'55 & '56 3 piece front bumper ends are the same.

The original front sway bar came on taxis/police cars. They were available

as an accessory for the general public.

There was not a wider wheel available for wagons in 55-56-57.

I installed the Pertronix kit in 1993 in my 1956 265 V-8. I used a '67
chevy distributor. My engine has hydraulic lifters so no worries on top
end oiling. Anyway, this kit has been the best!!! Engine fires every
time, no points to adjust and it has NEVER failed in 25k of driving. I
plan to stick it in a 350 I have when I replace that tired 265.

Also I listen to Leon "the Motorman" Kaplan on the radio every chance I
get on Sunday mornings. He mentioned he bought a 55 chevy to modify with
his son. We need to get his email address and add to this list. If you
never have listened, try to soon, this guy has more car savvy than most
mechanics I know and will answer honestly. I think he has a repair shop in
L.A. somewhere.

I believe the car was an "Allstate" which was

I did see the gentleman on the list looking for

WELL THIS IS CARL, AND I DEFINITELY WAS IN DRAG RACING FOR 18 YEARS, AND IT

IS A REWARDING EXPERIENCE. I STILL HAVE MY ORIG. RACE CAR WHICH IS A 51
MERCURY BUT HAS ALWAYS BEEN POWERED BY A CHEVY FUEL INJECTED ENGINE, 4
SPD. TRANS. 617 GEARS, LOW 14 AVE. IN THOSE DAYS. I OPENED ON THE
RACEWAY PARK IN INDIANAPOLIS, AND ALSO THE MUNCIE, IN. DRAG STRIP. IN
THOSE DAYS WE DID OUR OWN BACK YARD MECHANIC , AND WE HAD A FAIR CHANCE TO
WIN. SPENT ALL WEEK GETTING READY FOR THE NEXT WEEKEND, DESPITE WORKING
FULL TIME IN A FACTORY.
TOOK OVER 300 TROPHIES. STILL ALSO HAVE MY TOW CAR WHICH IS A 1957 CHEVY
NOMAD, FUEL INJECTED, 4 SPD. i WOULD NOT TRADE MY EXPERIENCE FOR NOTHING,
AND ALL THE ENJOYMENT I GOT FROM THIS. AT THE TIME THEY HAD FLAG MEN, NOT
THE STANDARD CHRISTMAS TREE STARTERS WHICH CAME LATER. WOULD LIKE TO
HEAR FROM OTHER OLD TIMERS AS i am 70 years old, and still running the old
Rochester fuel injectors and have always believed in them. Carl Thomas,

The Powerglide died on my 55. I went to the junk yard and they did not
have any Powerglides available. They told me I could use a 350 from
either a Chevy, Buick, Olds, Pontiac and it would bolt right on the motor.
Is that correct?

Ralph
Long Beach, California

Editor's note. I am not an expert on this subject but I think that is
correct. You may need a kit to mount the starter, a new flex plate and to
rear mount the tranny. You may also have to side mount the motor.
You might also have to change the length of the drive shaft. Most vendors
sell the kits to help make this swap. I hope some member with better
information will reply to this question.
Since you live in Long Beach California, you should go to the Long Beach
swap meet Sunday Aug 13th.
It is at Veterans Stadium. Take the 405 and exit north on Lakewood Blvd.
Go past the airport and follow the signs to the swap meet. If you go to
the swap meet, stop by Bow Tie Overdrives and talk to Steve. If anyone
would know the answer to your question, Steve would.

Hi Bob and all. Ol' Bob Willis sure got you guys! The
plastic '57 is indeed a Corvette. (hope I haven't stolen
your thunder, Bob). Why don't you tell us about your
trip to Fl., in a 'solid axle'.

The first Impala was a 1956 Chevy 'Dream car' shown
at the Motorama in that year. By the way, it was preceded
by the Biscayne in 1955. The first production cars were the
Bel Air, Impala Sport Coupe and Convertible in 1958. A sub-
series of the Bel Air you might say. The first Impala Series
came out in 1959 and the Delray Series was dropped.
By the way, I collect original GM issued , Chevy literature
and promotional items. If anyone is interested, I have all
kinds of this stuff for sale for 1955 up to approx. 1975.

