Hi Bob, and all. As a follow up to Louis'
comments on Net vs Gross horsepower, yes
the net is more representative of todays actual
output. At a Camaro meet back in July, it was
great fun to watch the guys put their cars on a
portable dyno. There wasn't a shortage of brave
fellows, willing to see their pride and joy being
run up to 6500 rpm's for what seemed to be a
good length of time (to get a good reading I'm told).
Point is, not one that I saw got up to the stated
horsepower, not even the newer 'SS's. I guess the
bottom line here is that apparently the net is taken
from the back of the motor, less the rest of the drive
train. Thus, this is perhaps a good indicator for comparative
purposes only and one shouldn't forget other factors
such as vehicle weight. I know from my own vehicles that
my Camaro rated at 275 (net) is a lot quicker than my
full size car rated at 300 (net). Still, this gives us motorheads
a lot of fun. I hope others with a better background in this
stuff will comment further on this topic. JimJ.

Bob,
I agree with you on the car price thing. I look at a lot of ads, and
anytime
there is no price listed, it's because the price is steep. I think they
want
you to call so they can convince you that it is worth that much.(LOL) And
some guys think they have the last 57 Chevy(or whatever car they are
selling)
left on the planet. I'm sure we've all talked to one of these guys at
sometime.(LOL)

I may have missed it, but I haven't yet seen what I believe to be the best
response to the trivia question asking for the names of "...two people who
had
two cars named after them".

I'd say that the best answer is Ransom E. OLds (Oldsmobile and Reo) and
Henry J.
Kaiser (Kaiser and Henry J). While most would recognize Reo as the Lansing,
Michigan-based manufacturer of trucks, they did also build passenger cars
through 1936.

Editor's note. This is the correct answer.

This is a Reply to Robert Crean. Chevy cast numbers never have letters in
them. The 6, is greatly exaggerated and looks similar to a G. I looked up
your # 3976624 and found nothing, however; I did find another possible
match
#3970024 is a 1969 to 1973 307 cubic inch block. The 307 was not known to
be
a good horsepower producing Bore to Stroke ratio but is still a small block

to those of us that love them.
Good luck Rob! Keep the faith! 5,6, and 7's and small blocks rule!!

Phillip Brown mentioned that there was an original 55 shop manual on
eBay. I had one years ago that slowly fell apart and I bought Dave
Graham's repros about 25 years ago. At any rate, I want to thank Phil
for the info - I bid 6 bucks and it sold for that!
Imagine, the seller only wants 10 bucks S&H.... I guarantee I am not
about to resell it for 16 bucks.
Thanks Phillip >>

Phillip, He definitely got you on the postage!!!!! It wouldn't cost over
3.00 bucks to send that book, as book rate is quite cheap! & 50.00 of
insurance is .85 !!!!!!! Richard

Hi Bob & Everyone,

<< From: INTERNET:fity7nomad@sprintmail.com,

Hi Bob and list members,

On a recent list I see I am not the only one with fuel leaks when
the tank is full. I too would like to hear comments on this problem.

Comments please!!!
Rich, Balt. MD >>

Rich, The best way to stop the gas tank from leaking in is to start out
with
a new gasket & screws. Apply a layer of Indian head shellac on the gasket &

the threads of the screws. When tightening the screws on the do not over
tighten the screws of the sender so not to mash the gasket. Indian Head
Gasket Shellac is the only Sealant I have found that will not break down
from
the constant contact to Gasoline.
I used it on my 56 Chevy when I replaced my gas tank 3 years ago & it
hasn't
leaked yet. You can also apply some on the O-ring that goes on the filler
tube as well.

Hi Again Bob 'n' All,
At the risk of being "overexposed" on this forum, I'd like to add my
two cents worth to what Bob and Reno Rick said about estate planning,
taxes, etc. Find someone in your area who knows the ins and outs of this
subject. Ask for references, if necessary, but find one. My
father-in-law died over 10 years ago and thought he had everything
pretty well thought out. WRONG! There were a multitude of taxes to be
paid, property appraisers from the IRS, and a ton of questions about
everything else. My sister-in-law, who inherited her father's house,
ended up paying over $50,000 in taxes because the will and everything
connected to the estate wasn't drawn up the way a financial advisor
would have done it. Not only my sister-in-law, but my wife and their two
brothers all went through the same thing. Get it done now! Don't leave
it up to the government to straighten out your estate. If you do, nobody
that you care about will get what you think they should be getting. How
would you like your child to find out that they have to pay taxes on
that beautiful '57 BelAir 2 door hardtop you bequeathed to them, at the
government's whim as to the car's worth? Wild Bill

Editor's note. Or have to sell the BelAir to pay the taxes that an IRS
appraisal said it was worth?
Please get good legal and tax advice. Your children will thank you for
doing so.

