1972 was the year decreased horsepower ratings were introduced, due
mainly to a change in measuring criteria.
Prior to '72 hp was measured as "Gross" output of the engine alone.
Starting in '72 ratings were "more realistic , real world, net" which
included the losses from air cleaners, exhaust systems and accessories.
Hp continued to decrease as engines were detuned to meet Gov't emission
requirements (real reductions in hp)
In '77 they reached a low of only 180 hp.
It was not until the '78 model year when real net hp ratings started to
trend upward again and the rest is history...look at the hp ratings from
the '90s to the current model C-5s

I have a 57 Chevy 4 door Sport Sedan and have enjoyed this list for
quite a while, and I recently bought a 63 Pontiac Bonnevile
convertible. While I realize this list that Bob Ford does such a great
job on is mainly for tri-fivers, I thought someone who reads this list
may know of some good sources for parts and/or information on the
Pontiac. Any leads would be helpful. Please send them to:

Phillip Brown mentioned that there was an original 55 shop manual on
eBay. I had one years ago that slowly fell apart and I bought Dave
Graham's repros about 25 years ago. At any rate, I want to thank Phil
for the info - I bid 6 bucks and it sold for that!
Imagine, the seller only wants 10 bucks S&H.... I guarantee I am not
about to resell it for 16 bucks.
Thanks Phillip

Reply to Jody's question about the gas gauge, mine does the same thing, if
I tap it, it reads full. What I found out from the fantastic club members
we have in San Diego is, the instrument cluster panel sometimes does not
get grounded well to the body. If you install a small grounding strap from
the rear of the panel to a solid ground, like the fire wall, all your
instruments will function as they should.

Dennis, I've been a Tri-5 Trucker for many years and
would love to see more on these vehicles. I do love
'em all, but my only "cars" are Sedan Deliveries.

Bob, my Dad always said "Make sure your mind is
engaged before you put your mouth in gear," but I'll
try this anyway:

Were the two vehicles named after persons the Edsel
and the Henry J? Thanks again for the great list,

Reference selling buying you cars at an auction.

If you are getting your car at an auction here is a summary of possible
costs:

Action Buyer Seller
**Auction Fee $150-500
This is a fee to put your car up for auction. Each company does it
differently but typically you pay this fee regardless of whether it sells
or not! If you want it at a reserved price (won't sell for less than $X)
that costs more, and if you want it on a prime date/time that also costs
more. Our other commentator was right they'll want the title in their
hands to guarantee the cars they advertise for sell will be for sale at
the auction.
**Commission 3-8% 3-8%
Based on the final selling price the buyer pays an additional
percentage
to the auctioneer as does the buyer - hence the auctioneer will get from
3-15% of the car selling price!
**Sales tax 5-8%
Most municipalities welcome car auctions since they charge anybody
without a dealer's license and a transporter lined up a sales tax - ouch!
If you take it out of state, many states share data so YOUR local tax
authority may come knocking on the garage with a bill.
**Transportation $350-$2000
You can only keep the cars on site for a limited time and so
transporters charge a premium during the auctions, even if they are
taking another car right to the same community, assuming you don't drive
it.
**Insurance $100-300
Many existing car policies will not cover a new purchase so you
need to
have an agent ready to cover your purchase right away. Remember after
you write the check it is yours and the liability -risk starts at that
point
**License/registration $50-200
Many drivers won't have current plates so you'll need a trip permit
to
drive the car or a glib tongue when pulled over for expired plates!
At the Barrett Jackson auction two competitors bid up the price for a
blue convertible with fuel injection to $85,000. The way I counted, I
figure the winner had to write out checks for over $100,000 when it was
over - not counting prices for an advisor, appraiser and mechanic!

Of course each auction is run differently with different sets of
fine
print. As a buyer, plan on paying the purchase price plus 10-15% based
on your options. A seller will net probably 85-90% of the selling price
and remember some auctions boast of a 66% selling rate - meaning 1/3 of
the sellers take their wheels home! Many auctions will report selling
rates of up to 90% too!