I installed the 'Ignitor' in my ' 55 about 8-10 years ago and
have put somewhere around 15,000 miles (probably more) on the
car in that time. Not a problem; as far as I'm concerned, their
claims are for real. JimJ.

In reply to the following........

This is in response to Tom Prizzi's comments/complaints about his '56 Bel
Air project. Tom, I'm sorry that you have had problems with products that
were supposed to be designed for your car. I too am restoring a '56, ours
is a 210. I really do appreciate your comments on some of the problems
that you have been having. I am particularly interested in the problems
with
"Vintage Air". I would like to have our car air conditioned and am hoping
that there are some other options other than Vintage Air. Glad to hear
that your '56 is now on the road.

Check out "air tique" http://www.air-tique.com/ before you buy. Call them
and they will explain the difference, very interesting!

Ken Ogle wrote in about the differences between a Handyman wagon and a
Sedan Delivery. One big difference is the tailgate. The Handyman has a two
piece tailgate like a conventional wagon. The Sedan Delivery has a one
piece
lift up tailgate like many minivans use today. Also note that to the best
of
my knowledge, all the Handyman wagons had a fold down rear seat. The Sedan
Deliveries had plywood covering the floor from the rear hatch all the way
to
the front seat, no back seat. As for the rear glass, it is my understanding
that it is fairly simple to replace the glass with the steel panels or vice
versa. A friend of mine did this back in the sixties. He says that as he
remembers the steel panels were simply bolted in and sealed. I could
easily
imagine Chevy making up a batch of sedan deliveries with rear glass for a
fleet order. An older gentleman approached me at a cruise in one evening
and told me how he used to drive one of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Co.'s '55
Sedan Deliveries back in the fifties. He said that the rear ends on all of
them were pretty banged up after a few months because of the poor
visibility
when backing up.
On the Allstate/Henry Js, one of them had a trunk opening, the other
had none. I don't remember which one had what, but I think the Allstate was
sealed up.
In addition to the AMC Pacer, I think Edsel made a model with that
name.

Mel,
I installed an "Old Air Products" air conditioning kit in my 1955 4
door 6 cylinder Belair about 2 yrs ago. It cools very well and does not
drag down the engine when on.
I suggest you contact them and ask for the latest catalog. When I bought
my kit it was $200.00 cheaper then Vintage Air.

But (there's always a "but") the Sanden Compressor started making
noise after a few weeks use. I Video Taped the problem and sent the tape
to them. They suggested I try a few things to fix it,
but nothing worked. I finally had to pull it out and send it back. They
sent another one which is a little noisy, but not half as bad and I do not
want to pull it out unless it just stops working. It does work really well.
I suggest that whoever you buy from make sure that if you have to
dissemble the
system to get something replaced under warentee that they agree to pay to
have your system discharged and recharged (approx. $50.00).

This is their web site:

I see quite a few ads stating "1957 Chevy BelAir 210 hardtop". I also have
seen some actual Southern California dealers advertised on your e-mail site
representing BelAir sedans. When you go to their site there is no stainless
above side windows or on windshield pillar in the pictures.

Buyers beware that there is no such thing as a BelAir 210 car.
FYI,
Glenn
=============================================
There WERE however, a small # of "210" 2-dr HARDTOPS built in 57
(not sure about the other years) and also ( I think ) a few 210 4-dr
hardtops (sport sedans)....

A lot of "uninformed" sellers seem to think that EVERY chevy built from
55 to 57 is a Belair. I've also noted that a LOT of sellers can't tell the
difference between a "150" and a "210"....

To answer Richard about a national Chevy club, the Vintage Chevrolet Club
of
America is national and worldwide and welcomes all years and types of
Chevrolets. VCCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration

and preservation of Chevrolets from 1911 to 1975. That sounds like they do

not like modified cars but there are a lot of modified cars in the club.
National membership is $25 and includes a great magazine. Go to the

The Henry J may well have been voted "Fashion Car of the Year" for 1951 -
but
first "hatchback" car built in the US it was not.

Actually, no Henry J ever had an opening rear hatch that included the
backlight.
In fact, early Henry J models didn't even have a hinged trunk. You had to
get at
the spare tire from the inside after you folded the rear seatback. You are
close, though.

