HI BOB:

I HAVE JUST INSTALLED RADIAL TIRES ON MY 56 CONVERTIBLE AND WANT TO KNOW
IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS RUN RADIAL TIRES WITH WIRE WHEEL COVERS? I WAS
TOLD BY A GOOD SOURCE THAT THE RADIAL TIRE FLEXES TOO MUCH AND THAT THEY
WILL COME OFF. 56 WIRE WHEEL COVERS HAVE 5 METAL CLIPS ATTACHED TO THE
RIM AND THEN CLIPPED TO THE WIRE WHEEL RIM AND BASKET. AT A COST OF
OVER A $1000 FOR THE WIRE WHEEL COVERS I AM RELUCTANT TO EXPERIMENT. IF
ONYONE HAS HAD ANY EXPERIENCE WITH WIRE WHEEL COVERS AND RADIAL TIRES, I
WOULD APPRECIATE HEARING FROM THEM.

If you are at all handy with a computer, you can design your own checks
using
your choice of (non-plagerized) photos. You can order the checks
pre-printed
with your bank information and in a format to fit your printer. Design the
look you want with a photography program such as Photoshop and print it
onto
your checks. Not that hard.

Hi Bob
I have an aftermarket 134a AC unit on my chevy and recently had to have the

system recharged. The AC fellow told me that I would need to run my car
every few days for 10-15 minutes to keep the system from leaking. Does
anyone out there know the validity to this?

Bob, you seem to have such a vast array of data available, so I am going to
ask a question, and hope you have the answer. How do I find out how many
cars like mine were built at the Oakland CA plant.

It is a 2dr Bel Air Sport coupe, 283 PP/Powerglide with PS Ezeye glass,
Dusk
Pearl W/Wonderbar radio? According to the serial number it was produced in
Nov 56.

Thanks for your reply,
Jack Wildermuth

Editor's note. Sorry Jack, I have never seen any list of cars by model
that is broken down by assembly plant. List members, can you help?
Anyone know if the Oakland plant still exist?

Do you or anyone else know how to find out who were the former owners of
your car? Where is was first sold? Or anything else about it's history. I
know the names of the two previous owners, but the earlier one does not
answer my letters. I have tried going through the DMV in four states, but
this has not told me anything I did not already know. Any help in this area
would be greatly appreciated.

Tony Esposito
e-mail me at maybelater@yahoo.com

Editor's note. I have had Zero luck trying to trace the previous owners
of my car and it has been in
California all of it's life. The California DMV told me there is a new
federal law that keeps them from releasing the address of former owners.
They will give you the name of the owner for any given year for some fee
that I think is $10. For my 57 I would have to fill out 43 requests at a
total cost of $430 and then all I would get is the name of the owner for
that year.

My girlfriend has been making curtains for our new house, and I've had
the privilege of pounding pavement with her to look at suitable reams of
material to her liking ( Nyuk! Nyuk! ). So, visiting a semi-local store
yesterday with her to acquire more material, I hit the Big Lots store, and
found several 1/24th '55 Chevy modified convertible cars ( collectors
edition, only 2,499 made). Then I wandered back over to the fabric store,
Hancock Fabrics, and while she was still shopping, I wandered to the
"eclectic" section of unusual fabrics. I found some neat Chevy material, on

sale. They have : Corvette cars cloth, many different year cars on it,
Corvette emblems cloth , Winston Cup cloth, Jeff Gordon and Terry Labonte
cloth, and finally ( pause for breath ) the Chevy / truck cloth. They have
two truck cloths, one style with 4 trucks and cars : a '57 green
Cameo/early
'50's woodie wagon/suburban?/'40's convertible/56 chevy hardtop, and one
with
3 different new Chevy trucks ( ie, "modern") . I bought four yards of the
Cameo cloth, figured I'd get my lady to make some small curtains for my
Palace ( ie, Garage ), which has two little windows in it. :) Another
fabric store, Joann's, had a Chevy car print with many, many old chevy cars

on it, including a '56 chevy hardtop and convertible, many different years,

cars about an inch long or less. I might have to buy some of this too,
don't
know how long they'll print them. The lady at the store said it depends on
how much is sold, and if the cloth manufacturer gets a commitment for
10,000
yards or more. So, if you want any of this stuff, you better get it now,
before it is history. The Cameo (and other car clothes) are 100% cotton
fabric, made by Concord Fabrics, Inc. , with blue sky background with puffy

white clouds. The Cameo is in front of a red barn, the '56 Hardtop in front

of a drive-in restaurant, the 40's convertible in front of a Western Mesa
desert mountaintop, and the Sub/woodie/wagon in front of evergreen
mountains.
It sells normally for 4.69/yd, it was 20% off at 3.75/yd.
Well, that's my Ole Truck / Old Chevy contribution for the day, hope you

guys storm the fabric stores to pick up some of this interesting material
before its all gone. :) Good luck!

Jerry Casper
get some now, before it's "curtains" for sure...LOL

Hi Bob,

I was wondering if anyone on The List can help me with a problem with the
horn ring on a 57 Chevy BelAir. According to all of the diagrams I've
seen,
I have all of the right parts in the right order, but the horn ring is
really loose - like there should be a spring under it to keep it stable. I
can't find a spring in any of the diagrams, except for a disk that is
raised
in the middle, but that's not enough lift to keep the ring from rattling.
I
was wondering if I'm missing something that I should have under the horn
ring that doesn't show up on any of the repro catalog diagrams. Also, if
anyone has the clutch head screws for the horn ring, I'd like to get them.

I'd really appreciate any help I can get on this.

One other thing. When I had a '61 Vette, I found a laminated wiring
diagram
that was about 18" by 24". It was really a help, since the books that have
diagrams are small and it's hard to follow the lines. I was wondering if
anyone had blown-up copies like that, since it was really easy to follow
when working on the wiring.

I imagine that all of the praise you get in almost every posting gets old
after a while, but you really do provide a great service to the members on
the list, and we look forward to getting every new copy of your List. Keep
up the great work.

In response to Dean Benson, who asks about the possibility of putting a
2-door
hardtop body on a frame which originally had a 4-door sedan body - I'd
offer the
following.

My recollection is that all frames are identical within each of the three
model
years, with the exception of the convertible (which, of course, has added
reinforcement). However, I'd strongly suggest that Dean dig out a copy of
the
shop manual for his particular model year and take a good look at the specs
prior to grabbing any tools. Also, I'd further suggest re-evaluating: is it
really better to pull body off frame, or is it portions of the running gear
from
that 4-door frame that you really want to transfer? A thorough - and
unbiased -
evaluation of the conditions of the two frames and the components involved
should give you the answer as to which is the best way to proceed.

Hi Jack!
Here are some numbers for you. GM made 166,426 57 B/A 2dr. Hardtops.
There were 75,668 cars produced at the Oakland , Ca plant in 1957 and
74,109 cars produced in the LA plant. Back east there were 205,323 57's
made in Tarrytown, NY. I guess that proves that us easterners work like
mad, and you guys are really laid back! With all of this trivial
knowledge I have I should try out for Jeopardy! Take Care, Donna

Donna. You should be on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". At a recent
party I was at, someone ask the person beside me if he "Wanted to be a
Millionaire". He said no, he would sure hate to give up 4 million to just
be a millioniare. I thought to myself, I must have come to the wrong
party.
