Hi there folks.

I looking for an inexpensive way to redo the interior of our 55 210 4 door
wagon. It needs headliners, door panels, seat covers, repainted dash and
trim, carpet, weather seals, etc..... I can do some of the prep work
myself. We are trying to create a nice driver.

Any information about shops in the So Cal area would be great

A number of people have suggested TJ, but with no details.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge, this is my first day into the project.

Oxford. Mich.

Also does anyone recall an article in Car Craft sometime in the summer of
'98'?
It was about a steering box that was similar to a 605 but came in an
International Scout. The article also mentioned using a vacuum booster and
master cylinder
from a V-8 monza as a low cost alternative to after market power brakes. I
thought I had
a copy of the article, (I believe it was in the readers pages) but cant
seem to find it. If anyone has a copy I sure would like one.

Bob, first of all, thanks for your trouble and time spent on your site. I
look forward to receiving your emails.
I have a 55 post BelAir with 15,000 miles that I am making into a nice
street
rod. I bought a 12 bolt out of a 69 z28 and want to know if you or any
readers out there know if my driveline angle will be correct with the
existing perches? Center to center is exactly 64" on both so it should bolt

right in. If you recall what the perches look like on a 12 bolt, you will
know why I'm hesitant to cut them off. Also I might be interested in
selling
the drive train from this car as I will never put it back the way it was.
This is a factory original unrestored car. My Email is chevyba55@aol.com

Thanks in advance, Rod....

Although the following would work to heat the engine I DO NOT recommend
that anyone use it. It is in violation of the Nat. Elect. Code and is
very dangerous.

1. Connect one end of the 1006 foot (insulated) wire to the hot side of
an outlet in the house, with the power off
2. Connect the other end to one prong of the heater plug
3. Either use a buried metal water pipe or a driven ground rod to
connect to the other prong of the heater plug, the 3rd prong (the round
or U shaped one) is not needed for conductivity
4. Turn the power on

I have a 57 2 door post sedan in storage. It is an Oklahoma car that needs
a complete rebuild. Farme is good and the body is straight..above average
but needs some touch up. Interior needs complete restore also. This is a
good clean, straight starter car for someone to rebuild.....what is is
worth?

I also have a 1956 265ci V8 that we pulled out of a car several years ago
and ran great.....what is something like that worth as 'trading stock'.

Any input would be appreciated as I have been out of the market for a
couple of years.

Thanks for the responses.

I am looking for a 57 Nomad. I want one that is updated. Prefer 350,
700R, A/C, PDB, etc. I want an everyday driver but it has to look good
although not necessarily "show" condition. There can be no rust at all on
it or I am not interested! I have a couple of vehicles for sale or I
would consider trading up or down for the right Nomad.

47 Indian Chief Motocycle. Restored to original, trophy winner and driver.
$26,000 and 1996 Suburban, loaded and tricked out. This has it all and
it has been babied since new. Asking $24,500. Photos and more info
available via email at sjsnakeman@home.com or elliotce@songs.sce.com.

I and my nephew enjoyed the get together at your house on Sunday. Although
not a lot of classics showed up because of the weather, the ones that did
were appreciated. I want to thank you and your wife for opening your house
to all of us. Take care and when I get my 57 up and running I will come by
to visit again. I enjoyed the many conversations with the other chevy nuts
that were there.

The Del Ray Club Coupe was a 210 with a post.

Chevy called the hardtops (no posts)
Sport coupe 2 door
Sport sedan 4 door

The confusion probably stems from coupe GENERALLY being used solely for
the 2 door hardtop - but the Del Ray was a CLUB coupe.

Some of you have been writing in about disc brake brackets and the
problems you have had with CCI's. They like many other vendors sell a
one piece welded bracket. These brackets cause more problems with
alignment and you have to adjust the tie rods shorter. I also have had
customers tell me that these type brackets don't line up properly and
they have had a loss of turning radius.
We sell a two piece bracket set-up that mounts directly to your stock
spindles. It is a better engineered kit that has been improved because
of the previous problems with the older style welded brackets.
If anyone is interested in this kit give me a call. Our kits come with
all the hardware, spindle nuts, and seals. Cost is $120.

Just a quick question, does anyone out there in the Palms Springs area

anyone that can install air conditioning in a 57 Nomad. Also about how many

It cost him about $2000 including the air conditioner. It took 2 days.

I came across something interesting about engines. As most of you know,
the most wear on an engine is during startup and up until it's at
operating temp. One reason is the oil doesn't fully circulate right away,
especially if the car's not used daily. But what I found most interesting
was that until the engine is at operating temp. the water that has
condensed in the oil does not burn off which causes acids to form which
causes wear.

Bob,
I'm not an electrician, but I know a little about electricity. I would say

that she took the extra 5ft, cut it in half and ran a wire from the heater
plug to the ground and one from the outlet to the ground. Am I close??
-Warren

Editor's note. Very close. As you can see from the posts, several people
knew that of the 3 slots in a standard plug in, only 1 has electrical power
to it. All that is needed
to power anything electrical is 1 wire with the electricity and a return
path for the electricity to the
earth. Shraon just took 1000 feet of wire and connected one end of it to
the slot on the plug in that has electricity and the other end of the wire
to 1 plug on the block heater. She tired one end of the rest of the wire
to the other flat plug on the block heater and tired the other end to
anything that would conduct electricity to the earth (water pipe or rod in
the ground).

