To Lenny: Summit Racing has Bowtie 3rd brake lights to put inside your
rear window. As far as the other lights go, they may be manufactured
again in the future by someone else. The 55 had a red lens that went in
place of the red white and blue emblem on the trunk lid. Good luck.

Bob,

Please add this to your list.

I inherited two Chevy 350, 325 HP complete marine engines. They were
given to me by a friend who no longer wanted them but thought I could use
these in my 57. Problem is that I live in a small apartment and I already
have a 350 in my chevy. I live in Northern VA (Woodbridge) and the
engines are about an hour away in Kent, MD. I actually thought these
would make a great father/son project.

E-Bay Alert! I had 2 offers on my Chevy last week on E-Bay. The highest,
$12,000. met the reserve, and at the last minute was pulled!!! The person
said a co-worker used their password and made the bid without her consent.
I sat there for 3 days thinking it was sold. The lower bid, $10,000, did
not meet the reserve, and when time came to inquire if he wanted the car, I
found out he was a dealer, and "if I would bring it to Huntington Beach
(about 75 miles from me) he would see if he would give me anything for it.
What a joke. BEWARE!!!

I am honest, and just assume others are too. Here I sit after forking out
over $100. for an ad and waiting 10 days with 2 offers thinking I had a
sale, and I still have the car!

I am trying to sell my ONE OWNER 56 Beauville 9 passenger wagon. (Wish I
didn't have to, but health problems force me to do it). I am having a
problem with "mileage". The car has about 200,000 miles on it, however the
engine (an 8? Camero) was rebuilt and has about 5,000 miles on it, the
powerglide was rebuilt as was the carburetor in '98 and they have 2,000
miles on them. The WWW tires are new. How do I list the mileage????? I
don't want to misrepresent anything to anyone. Thanks! All of you have been
so nice to me in the past with all my questions.

Bob:
Re: The fella who inquired about dash-mounted mirrors. My advice: DON'T
DO IT! Dash-mounted mirrors had to be one of Detroit's worst ideas ever
from a safety stand point. Imagine what would happen to your middle
passenger's face and head in even a minor front-end collision (or any
sudden stop), especially with no seat belts or only lap belts to hold
you in place. Those old sharp-edged metal car dashes of the '50s are
dangerous enough without mounting a glass and chrome obstacle on them.
I once had a '62 Corvette with a dash-mounted mirror and saw my
4-year-old son almost smash his face against it one day when I had to
brake suddenly. Needless to say, I got rid of that mirror the next day.
For better rear visibility, I suggest side mirrors with those little
round stick-on mirrors that give you a wider angle view.

Hi Bob and all fellow Tri-5ers,
It is amazing to me how many people in the car hobby have never heard
of Hemmings Motor News. Usually these people are fairly new to the
hobby, but some have been in it for a while. One contributor to this
list, Cliff's Classic Chevy, advertises in Hemmings. There are literally
thousands of cars, trucks, and motorcycles listed for sale every month.
There are also thousands of vendors selling parts for anything
automotive. The June issue has nearly 250 vendors and individuals
selling Tri-5 parts and accessories. I think that if you had a bare
frame for a Tri-5 you could build a complete car out of Hemmings.
www.hemmings.com will tell you where to buy a copy in your area. Also,
most large book stores carry Hemmings.

I also agree with the folks who say that Bow Tie and CCI are missing
the boat by not even mentioning this great format that you've spent so
much time on. Don't they realize that we're all in this together? I
recently attended the Bow Tie/ Late Great/ Yesteryears convention
outside Baltimore. One of the topics of discussion that I heard, was this
list. Everyone had nothing but praise for Bob and his forum. I think
that all members of CCI and Bow Tie should petition their organizations
to at least mention this list in their publications. I've been around
cars for over 50 years and I'm still learning a lot, especially from
this forum. Thanks once again, Bob. Wild Bill

for maybelater and the rear view mirror

There were two mirrors for the 57 that hang from the roof. One for the
hardtop and one for the sedan. The hardtop mirror's support hangs lower
(due to the lower rear window). If you look at someone else's mirror you
can measure and see if you got the right size. Before I fixed mine I had
to scrunch down to see out the rear. I don't have a day/nite combo but
sense that this support should solve your problem

for paul mears and his flame question

The spark plug goes within 2-3 inches from the exhaust tip BUT
after this you need to richen up the fuel to get flames. If you have an
adjustable
choke you can rich up the mix for the flame or you can push in the cluth
and pump the accelerator to get some excess gas into the exhaust. For
the show cars that have deep flames they run a small fuel line to the
exhaust and ignore the previous requirements

Hi Bob, GREAT LIST, keep up the good work!!!!!

Regarding Kirman's question about why CCI hasn't acknowledged you and your
list. I also "belong" to the club and get more and more frustrated with
each
new magazine that comes out. I feel that the reason for not recognizing you

is that there is NOTHING IN IT FOR THEM! This "club" has turned into a big

business and is only lining the pockets of the "OFFICERS'. The prices are
no
longer reasonable, when they ask for cores to rebuild, they give you
peanuts
for the part and you must pay the shipping to them, so that they can turn
around and resell it for high bucks.