Re: No price on listed car

Usually true but not always. I bought my '55 210 from a local man and
the advertisement had no price in the ad. I ended up with a
"fixer-upper" (#4), for $2500. The car was straight and ran, (350/350,
Olds rear). It did need a good bit of work, which I could see, but I've
driven it over 10,000 miles in the last 4 years and wouldn't hesitate to
take it across country. I've found it's always best to ask and then
decide if the car is over-priced. Wild Bill

Hello Bob Ford,
My name is Wayne Eaton and I recently listed a '57 Nomad with you. I am not
a guy who has a lot of time to spare so I really don't read the e-mails you
send and I don't see my car listed when I do. So my thought was to ask if
you intend to make a business out of your list and if so, might you
consider
the possibility of adding things to the email list. (by the way do you have
a site?)

The absolute BEST thing you could do would be feature a "search vehicle"
utility. So I could pop in my telephone number for example and instantly be
sent to the spot on the list that will show my ad on the page.

Or simply type a Model or Make/year and view those types as well.

I'm sure you've given this and other things a bit of consideration. I might
be inclined to help a guy accomplish this or someday possibly create a
venture like this myself. But you're welcome to the idea for the time
being.
Thanks for any feed back, thoughts or suggestions.

Let me hear from you,
Wayne Eaton

p.s. Where are you?

Editor's note. Great idea to start a business listing cars for sale. Give
it a try. That is too
much work for me.

In response to Ian Buckingham's question about padded dashes. Back in
1982,
I decided to add a padded dash to my '56 Nomad. I found a good used dash
and
took it to Harold Drake's shop in Torrance. They added an additional layer

of material in the correct color and with correct stitching. Add end caps
and bar above radio and it has been on the car ever since. And it still
looks good.

Hello Bob and Friends,
First a suggestion to Bob is there anyway you can number these list.
Sometimes it seems like I miss one once in a while. I emailed a question
once and got plenty of feedback but I never saw my question on any list.

I also have been splashed with gas while filling up my 57. Currently I am
taking the car apart to restore it. One ideal I have to try to fix the
problem is this. All the new cars have that small opening and you have to
fit the gas nozzle into it before you pump the gas, I plan to try to fit
one at the top of my filler tube. Has anyone tried this?

Editor's note. Sorry but because of the way I make this list, I can not
number them.

As far as I'm concerned, ANYONE who places an ad to sell a car and does not
state the price OBVIOUSLY does not want to sell the car and I ignore it. I
see
many such in the BF list and I hope these guys will get the word and start
supplying ALL the required info that is asked for by Bob at the top of
every
list. CITY, STATE, PHONE# or EMAIL. It's so simple to do. This is a pet
peave

price
on the car. Burns me up.

Rob wrote>>>>>as a follow up to my question regarding the 024 casting
number on the front
of my block, i cleaned the rear of the block and found the numbers that
appear to be 397GG24 the GG is backwards if that means anything or maybe
it is not that at all<<<<<<<<<

The GG is probably 00, then the casting # 3970024 equates to a 307 cid from
69-73 Passenger, Chevelle, Camaro, Nova, or Truck engine. You can check
the
date code cast on the right rear flange of the engine to find out what year
it was cast.

Editor's note. I know of a case where a Pickup has a very tiny hole in the
gas tank that caused a bad smell in the cab. The hole was so small it
would not leak gas when the tank was turned upside down. If you can smell
gas, it means there are gas fumes in the area. This can be very dangerous.

Have a pro check it out.

In regards to gas coming back out of the filler tube, that problem is
not limited to wagons. In 1958, gas stations were full service and you
didn't have to pump your own gas and pumps didn't have auto
shut-offs. My steady girlfriend's father owned two funeral homes and
had their own garage, with a gas pump. One time I filled up there,
with permission, of course, and as the tank neared full, gas spewed out
of the filler all over me and the floor. I've been very cautious every
since then when filling my Chevy and when I think it's nearing full, I
ease off on the flow of gas to prevent a recurrence. It's happened a
few times in the last 42 years even with caution.

Editor's note. Is a funeral home a place you would not want to be caught
dead in?
