Hello from Northern California Bob, I have a question for the Group. Has

anyone used the Powder Coating system from Eastwood? I was thinking
about
buying a kit, but I want some feedback on it first.<<<

Bruce, I have used the Eastwood system since last spring. I HIGHLY
recommend it. When I had my 56 apart I coated everything that would fit
in my old oven.

There were only a couple issues with it:

First, the part has to fit into the oven. (Don't use your household oven
because it gives off "slightly toxic" fumes when the powder cures. I
bought an old oven for $50 and made a 220volt extension cord that plugs
into my dryer outlet.)

Second, make sure to use the Nitrile gloves they sell while cleaning the
parts, keep using a clean rag, and use their spray cleaner "PRE". If you
don't take the time to remove all skin oil and dirt, then the powder may
have some blemishes.

It is not very hard to do a good job. After using it once or twice you
will see how well it works. I can send you photos of me coating many of
my parts. You will see what a great finish it gives. Anything that would
fit into my oven got coated. A-frames, bellhousing, intake, oil pan,
clutch linkage, coil springs, grease fittings, etc. I even rolled up my
brake lines to fit in the oven and coated them Translucent Red! They
look great!

The only thing I was disappointed with was the "Mirror Black" color. The
finish was beautiful and perfect .... until I dusted it off with a clean
soft rag. It put small scratches into the finish. I had to re-coat with
another type black. It was on the flat panels beside the radiator, so it
was very visible.

One last word... if you don't like the color, just re-coat with a
different color right over top of the other color. Those are Eastwood's
own words. I did it and it works fine.

Hope that helps. Contact me if you have any other questions or for
photos of my work with it.

Bob,
Please add this to our list. Can anyone out there who has bought a few
times from C&P or Bowtie honestly tell me that they have never experienced
a
problem with parts or service from these guys. I am a member of CCI (since
1979) and I remember the guys who now are at Bowtie being at CCI. I
experienced a problem in 1979 with front floor pans, and it was taken care
of very quickly. From the new parts book C&P sent me, their prices are
about the same, after all, most of them get them from the same vendor, just
in different packages. Checkout Danchuck and other brands. If you can
tell
me anyone who has not experienced a problem with Lexus or the other major
high dollar cars, i.e. BMW MECREDES, CADiLLAC, or do we bash them everytime
there is a problem? As someone has said, buy from whomever you want to do
so, BUT, remember that they are all making a profit, or they wouldn't be
able to open their doors. I also would like to complain about the door
handles(exterior) that I bought from DANCHUCK and they are bubbling thru
the
chrome after 1 yr. This is a good company, but they won't give me my money
back either. Nuff said.

Bob:

With regard to what's cheaper, restoration or buy restored, as I've told
the
folks before, we have just recently started restoration of a 55 hardtop.
My
husband and I sat down and figured up what we thought we might need to
complete the restoration, and to say the least, we need a lot. As we are
progressing, we are finding that some of the parts we can live without.
This has cut the cost down considerably. There was a lot of chrome that we
were going to replace just because it had a few pits. But, we decided that
if you were a few feet away, you couldn't even tell it, and we could keep
the parts original. We are going to do some checking to see if we can find
someone to do rechroming. This car has been setting for 35 years, and you
would be amazed at its condition. It wasn't even stored inside. The floor
and trunk are as solid as a rock. There is very minimal rust at the bottom
of the doors and at the quarters. This will be an easy fix. My husband
does paint and body work and does an excellent job. We've been taking
pictures from the day that we bought the car. We'll have these to look
back
on after the restoration is complete. I think that will mean a lot to us.
At least if we do the restoration, we know that things have been done
right.
We almost bought a restored car back in May for $20,000. The owner said
that it was 99% original. Now come on folks, how can you say a car is 99%
original when most restorations required reproduction parts. We managed to
contact a previous owner, and boy did she have a story to tell us. She
said
that she had bought the car and kept it for about 4 years and decided she
wanted something else. She paid $9,500 for it and wanted to have it
appraised before she put it up for sale. She had a professional appraiser
do the appraisal and she said he was all over the car and could hardly find
a place to get a magnet to stick. She said that it was full of filler.
She
was devastated to find out that her jewel turned out to be cut glass. She
ended up selling the car for $8,500. Needless to say, we backed out on the
deal. We almost made a $20,000 mistake. So as others have responded,
BUYER
BEWARE! Just thought I'd add my 2 cents in.

Bob and list members

Could someone give me advice on how long it takes to sell a TriFive. I am
being transferred to
Japan in early 2001 and I can not take it with me. Should I try to sell my
car now or wait and use it a few more months?

Also, is it worth it to get an appraisal. If so, how much do they cost?

Hi,I just brought home a 55 two door sedan to restore. It has a few spots of
rust in weird places, slightly above the rain gutter on the passenger side 6
inches back from the front for a length of 4 inches and each side of the
car from where the windshield wiper comes thru to the outer edge of the
windshield at the point where the vertical line of the windshield would
meet with the car,To save a lot of time shaping, filling, etc,I'd like to
know if anyone knows of a parts car in such bad shape that these areas
could be cut out of it so I can patch 'em in to my car,I'll take pictures
and send 'em so we are both on the same page,Thanks,Dave

or video on sheet metal repair . i have purchased floor panels and braces
,but i am afraid to install them wrong. i do know how to weld ,but as far
as removal of the old panel and proper installation of the new one i could
use some help. i know that there has got to be some great step by step how
to's out there . also .is it possible to take the body off my cars without
one of those $1500 jigs . i want to sandblast and powdercoat my frame but i
am worried the body will start separating.

