. Is this product still available? There must be something
that could be
used as an additive or substitute. We have synthetic oils. Another point
made by our list
member in Australia is that the markets are advertising sales on motor oil,
yet gas prices
are going up at the speed of light.
OPEC says they increased the price of crude to compensate for loss
of profits due to our mild winter and lack of heating oil sales. Seems we
are doomed if
we do or don't cut back. Name another industry that would survive in the
market place
by raising prices to compensate for the lack of sales! DUH!!!!

Hi Bob! Your list is a wealth of information for all of us and I really
appreciate your efforts. I have found some great "hard to find" items on it

as well as selling my '57 hardtop to our friend "down under" John McCain. I

wanted some opinions from all of you that know much more than I do about
'57
Chevies.

I am restoring a convertible for a nice driver. The car came with an
awesome
rebuilt Corvette 327 engine w 4 spd. (Done right by the way) I have since
purchased a freshly rebuilt 283 w/ powerglide for installing in the
convertible.

The rebel in me says to install the 327 but the purist says the 283. Can
anyone share some thoughts on the better solution? Can stock accessories be

installed with the 327, etc?
I would appreciate anybodies advice! Thanks very much...........Leonard

Editor's note. I think everything that fits on the 283 will fit on the 327
with the possible exception of the oil filler pipe. My advice is do what
you enjoy.

Bob, your 20 Question Trivia was great. Only missed #2, was not familiar
with
that one. 19 for 20. Bring on Regis!!

As to your Nick Todd question, Nick Todd (Dot Records spelled backwards)
was
the brother of Mr. White Bucks, Pat Boone, who was married to Shirley, the
daughter of Country Music Hall of Famer Red "Peace In The Valley" Foley.

Pat's daughter, Debbie, had a huge hit with "You Light Up My Life," and
several of his other daughters pursued some type of music career. He has
four
daughters.

Pat went to David Lipscomb University in Nashville, later Columbia
University, New York. He started out like many of the other early rock
singers, covering 'black' records, often called 'race' records at the time.

"Tutti Fruiti," made popular by Little Richard Penniman, and "Ain't That A
Shame," made popular by Fats Domino, were two of his early records, but the

two sided hit, "Love Letters In the Sand," and "Bernadine," from the movie
of
the same name, cemented Pat as an idol.

What helped his popularity was the fact that he appealed to teens AND their

parents, in an era when some thought that rock and roll was the work of the

devil. Pat was, among other things, the spokesperson for "See The USA In
Your
Chevrolet," and, along with another Nashville native, Dinah Shore, made
numerous commercials during the period 56 and 57.

And now you know the rest of the story!

T-3
headlight (low beam doesn't work), 1 original master cylinder, 1 '55 solid

Bob;
In a recent listing a question was raised as to the "correct " color for
1957 Chevrolet rims.
I have a letter in my literature collection, dated April 17, 1957, To: All
Chevrolet Dealers
From: Zone Distribution Manager
"As a matter of expediency, all wheels installed on the Bel Air Series will
be painted Silver
so that it will permit you to switch white wall tires and black wall tires
without regard to matching
car colors. With the large Bel Air hub caps, only a small portion of the
wheel shows, which will
enhance the beauty of the Chrome disc wheel.
This change is effective immediately, and all Bel Air Models should have
the Silver color wheels
by April 25th.
I`ve had this letter for many years and remember sending it to Tom Trainor.
I believe that he
published it in the classic Chevy Magazine sometime ago.
I hope this helps in better understanding some of the history and reasoning
behind this matter.

Hi Bob,
I have seen hardtop to convertible conversions on several different
cars. If anyone is thinking about doing this, remember that the
convertible frame is much stiffer than the hardtop. To make the car
road worthy the frame of the hardtop MUST be reinforced to reduce the
flexing that will occur as a result of losing the stiffening effects of
the steel top. Also, the rear seat will have to be narrowed and the rear
interior modified to fit in the top mechanism. Of course, the car won't
be worth as much as a true convertible either and maybe less than the
hardtop was worth to begin with. You'll just look good cruisin' down the
road!
Just for Richard from my hometown of Baltimore. The Nestle's dog was
