Hi Bob,

I'm new to this list and am searching for answers. I have my dad's 55 Nomad
for a little while and want to put disk brakes on the front. Is there a
donor car I can take them off of, or do I have to spend the $800 and get a
kit from some company? Thanks

Dave
dads55@eudoramail.com

Editor's note. No 55 came with disk brakes. Since brakes are a safety
item, unless you really know what you are doing, please get the kit.
Taking parts from different cars and making a disk brake kit is dangerous.

Bob,

While we are on the subject of stock rims, I was informed by a
representative
of Danchuck last year at the Frog Follies meet here in Evansville that they

no longer stock standard, 15" rims for our vehicles.

Coker has this moon pie dealie they call the smoothy or some such nonesense

and when I expressed an interest in some last year someone along the list
quoted me a price of around $175. They were painted in the wrong color.

I can remember when you could probably get a set of rims like this for
about
$10 at a junkyard. Why isn't anybody making them anymore?

By the way, speaking of that, in the last CARS catalog I ordered they only
stock the standard 1955 210 four-door interior packages in the colors blue
and green. This is for both the seat covers as well as the door panels. My

interior was originally brown pattern cloth with tan vinyl on the outside,
with the outer frame covered in a dark brown.

One of my friends, Roger Hunter of Huntingburg (a veteran restorer and
parts
dealer) agrees that it seems odd that so many of the original color schemes

in the correct fabrics are no longer available anywhere on the planet.
They
have the correct fabric listed in the back of the catalog -- but apparently

refuse to even make these color schemes up for you. You can get the Del
Ray,
blue, green and that is it. I don't even know if you can get the
headliner
in the correct color?

When I suggested the idea of going into the business of doing this on the
side, he said that a friend of his was attempting to do it several years
ago
and was fined $20.000. He apparently neglected to pay Chevrolet, or General

Motors, a 6 per cent fee they charge for duplicating the original interior
color scheme for these seat covers.

Could anyone along this list either confirm or refute this? I also
understand that CARS recently bought out Ciadella so they are about the
only
dance there is in North America. I really object to there being only one
producer of these items as large as this market is -- I notice Classic
Chevy
International only books the CARS patterns -- go figure!

<<<CAUTION! When putting radial tires on stock rims, the rim could
crack
due to the added side wall stress of radial tires. DOES THIS EVEN REFER

TO THE ORIG. SIZE REPLACEMENT WIDE WHITE RADIALS???? Richard>>>

Richard,

Yes, for any radial, as the stock rims were not designed for the side
loading of a radial tire. But they can handle it if there is nothing wrong
with the stock rim for normal driving. I have "ORIG. SIZE REPLACEMENT WIDE
WHITE RADIALS" from Coker on my '55 Chevy and when I had them mounted I
just asked them to check out my rims to make sure they were okay to use. I
have driven them across the desert and on the Los Angeles freeways for a
couple of years now and have had no problems.

I have a 6 cyl. GM engine that needs some work. I do not want to store
this engine any longer. Therefore, it is free for the taking. The
engine is located in Seattle WA. It is too large to ship. There is no

and fuel pump look ok. I don't know the year or the Cu. In. If you are

You aren't the first person to have a problem with these guys.

Long ago I quite sending parts to them COD, their checks bounced more
than once. It got to the point that even if they prepaid, I would wait
until the check cleared before sending their order.

Some time back, I restored a power steering control valve for them. They
removed my valve from the packaging and replaced it with a used greasy
valve and sold it to a customer as a restored unit!! All my paperwork
was in the packaging and they thought this was our normal "resto" on
valves. The sorry slugs then refused to take it back and make it right
for their customer. I eventually restored a good valve for this
customer, but they were not happy with their experience, and I can
assure you neither was I!

Good luck getting your parts or your money back.

Hi,

I recently bought a '55 Bel Air 4-dr sedan. The car is in good shape, has
the 265/2bbl and powerglide tranny. I am planning to complete the
restoration (need door panels, carpet, headliner, windlace, 1 window -
driver's door, minor body work and back to the original paint). The engine

has about 17K on a rebuild, similar for the tranny.

I am thinking about doing a mild custom on the engine to get a bit more
power. Possibilities are headers with duals, and a new manifold and
carb. Any suggestions about what parts I should use? The engine still has

the generator, oil bath air cleaner, and optional oil filter up top. Is
this mild custom a bad move? Do I need to do anything else? I have an
exhaust leak between the passenger side manifold and the exhaust pipe, so
that is one reason I am considering the headers.

I'm new to the classics (well, at least I've been away from them for over
30 years), and would appreciate any words of wisdom from someone who has
already been there, done that.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Bob

I hope you can help me. Sometime ago I was at a car show and I met a man
whose name I think was Phil. He was telling a group of people that there
were mods you can make to a 6 cyl. motor in a 55 that will give it the
power of a V8. Have you or any of the list members heard of such a thing?

Dave,
I would start with a hgh efficiency 4 core "Desert Cooler" Radiator. It
has more cooling capacity than a heavy duty 4 core. That will help a
great deal. Also you can use a fan shroud and a 16-17" fan blade. A good
working water pump with a long neck to keep it as close to the radiator
as possible will also help. Our high efficiency is $289, and a fan
shroud is $65.Thats my suggestion. We have all above mentioned in stock,
and have sold many of these the cars with big blocks and a/c. Thank
you, Donna
