Congratulations to Silvia Comos and Bill Teton for being the first to
answer the question about the car
sold by Sears. It was called the Allstate and it was almost the same as
the Henry J sold by Kaiser Frazer

I can't believe that I'll be first to reply to your question of 08/05/2000,
but
I know I'll be correct! Sears-Roebuck marketed a car called the Allstate in
the
early '50's. It was a slightly modified version of the Henry J, which was
produced by Kaiser -

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the excellent 55-57 Chevy list
In response to your question about the car Sears sold in the 50's.
I believe the name was an Allstate which was a Henry J manufactured by the
Kaiser-Frazer Corporation. I believe the Allstate price started at $
1395.00 for a two door sedan. this did not make the Kaiser-Frazer dealers
happy as the Henry J cost more and had less standard equipment.

Thanks again

Bob and "THE LIST"!!

As I get older (approaching 50) I look for new ways to keep my weight down
and get a little more healthy. I have been looking for something that will
combine classic cars and fitness and believe it or not... I found it!! I
bought a 1959 Chevy Apache Suburban Carryall with MANUAL STEERING, MANUAL
BRAKES and a CLUTCH!

My arms and legs are getting a real workout and since it doesn't have AC
and
it is the middle of summer here in Florida.... I am sweating off about 2
pounds a day. What an exercise plan!!!

Roger Francis

Editor's note. If your car will cause a weight loss, I should buy one.
Loosing weight is a pain.

Hi All,
I know, I know, this is a Tri-5 Forum. I thought I'd ask this
question here anyway since a lot of folks on here also own other cars.
What was the first year Chevrolet offered air conditiong on
convertibles? One guy says '61, another says '58. Anybody tell me which
is right? I'll need a little proof other than someone just saying '58 or
'61 or something else. Please e-mail me because the person that asked me
this question needs to know real soon. Thanks folks and thank you Bob!

Editor's note. Bill, the book "The Hot One" by Pat Chappel lists the
options for all
3 years. For the 55 it says Air Conditioning was available for all models
with a V8 except
the Convertible. When it lists the options for the 56 and 57 it does not
say anything about it
not being available on the convertible.

After attending many car shows and seeing the quality and prices of
finished
cars, the prices of cars needing restoration, and paying the bills while my

husband restores our cars, it is my opinion that fully restored cars are,
by
far, the better bargain. Partially restored cars can be a good buy.
Completely unrestored cars are consistently overpriced and the costs, not
to
mention the hundreds of hours of labor, involved in restoration, are never
recovered if the car is sold. All this considered, fully restored cars are
usually a bargain, especially if the job is well done.

Take a list at the auto body store message board. It works real well
and all can see the replies. Donations aren't out of the question to pay
for the software. Talk to Len on the specifics.

Hi, All You Tri-Fivers
Bob this is the best forum out there, thank you. This email is to update
my 56 2 dr. belair project. The car is finally on the road. I can't believe

all of the problems I had with name brand products that were supposed to be

made for my car. I had and still have problems with my Vintage Air "Sure
Fit
Kit" for the 56 chevy. I believe they meant "Sure Don't Fit". I had
multiple
problems with the no mod kit installation. Plus a switch that wasn't
working
properly from them , hard lines from the dryer that were bent wrong,
condenser coil brackets that wouldn't fit on to the radiator supports,
different crimp type fittings for the A/C hoses that they say are in my
kit.
A new World Product S/R torker head that had the last cylinder exhaust seat

relief cut too deep going into the water jacket. This causing a massive
leak
into the right header. This was found out when the engine was installed and

$25 a gallon Evans coolant being poured into the system. They sent a
replacement head but I was stuck with the cost of more high temp. paint,
new
gaskets and coolant that was lost to the floor. Not to mention labor
.Edelbrock Signature series polished cast aluminum valve covers, that had
so
much casting flash hanging inside that it took me an hour to clean up with
a
die grinder. March Performance Serpentine belt system with poorly
tightened
idler pulley cover screws, causing one screw to break because it was not
installed properly and others being loose. Mr..Gasket small block early
style oil pan that was a 1/4" too short to fit on the short block to meet
up
with the timing cover. Pete Jackson quiet gear drive and Edelbrock cast
aluminum timing cover that won't fit together. Borla exhaust 2 1/2" "Hot
Rod
Kit" advertised with assorted pieces receiving less than what was printed
in
Borla catalog. This taking too many weeks to get resolved. Well sorry to
take up so much space Bob but it was disheartening to buy these items only
to find poor quality of materials or workmanship. I spent a lot of money on

Products that I thought were good. I guess customers mean nothing to these
companies. This is my first and only project car. Companies just don't care

anymore.

Thanks

BOB,

I am interested in hearing about the product "POR 15." If anyone has used
it
and could tell me about how well, or not so well of a product it is, I
would
appreciate it.

Thanks,
Harry

Editor's note. Harry, I have used POR 15. I think it is a good product.
I would recommend getting
as much rust off as possible before you use it. I think I paid about $80
for a gallon of it.

1956 Chevy 9 passenger Beauville Bel Air--One Owner!!!

Thank you, Bob and everyone, I finally sold my dad's car. I got about 2/3
of what I hoped for.
My buyer came into town and wanted to see the car, and paid $7,000. for
it!!! I am so blessed and truly grateful. I bought my mom all new kitchen
appliances!!!! She is 75, and for the first time has an all matching
kitchen!

Thanks again for all the posting, keep up the good work. Good luck to all
you 55-56-57 Chevy owners, I can't believe I am no longer apart of the
group. Take good care of those babies, there are so many memories in them.
A special thanks to Terry Jett and Warren for their time, information and

I have a couple questions. Here it goes:
1) Are the 55 and 56 front bumper ends the same? I know the guards and
center are different
2) The repro original sway bar kit- was that originally offered on all
models or just taxis? I don't want to go with a replacement aftermarket.
3) In 1956, were there 2 different wheel rim sizes? I have a station
wagon
and would like the wider of the 2 if there were 2 . I figured the wagon
would have a more heavy duty suspension.

I also have big list of used 55-57 Chevy parts for sale. Email me for the
list!

Hey Bob! The car in question was the "Allstate", built by
Kaiser-Fraser and sold by Sears in 1952 and early '53. A
total of appx. 2300 were sold when Sears cancelled the
project. The Allstate was based on the Kaiser Henry J.,
built from 1950 (as a '51 model)-1954. Total Henry J production
was around 130,000. How about a '51 Henry J with an LT-1
and a 6-speed...now THAT would be different!!

Greg Call chas108@3rdm.net
Always enjoy the list!

Editor's note. To drive a Henry J with an LT1 you need a license to fly.
