Lojak additional data -

Lojak powers up the transmitter when you report the car stolen to the
police and the police enter the car into the nationwide computer system -
NCIC. But you need your license plate or VIN to enter the car as stolen.
Some police do NOT enter the car into the nationwide computer system
immediately so make sure that they do for you!

Lojak works in the larger metropolitan areas and while the transmitter
still sends out a beep in the "sticks" there is no receiver to help home
in on the signal.

If the police car/s that have the signal are not on the road there is no
receiver to accept the signal.

Pros know how to block the signal or can usually find and disable the
Lojak in a few minutes.

Lojak works best for joyriders and as several before have pointed out, if
they want your car they'll find a way to get it! My guess is that the
car is still in the country and an unscrupulous repair shop is using the
body panels/engine/tranny.

While we all "hear" about shipments out of the country, few are actually
documented. My guess that a few cars we see at the strips and shows
might be stolen - after all most drag cars don't display the VIN or have
a license plate

Hello all 5-6-7 fans.
Just wanted to drop a note about my experience with Lojack. While living in

the Boston area in the early 90's (high theft area) I had Lojack installed
in
my Chevy conversion van. I was working at a dealership and had the
privilege
of "wholesale price." I watched as the tech installed the unit, it's size
at
that time was smaller than the radio in the vehicle with an antenna that
went
inside and up the windshield pillar post. Power was from the vehicle and it

has a built in battery back-up that must be serviced every 2 years. Most
insurance companies will give a maximum discount of about 15% off the
comprehensive (or theft) portion of the policy. My move to SE FL made the
unit still usable, as Lojack is also marketed in this area. It is automatic

as soon as your VIN is entered in the NCIC as a stolen vehicle, but can
only
be received by a PD vehicle that has the tracking device that Lojack has
made
available to them only, so I doubt that the thief's have access to them,
unless it is the PD that is ripping us off of our cars. Check with Lojack
to
see if they are avail in your area.

Hi Bob et al--

I've got a '55 BelAir 2DHT. I'm in the process of restoration and I need
to
know if anyone has a source, or knows of an individual, that restores the
door flippers and/or upper stainless for 2DHT. The trick is how to restore

the felt lining because it is crimped on. Mine are pretty beat up. Not
knowing what they look like when they actually function doesn't help the
restoration either. There are several places that sell the springs, but
that's not the whole problem.

Anyone with information? Can these assemblies be purchased as repros or
NOS?

Regarding the comments from Louis about wiring to prevent auto theft.

From: Louis, INTERNET:lou1@primenet.com

"if you are going to a move or dinner you may want to disconnect one of the
wires from the distributor. leave the 'boot' of the wire resting on the
distributor cap so it looks like it's connected.
or, get a 'dummy' wire and replace the real one. use a real one and cut
it in half and tape both halves so there is no conductivity. then tape the
whole thing together. tape the entire wire so it looks like the original.
when you leave the car someplace just replace the real cable on your
distributor with the 'dummy' one. the one i mean is the shortest one that
goes from the distr. to the coil."

These seem sloppy so I'll share some of what I do on my vehicles.
Simply add a wire with a switch between the coil(12 volt terminal that
connects to the distributor) and the body of the car(ground). This is a
simple ignition cutoff switch. If the switch is on, the car won't start or
run. You can locate the switch anywhere, as convenient, or obscure as you
would like. This is detailed in the CCI techbooks. Obviously, thieves
know
how the electrical system work, so they can work around it. But a lot of
them don't want to go under the hood and attract attention when stealing
your car. They generally just break or bypass your ignition switch. If
the
car won't start, or run they may move on. This is less obvious than a
battery disconnect, because the starter will turn, but the engine won't
start.

On my '57 I have an electric fuel pump with a switch, that requires I turn
it on. There was a lot of good information a couple of lists ago about how
to safely use an electric fuel pump. If a thief doesn't find correctly
switch it on, the car will die before it gets to the end of my street.

Anything you do to make it more work for them to steal your car, the more
likely they will move on to someone else's car. If they really want your
car they can steal it.

Thanks,
Dave

Put me on your list if you would, please. I own a 56 Belair 4 door wagon
that
is in need of parts and helpful hints in it's restoration. My next project
is
repairing the front end. I would like to put disc brakes on the front at
the
same time I replace the bushings, tie rods, etc. Any suggestions from those

who have already been down that road would be appreciated. Also looking for

the driver's side rear quarter window and the third "removable" seat.
Mine's
a nine passenger. Thanks, Larry

in response to the letter from louis about the device that goes on the
brake pedal

this is only good on new cars that you have to push the brakes down to put
your car in gear

as for older cars, if the thief wants to steal your car he can use the
emergency brake for temporary stopping until he gets to a place where he
can remove it

this device is no good for us tri five guys

Check this site out people. No it is not mine, but it easily could be as I
am basically doing the exact same thing to my '57 Belair right now
including
the ZZ4 and 700R4. This is a pretty nifty '57.

I don't actually own a 56 Chevy, but I'm looking for a one barrel
Rochester carb that fit a 55 or 56 with a 6 cyl engine. Possibly a model
BV. That particular model is supposed to be a good replacement carb for old
Land Rovers (which I do own). Any assistance you could provide would be
greatly appreciated. Thank You, Mark Wright

Bob,
In relation to stolen auto's, the US Customs do make spot checks on
containers being shipped out of the country to check for stolen cars, and I
guess other things. It is a requirement of US Customs that they view
original legal titles for autos being shipped out of the US. I know car
thieves probably wouldn't bother but the Customs can and do make random
inspections looking for stolen goods.

Hi Bob and all. I figured that I'd said my piece
regarding car shows, but 'Steve, Uplands, Ca.'
contribution in the last list prompts me to say more.
I'll start by saying, once again, that I see the need for
a fee for car shows for the reasons I've already gone into,
but I see no death to the cruise nights around here. In
fact, just the opposite. There is one every night within
easy driving distance. The 'hot' one draws 400+ cars
every week (more if space would permit). It has the
usual 50/50, free door prizes, music etc. It is run in
the parking lot of a large mall by the Lions Club. What
a great way to spend an evening and support a good
cause as well, if you choose. JimJ.

Bob - Your list members might be interested in the latest WIX Filters
promotional scale model car - a 1955 Chev Red & White 2 door hardtop in
red & beige. They have been available for about 2 weeks, and are a
limited edition so they tend to go quickly. Any FLAPS (Friendly Local
Auto Parts Distributor) who handles the WIX line should have it
available, or be able to get it for you. I picked mine up yesterday for
$15.95 plus tax. One was on eBay (auction # 454669611) and sold for
$26.00 plus $5.00 S&H. Its picture was on the eBay site referenced so