I believe what you are thinking of as the first US-built hatchback is
another
K-F vehicle, the Kaiser Vagabond. This car was a modified 4-door sedan that
was
introduced in '49. The Vagabond had a two piece hatch/tailgate in the rear.
The
rear window and upper part of the trunk hinged upward. The vertical part of
what
would normally be the trunk hinged downward like a tailgate. The left rear
door
was welded shut permanently and the spare tire was stowed near it on the
inside.
With the rear opened up, this vehicle was sort of a cross between a station
wagon and what we'd today call a hatchback. When the new '51 Kaiser models
were
introduced, the Vagabond became a variant of the 2-door sedan.

Bob,

I am in the middle of adding Vintage-Air to my 59 Chevy truck. I too
purchased on e of the sure-fit kits and I would have to agree with Tom
Prizzi... it isn't quite sure... I am not going to start a bash-Vintage-Air
battle. They have been very responsive to my problems and fixed them as
soon
as I notified them. I do have a few complaints however. Some parts were
missing from the kit.. I called and they sent them. The installation
instructions are a little off but a call to the tech line got me going
again. The hose kit for a V8 installation is not pre-made. You have to
measure and cut the rubber then take the hose to an AC place and have the
ends crimped using a $450 special tool. The six cylinder version has
completed hoses. You would think that the V8 version would be more
prevalent
and they would go the extra mile and pre-make then too... The ad says that
it uses the existing holes... sort-of true. It uses some of them but you
still have to drill or enlarge several others. One switch was installed
incorrectly and it caused the defroster to not work. I had to remove the
entire evaporator assembly (for the 3rd time...) and figure out what was
wrong, remove the switch and re-install it in the correct position. The
tech
line was no help here because I was doing this on Saturday morning and the
tech line is only staffed Monday thru Friday. (keep that in mind when you
start installing it). I have been working on it for 4 days now and have
not
completed it. I will send an update when I get it working. Again... not
trying to start a battle here...(we've had enough of them..) If you are not
comfortable doing this... call them and get ALL of your questions answered
before buying the kit and maybe consider taking it to a shop. Much of the
kit is exactly like advertised and of good quality and workmanship. I think
they could use a little more Quality Control and perhaps an on-call tech
for
weekend support.

Thanks,
Roger Francis

Re your question in the list of 08-10-2000: I have seen '55, '56 and '57
Chevy
sedan deliveries with glass windows in the side. Some were obviously added
after
the vehicles left the factory (small flat, rectangular windows in rubber
gaskets) while others appeared the same as the windows used in the 150
series
Handyman wagons. The reported build figure (of 92 sedan deliveries built
for '57
could be correct, but I don't have any documentation.

What I do know, is that such a vehicle was not the same as the 150
Handyman. The
true sedan deliveries all had a hinged door at the rear - not the two-piece
tailgate - while the Handyman wagons all had a folding second seat. The
sedan
deliveries had no seat to the rear of the driver and front seat passenger
positions.

As an aside, I'd note that one reason you may see a fair percentage of
sedan
deliveries (as well as panel trucks and vans) with these small flat glass
windows added over the years is that many Eastern States used to prohibit
commercial vehicles (in other words trucks, panel deliveries, buses, etc.)
from
their parkways - while the sedan delivery or panel with the small glass
windows
in the rear could be licensed as a suburban or station wagon. Thus, you
could
use the parkways.

I'd like to know for sure too, but my guess is that the original author
used the
term "Plastic '57" to mean a 1957 Corvette. They were sometimes referred to
-
somewhat derisively as plastic toys by the European sports car crowd back
in the
mid-1950's.

Hi Bob. Love this list! But I have a trivia question as long as the name
"Pacer" (AMC built) came up. Does anybody know what was very different in
the
design of this car other than ("Besides looking like a fish bowl") and one
of
the first American cars to have rack and pinion steering?
Clue: The people in the back seat appreciated it
Thanks for all the hard work Bob.

I bought my 1956 Chevrolet 210 3 years ago when it was
nothing to look at; now it's just about complete, baby
blue and white exterior; all interior completed,
rebuilt original engine; etc. It means more to me to
build it myself, not buy it already complete, hey
your not sure what you have if you buy it complete,
and well I enjoy restoring myself anyway.