Their latest addition of Camaro's to the "CLUB'" really got me. If I were
interested in Camaro's or 58 and up Chevies, then I would have joined their

respective clubs. I joined CCI because it was for 5-6-7- chevies only, and
I'm sure a lot of people on this list will agree, that years ago it was
great, but those days are gone.

Remember when a tech article would tell you which parts to get off of later

model cars to use as upgrades for the 5-6-7's ( such as what you needed to
gather to do your own 605 conversions). Now the tech articles tell you
which
part numbers to ask for when ordering them. They seem to forget that not
all
of us car nuts are not HIGH ROLLERS, and some of us actually enjoy scouting

the few remaining salvage yards and BUILDING OUR OWN CARS, INSTEAD OF
WRITING
OUT A FAT CHECK, and not having a clue as to what they are driving.
Can you see how this really strikes a nerve with me?

As I said earlier Bob, great job, the real 5-6-7- enthusiast's really
appreciate what you are doing!

This is in reply to 3 things noted on Bob Ford's bulletin board. They
involve a burping Powerglide, a panoramic rear view mirror, and a 3rd brake
light.

On the person who noticed transmission fluid on their garage floor after
taking a '57 Chevy out for a little jaunt, my guess is the leak is coming
from the dipstick tube. You need the anti-burp kit from CCI, as we did.
Call them and describe what happened and the likely need for the anti-burp
kit. Their number is 1-800-456-1957.

On the person writing in about trouble seeing through their rear window and
possibly wanting a dash-mounted mirror, I have another suggestion. Contact
J. C. Whitney and get one of their panoramic rear view mirrors, as we've
done for our '56, 4-door hardtop. Get the more expensive optical quality
glass one, 13 inches wide. You'll be amazed at what you can see. It's less
than $20, and clips over your stock mirror. For shows, you can just slide
it off and look stock. Phone is 1-312-431-6102. Internet is
www.jcwhitney.com.

For the 3rd brake light on a '56 Chevy we have the polished license plate
holder with bowtie red light. Danchuk has both this and a new pedestal one
(pages 9 and 16, respectively of catalog #20). Call them at
1-800-854-6911. Request a copy of their new catalog. It is really super!

California Car Cover Co. also has the polished license plate holder with
bowtie brake light and their price might be better. National number is
1-800-423-5525. CA Local is 1-818-998-2100.

I did the same as you Bob with WD-40 in a clock. Was as a drive-in
theater and before the show started, I pulled out the clock, sprayed it
with lot's of WD-40, shook it around, let it drain, put it back in and
it worked for years before dying one day while driving it. Just made a
strange sound and hasn't worked since although, now that I think of it,
I didn't try the WD-40 cure because it sounded terminal.

Hi Bob,

I have a four door HT 1957. My rear view mirror is mounted on the
ceiling
just like all of the other cars. But I believe that early 57 cars had it

mounted on the dash. This makes sense to me since my mirror does not
show
very much of the road behind me. The mirror I have is the day-night
type.
Here is my question:
...

Dear Anthony,

The 4 door hardtops require the station wagon mirror bracket which is a
little longer than the normal bracket. The reproduction brackets are
all the shorter ones. You'll need to get a used station wagon one.

Hope this helps,
Patrick Rodgers

I have a 57 2 door hardtop. all original, restored in 1990. Has 2500 miles
since restoration. I drive it very little and after each run the Powerglide
(completely rebuilt 1990) leaks oil on the shop floor. I refill...usually a
quart or two and things seam fine. Are the seals just dry...or does the
trans need rebuilt. It seams to operate great....unless it is low on oil.<

I am by no means an expert, but, I have a 57 and my Powerglide "burps" If
I let the car sit, I seem to have the same problem you describe. CCI sells
a valve that goes in the line to the transmission cooler that is supposed
to stop it. For me it did not. I have found that the car could sit for a
week and then all of a sudden one night the big puddle appears. I
understand that this is a back up of pressure in the torque converter and
that it backs out the fill port. In any even, I now make sure that I drive
it for a short time each week. The puddle has been reduced to about 1/4
cup. It is a lot easier to clean up. I keep a drip pan under it. Anyhow,
if there are any experts on burping out there I am sure that I could use
the information as well. I have not had the money to do a total rebuild so
for now I live with it. There was at one time a video sold on rebuilding
Powerglides. I have not been able to locate one though.

Bob

Thanks a lot for allowing me to be a member of your list. I also have
wondered why CCI has not
mentioned your list in their magazine. I check every issue and there is
zip about this list. My
guess is they know about your list but have the attitude, "What is in it
for me?".

Fellow list members, do you think there would be a list if Bob said "What
is in it for me?"?

The information I receive from this list is priceless. If anyone at CCI
is reading this, please
reconsider what is good for your members. I can not imagine any TriFive
owner with e-mail not
wanting to be on this list. I am going to send a copy of this message to
CCI at their e-mail
address INFO@CLASSICCHEVY.COM

I suggest other members send a message to CCI at the above address and
express your opinion on
this subject.