Editor's note. Great info. Thanks for sending it in.

anyone might have regarding a solution, venting differently maybe? Thanks,

Hi, I have this problem with my '74 chevy p/u as well as my
Classics...from what I've read and enquired about, it has to do with the
design of the gas station nozzles, not our cars...the back pressure
required
to activate it is different than it used to be. I've "fumed" and fussed
every
time I fill my truck up, and the gas blows out past the nozzle, over my
hand,
down the side, etc. I have to listen carefully, the gas rises up the tube,
I
hear it get higher pitched, then if I don't quickly release the trigger,
it'll flow out all over. Even with those covers on the nozzle ends to
increase back-pressure, it'll still overflow, as the modern cars have
opening
covers built-in to increase back pressure, our old cars have the old
open-tube
designs. I've given up, just try to pump slower, and listen carefully. I
think the nozzle openings are smaller than they used to be, so they flow at
a
higher rate, as well. doesn't help the splashback at all! the old nozzles
wouldn't fit the unleaded gas openings, and theres no more unleaded,
so...all
the nozzles got smaller, so they pump more volume, meaning any turn or
obstruction they hit, tends to bounce back harder , etc. just have to live
with it, I guess.

Bob:

Although your "John Doe" tale about the fellow whose family had to suffer
through the emotional trauma and financial strife of his failure to more
carefully plan for his demise was a bit off-topic, I found it touching. I
am an estate planning attorney in Nevada and California, and avoiding just
this kind of trouble is a specialty of mine. This poor sap could have
avoided all the
heartache and bitterness his family (including those lesser known members!)
experienced after his death simply by creating a revocable living trust
that
clearly expressed his wishes. It seems, though, that while he thought he
knew enough to avoid trouble, he only knew enough to guarantee it for his
widow and other intended heirs. I did not mean for this commentary to be a
solicitation for business, but if anyone on the list has questions about
wills, living trusts or other estate planning devices, I would be happy to
donate some (off-list!) time to individuals in our group, and try to answer
them via private email.

Reno Rick
mailto:rickerwill@att.net

Editor's note. As Rick has noted, the educator in me can at times slip
through to this list.
I have taught retirement planning for many years and I can tell you story
after story of the bad
things that happen to people that did not do estate planning. They thought
attorney fees were too high so they did their own will. This is a MAJOR
mistake. They ended up paying 100 times more in taxes and probate costs
than an attorney would have charged.

I strongly urge anyone reading this to plan their estate NO MATTER WHAT
YOUR AGE.
Consult an estate planning professional so what you want to happen to your
estate will happen.
Wills are a public document. Living trusts are not, so if you want your
affairs to be private consider a living trust. If your whole estate is in
a living trust, there is no probate and the cost of a probate is avoided.
I am not an attorney so this is not legal advice. When you need legal
advice, please consult an attorney. It will be money well spent. Check
all the info I have given you with your attorney. The need for legal
advice is especially ture if you have former spouses and/or there are
his/her/our children.

One last tip. If you live in a community property state like California,
(I think there are about 14 states that have community property) ask your
estate planning professional about community property and stepped up basis.
You might save many thousand dollars in taxes in the future.

I will also be happy to answer any non legal questions about retirement
planning offline.

Bob. I think I must have not made myself clear and Marc M missunderstood
me . I have had 55 Chevy's for years and the last one was a # matching 55
Nomad . The reproduction 55-57s ( fiberglass ) are not real cars in my
books . I think resale of apiece of history ( a factory produced car ) is
greater , The fiberglass repo's are just 55 want-a-bees . Bob

Here is another fuel gauge question. The fuel gauge in my 57 reads quite
accurately around town. It runs out when it hits the empty line, and reads
at the full line after a fill up. However, while at this years Hot August
Nights in Reno it would never read full. With the tank fully filled or
overfilled the gauge would read between half and three quarters full. It
changed each time I filled it up. Once I drove the car home, the gauge was
back to reading normally. The only thing I can think of is that it has to
do with the altitude. My home being only slightly above sea level, and
Reno
being several thousand feet higher. Does anyone have any explanations or
suggestions.

Thanks,
Dave

This is to Mr. Willis:
In response to this comment:

I don't think kind of comment is necessary, We have owned many old "steel"

on, believe me they are real cars not plastic toys.