P.S. I go to the pamona swap meet every 6 week. if you are a vender (pay $
40.00 hint hint) you can park you car inside sat. night. you will be able
to walk around and make deals sat night. if you decide to go Sunday get

Bob, I have been doing tri-five Chevys for more years than I wish to admit
to. I have given this a lot of thought over the years. I have come to the
decision that (For Me), building is the only way to go. Unless you have 30
to 40,000 to lay out. Every tri-five I have ever bought, I have started
tearing it apart within a few months. I liken it to buying a home, when I
buy a home, I rip the carpets and vinyl flooring out right away and start
fixing stuff. So with that in mind, I buy a home that needs these
things. Not many people have the same taste or level of acceptance with a
car someone built. I don't know how many times I have heard "that's good
enough". But, that's me.

Pomona is scheduled for August 27, October 15 and December 3rd.
They also have 2001 dates scheduled. Times are from 5 am to 2 PM. $7
admission plus parking. Parking is $5 or $7 for close up. I also heard
that dealers getting set up on Saturday will snag some good buys a day
early so some friends pay for a space so they can swing in early for the
specials.

Also many of the cars in the corral are not for sale. They just park
there so they can be close to the lot. Go figure!

I may be a heretic but the vendors don't sell at that great a deal. If
you need a used piece for an obscure car you might get lucky there, but
after going twice while vacationing in San Diego, this year I passed on
the trip.

Two things for our readers
1) How can you tell if a spring (already installed in the car) is a six
cylinder spring or a eight cylinder spring? Previous postings indicated
that the six cylinder engine weighed more so the spring would make a car
with a V8 rise up a bit.

2) Am considering replacing the floor carpet . Has anybody tried the
dyna shield mat or similar items. the local upholstery shop carries the
gray fabric covered with aluminum but wondering if adding Dyna Mat or
other items would lower appreciable more heat or road noise.

Hi Bob and all list members,
In the last two years I've been to three shows here in the Baltimore
area that featured what was supposed to be the American Graffiti Chevy.
In fact, last winter there was a big indoor show here that had not only
the car but Candi Clark, the actress who was nominated for an Academy
Award for her portrayal of the waitress in the movie. She said she
thought it was the original car. It's owned locally but I don't know
the owner's name or address. I'll try to find out and pass the
information along. Wild Bill

Bob,
I know that this question has been addressed already but I failed to
see
the answer. I have a '59 Corvette 283 in my '55 which has the old
"Blow-by"
pipe directly behind the distributor on the block. I plan to rebuild the
engine this winter and would like to know if there is any way to get rid of

this thing and vent the crankcase by some other means. I would also be
willing to trade this engine for a later model 327 or 350 if there are any
Corvette purists out there who would like to put their little '59 Vette
back
to original.

Editor's note. Grady, I had the same problem. I plugged the hole behind
the distributor and installed valve covers from a later model 283. They
had the pvc valve in the valve covers. It seems to work fine. You need to
install a vented oil filler cap. There are probably better ways to solve
this problem.

Hi Bob, Can't help reading about all the stirred up feeling about CCI. I
have only been in the 55,6,&7 scene for 5-6 years now but have dealt with
many of the classic parts/info suppliers. I do own the CCI tech books and
were of real value to me at the time.I guess my only real complaint was the
quality of there photos. Sometimes all you really need is a good picture to
view. But for the price I think they are worth the asking price.
Now that I have completed one car and have my two son's to do,a 55 & 57HT,
I am sure CCI will be seeing some more of my money. Since the start of my
55 I thought I would just be loyal to one company and but direct from them
time after time. My advice to anyone concerned is to get as many catalogs
as possible, and there are many, and shop around. Not only for price but
for the quality of your ordered items. If you are not certain about an item
that is what a forum like this one can be used for.
As for CCI going down hill in their business, it seems to me from the time
I had my 56HT in 1974 and now it is much easier to restore now than back
then. With this growing rate of business a company is bound to have some
growing pains. Personally I wish they would keep their catalogs more
classified to the 55-57's. But there are many companies to chose from now.

Hi Bob, I read your mail today and it looks as if there is some interest
for the Pomona swap meet. I am in So. Utah and my sons and I try to go a
few times a year. That is where I bought my 55 Bel Air 5 years ago. It was
a basket case with a great body and that's just what I was looking for. We
just finished it just in time for the Hot Rod Power Tour 2000. We went all
the way to FL. and back with no real problems and averaged 23 mpg with the

American Grafitti Cars: Where are they now!!

Some further investigation has shown this:

I have found two web sites with info on the American Grafitti cars;

1: http://hometown.aol.com//milnerthx/milnerscoupe.html It is a site
dedicated to the 32 Ford Coupe, but has a little fo info on the "Ruth 55"
2: http://kathyschrock.net/graffiti/index2.htm it is the "Unofficial
American Grafitti Page" this site has onfo on the cars also, with an
article about the "Ruth 55".

"Falfa '55", "Ruth 55", "Blacktop '55"

* The original car(s)(three of them) built for the movie "Two-lane
Blacktop", then re-used for American Grafitti.
* According to one article (most recent) only one remains, and one
"true copy" made, last real 55 owner, unknown. Copy owner; Rick Figari (of
San Francisco) who also owns the original "Milner Coupe" (Yellow 32 Ford).
* New Brunswick, Canada man claims to own last remaining car, and
claims to have Richard Ruth confirmation of it being original.

That's what I got so far!!

Thanks to everyone who wrote me!! Keep them comin' if you have more info!

I might try calling Steve Fitch, but from what I understand, it has been so
long since he owned one or it, he may not know where it is.

Again, thanks all!

Marc.
