Hi Bob,

Several people have posted information about a modern filter replacement
for the original oil bath element on 55-56 4 barrel air cleaners.

I have finally tracked down the correct part number from K&N, it is
E3650. This is the reusable, cleanable filter system that K&N is
famous for.

The dimensions of the filter element are: 5" high, 9" OD and 7 1/2" ID.

Hope this helps. Keep up the great work with this List, Bob.

Hi Bob-
In response to CJ Wilson about checks with car designs, I have Dream
Machines checks from Checksinthemail.com
They are in the Hip and Cool series. (Of course we are) It's a 3 picture
series of tail fins: 57 Chev, 58 Buick, 59 Caddy. I've had them for
several
years. And there's a discount on your first order. (Not to promote them too
heavily, but I like em.)

Bob - Leroy Falk advises that a '62 axle center section will fit the
55-57, but has a bit of incorrect info as to axle shafts. In 1957,
Chevrolet changed the bearing size, thus 57 axles will not fit 55-56 and
vice versa. The length is the same. I believe 58-64 full size cars
have longer axles than 55-57, but have also been told they will fit. The
55-64 full size and 55-62 Corvette center sections all interchange, and
all the side gears (where the axleshafts connect) are splined the same.

Bob,

There is a question as to the accuracy of the part number of the K&N
reusable
filtering element that I have found fits the 56 4-barrel air cleaner.

The number, A090A6 , is embossed twice in the rubber base of the element,
so
there is no mistake.

The filter measures 5" high by 7 1/2 "inner diameter and 9" outer diameter.

If this element is no longer available, those interested will have to do as
I
did and take the air cleaner to the swap meet and start trying various
filters until something fits.

Bob, I am looking to replace my points and condenser in my distributor with
a
magnetic pickup. My engine is a 64 vintage 283. I know that Bow Ties
offers
a conversion kit. I have a bit of play in my distributor and am
considering
replacing the entire distributor with one already set up with a magnetic
pickup. Does anyone know what year distributor is equipped with a
magnetic
pickup that will be a direct replacement for the 64 distributor? Since I
want to retain the original look (and due to the lack of room next to the
firewall) I am not interested in the larger HEI distributors. Thanks for
any
help.

Hi Bob
I enjoy reading the info provided and all of the cars for sale. I am
writing this e-mail to hopefully find a 1957 Chevrolet Nomad for my wife
and
I to build. I am not interested in a finished car since it is extremely
unlikely that the color/drivetrain/modifications/etc. would be what we
want.
I am also not interested in completely original cars that need restoration.
I don't want to restore and would feel guilty in scattering the parts to
this type of car. Anything else (again 57 Nomad) that someone has for sale
I would be interested in hearing from. Drivetrain is unimportant and I
already have a donor frame. What is important is as complete and rustfree
a
body that I can find and afford. Also as complete interior and exterior
trim that is specific to 1957 Nomads.
Thank You, Sincerely, Joseph Rock

If you haven't been to your local Wal-mart / Target / K-mart / Toys R us,
you need to check out the latest in diecasts. Mattel has just released a
'58
Cameo truck in 1/64th scale in the Collector's Edition black box for $8,
and
the purple '57 hardtop car goes for $20 - 24 usually. There's been alot of
'57 chevy models being released lately, some in kit form ( Testors has a
yellow & white '55, and red and white '57 , metal bodies already
pre-colored
1/24th scale ), and there are some '57s from Johnny Lightning in the
Magazine
series in red and green 1/64th, and a purple one in a $2 JL 1/64th form,
different packaging. Really nice detailing too, for the price. And Racing
Champions has a NASCAR set of 5 cars for $5 at wal-mart, with 2 different
'57
convertible race cars, and 2 '57 hardtops...Jeff gordon and Dale, Sr
convertibles, and Dale Jr. and Sr Hardtops. Not all in the same
package...you
get two '57's at most, usually the convertibles together, and the hardtops
together. Usually priced at $3-4 each separate packaging previously, so
this
is a hell of a deal! Anyway, just thought I'd update the Classic Chevy
List
to some new diecasts for the toy-lovers out there.

Good morning Bob,

Could you please put my little request to your list of members. What i was
wondering was if anyone knows of any 55-57 Chevs that were either Police
cars or Fire Chief cars or Ambulances. If they could send me photo's of any
of these or email them through. We have a few guys including myself that
like to find and have a good long stair at these little beauties. What I
intend on doing on these photo's is placing a few of them our car Clubs
newsletter. Hopefully if there is enough room they will allow me to do a
story or history on the owner and the vehicle. Any correspondence would be
greatly appreciated.

Is anyone out there in the Bob Ford land happen to be going to the TULSA
TOWN MELT DOWN 2000. They are going to have a Chevrolet Hall of Memories.
This entails any Chevy memorabilia like dealers albums, sales brochures
etc,
which will all be on display. The show starts in JULY 2-5, but being stuck
in Australia, its a little hard to see what this event will turn out like.
Just hoping that someone could let me know what I missed.

Keep up the great job Bob,

Don,
I just called K & N about that '56 air filter number A090A6 and was
told that is a bad number. It is a mold number and they can't cross
reference it. They asked for the dimensions of the air filer so he can
find one from that information.
So, can you ask your friend who has a '56 and gave you that number to
measure the height, inside diameter and the outside diameter or thickness
for us? And if he has an old dirty one that he could part with I will be
glade to pay him for it and to have it shipped so I could get its
dimensions.

Kim,

As I mentioned in my note on Bob's list, I have a '57. This info was
passed
from a friend who has a "56, so I can't verify it for sure. However, I
called him when I got your message. He tells me that he got the number
directly from the filter in HIS car. That filter came from the Long Beach
(CA) Automotive Swap Meet. He spent quite awhile trying different filters
until he found this one. Now, it MAY be that the number is discontinued
and
that's why you can't find one. It's not impossible with anything related
to
old cars. But, from my experience, anything once manufactured can still be
found. I've gotten several 1957-made NOS pieces for my car. Never thought
they existed! A filter from a big company shouldn't be hard to come up
with. Why don't you call K&N? They're in Riverside, CA. The number is
800-858-3333. They also have a webpage at http://www.knfilters.com/. Good
luck!

In one of the past LIST you gave K&N A090A6 as the part number for

local auto parts stores and both said that number is not a K & N part
number, yet one of the list members indicated that he had bought one.
Please let me know if that is the correct part number and/or what parts
stores I could buy one from.
One of the parts stores I checked was Pepboys.

Kim,

I have a cast-iron Powerglide in my '57. I was directed to a little
"hole-in-the-wall" shop called Fareway Transmissions in Arleta (not the
greatest area, you know?). I was sent there by the guy who got me started
restoring my car several years ago. He specialized in Buicks, and this
shop
was the only place he could find that would even TOUCH a Dynaflow. Buick
used an enclosed driveline that pretty-much frightened the modern shops
away. Fareway is run by a gruff old guy named Harvey. Harvey worked on
Powerglides (and Dynaflows) when they were "the latest thing". They don't
scare him!

My car has been there and I don't hesitate to send anyone else there, even
if the place IS a dump! The address is 14021 Van Nuys Blvd. in Arleta, CA.
The phone is (818) 899-3317 or (818) 899-2030. By the way, depending on
what your transmission needs, the $250 you mentioned doesn't seem like
much.

Good luck with it.