This method does not comply with the electrical code anywhere and can be
unsafe. However it works.
I do not recommend doing this. Modern plug ins have 3 slots for a good
reason. They are safer.

I do recommend that you do as I did and replace the plug ins in your bath
rooms and kitchen with Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters. This an added
safety feature. These will prevent anyone getting a shock from anything
connected to this plug in. Please consider these if you have very young
children in you house.

Anyone had any experience with temp. gauge on 57. Sending unit is ok and
gauge is ok and as best I can test the wiring is fine. Any ideas?
Gary White
gwhitrun@mindspring.com

To Gary:
I changed my '55 over to an electric temp gauge from a '56 last summer. All
the components checked out but the gauge wouldn't work. After I had removed
and replaced the sending unit about 5 times, I ran a tap in the manifold
threads to clean them out and installed the sending unit without the
Teflon
tape I had used before. It worked. It seems that all the gunk was
insulating the sending unit from the engine. I've never had anything like
this happen before. By design, pipe threads in good condition shouldn't
need thread sealing compounds.

Re your observations about your Del Ray with posts. Actually, the marketing
guys
(both then and now) are pretty creative - and also inconsistent with their
use
of terminology!

Basically, the '55 Del Ray was a two door sedan body with a slightly
dolled-up
interior. It was not a two door hardtop (which is often referred to as a
Sport
Coupe). Normally, a coupe is thought of as a body style which has a shorter
passenger compartment (front to back) than that of a two door sedan. Chevy
actually built a coupe with posts (both a business coupe with no back seat
and a
five passenger sport coupe with a rear seat) in 1953, but dropped the body
style
after this.

Bob,

I am looking for a 1956 Chevy 265 engine but it has to be in Florida,
Georgia or South Carolina so I can pick it up over a weekend and get back
home... I would prefer a complete engine needing a rebuild but will take a
short block and find the heads later. Also need the powerglide. I am
thinking about putting my Nomad back to original. It now has a 350/350 in
it.

Thanks,

Well, I may not hit it exactly as you intended, but this should be close!

It's stated that the block heater is nominally 110 volt. It is also
mentioned
that it has a three-prong (grounded type) plug. The standard 110 volt
outlets
just had a two-prong plug prior to the later 1950's - and this will still
work
fine today, although with some associated increase in the risk of shock.
What
Sharon obviously did was to take the white lead from an outlet in the house
and
ground it. She then connected the black lead to the roughly 1000 foot
length of
wire and ran it out to the black lead on the block heater. She then located
a
good ground - driving a steel rod about three feet down into the earth wood
do
fine - and connected the white lead from the block heater to it.

If she'd had access to a voltmeter, she would have been able to measure the
voltage between the two legs of the line at the house and at the
outbuilding.
Depending upon the gauge of that 1000 feet of wire, the voltage drop would
probably have been significant - but the available voltage would still be
sufficient to warm the engine.

Ok, that's my stab at it! But please don't even mention those temperatures
down
around 20 below any more. Here in Michigan, they can indeed become reality
- and
the reality is not too far off now!

In regard to Mike Innello's question on the last list. He said <<<<<
my 55 Chevy # says
it is a Del Ray Sport Coupe, but it has posts. >>>>> He didn't give us
the number but if it's a 2124 (115,584 made) then it's called a Del Ray
Club Coupe, not Sport Coupe. They did make a 2154 (11,675 made) which
is a 210 Sport Coupe, but to my knowledge, the Sport Coupe did not have
the Del Ray interior which is the waffle pattern on seats and doors.

All Sport Coupes were postless aka "hardtops". A two door car is
correctly called a coupe, the sport coupe was postless, the 2-dr post
car was just a coupe. However, all post cars - 2-dr and 4-dr are also
called sedans. In '56 and '57 when they made the 4-dr hardtop, you
will notice it is called a Sport Sedan - the sedan referring to 4
doors. You can call a 2-dr sedan a coupe but you can't call a 4-dr
sedan a coupe as a coupe is defined as having only 2 doors. In the
original '55 ads TV and dealer film strips, coupe is pronounced as
coupe', which is the French pronunciation and would, with the accent on
the "e", makes the "e" pronounced as "pay" so coupe' sounds like
"coopay". We normally pronounce coupe as "coup" with a silent "e".

I assume Mike's car is a Club Coupe, not a Sport Coupe. Having said
that, it could be possible that someone might order a 2154, 210 Sport
Coupe with a Del Ray interior. I think I've said this on the list
before, but I have a friend whose father ordered a new "55 convertible,
black/white exterior combination with a red/beige interior. All the
info, that you see printed, says the '55 convertible black/white
exterior came with a gray/ivory interior. So here is a case where a
customer ordered something special. It would be interesting to have
that car still around and look at the cowl tag to see how it referenced
this "special" interior/exterior combination.
