Hi Bob et. al.

I have been rebuilding my brake system (drum/drum) and finally got the
master cylinder cleaned up. What a mess!! about 1/4 inch of rusty sludge
in the bottom of the reservoir. It cleaned up rather nice with a lot of
lacquer thinner and a final diluted muriatic acid (HCL) dip. Luckily the
cylinder portion itself is in good shape with minimal honing.

Anyway... the nut portion on the cap was badly knarled so I used a file to
try and square up the surfaces again. I notice a pinhole on two opposite
faces of the nut. Did I file to far or are these breather holes? I forgot
to look before I filed.

As an aside.. I was wondering why one couldn't make a "dehydrating bag"
to
keep water out of the brake fluid. They make what is called a molecular
sieve. These are small, inert, pellets which have an affinity for water
sized or smaller molecules. I use them where I work to keep water out of
various liquid reagents. It seems to me that one could make a small bag or
pouch of these sieves with a retrieval string. Place the bag in the brake
master cylinder reservoir and keep moisture from leaking into the system
(at
least from that location). This could even be used in the fuel tank to
soak
up moisture.

Hmmmmmmm maybe a new .com is in order.

Any thoughts, comments,.....
I think I am going to try it in a glass beaker first and test the idea by
adding small amounts (mists) of water and watch what happens with time.

Happy Holidays to all

Bob,
I came across some interesting information I wasn't aware of and wondered
if
you had come across any additional details on this. I've known for a long
time that there are two kinds of 1957 frame designs out there - one a two
piece and the other a one piece welded design. In fact the one piece was
called a California frame for a long time because it was incorrectly
thought
then that only California car plants used it.

But the new thing I learned is that the reason for the difference is that
one was made by Chevrolet themselves and the other was made by the A.O.
Smith company. The same company that made all Corvette frames from this
era. Any idea which design is the Chevy one?

I've been corresponding with the historical folks at A.O. Smith and did
determine they only had two frame plant locations supplying Chevrolet -
Granite City, IL and Milwaukee, WI in the late 50s/early 60s.

My guess would be that the one piece is from A.O. Smith, given the lower
number of them in the field, but that's only a guess.

Thanx,

Edward D. Shockley

Greetings Bob:

Several weeks ago I sent a notice about a 56 frame (non-convertible,
non-nomad) that I ran across that was stripped and powdered coated. The
frame is bare, but in beautiful condition. It is located in Jackson,
Mississippi and the owner wants $900. I got no response, so thought I
would put it out again. Thanks.

A little story to go along with the conalrad system indicated on 56-57
radio dials. I teach biology in a university and recently a youngster
needed to take a final exam early. When she chose Dec. 7, I remarked,
"an infamous day in history" but she had no idea what I was talking about.
Even after I told her about Pearl Harbor, she still did not understand.
Heaven help us. The youth are truly uninformed and unknowing. Next time
one of you parents go to gripe at a teacher about a grade, etc., ask "why
aren't you teaching even more than you do". We are far too soft on our
youth. I was ashamed for the young lady. I also felt a special and deeper
remorse for our men of service on Dec. 6 when I flew out of Honolulu and
looked over to see the Arizona Memorial and thought about the events of
reenactment to unfurl on Dec. 7. This war was before my birth, but not
outside of my knowledge. As we enter the Christmas/Holiday season, we all
need to learn more about history to prevent our mistakes of the past and
move towards a truly peaceful coexistence. I do not believe in peace at
all cost, but it takes all of us to "Have Peace on Earth and Good Will
Towards Men".

Happy Holidays to all!

Bob,
I include RJ's question here for reference:

"Hi Bob,

I have a question to the group.

Could someone PLEASE explain to me what a "Styeline DLX BelAir" is?
I've seen this posted in a couple of places on the net (like Ebay).

For 30 years I've been into 55 - 57 Chevies. Right now I own five (5) '57s,
that includes all three body styles. My first, a 57 BelAir 2-door Hardtop
(Sport Coupe), I've owned since 1972.

I have never seen (or heard) of a "Styleline DLX" body until now.
Any help answering this question? Thanks. RJ"

I have to ask the same question as RJ. I've had or been around Tri-Fives
since High School and never heard of a "Styleline Delux." Who came up with
that and what is it referring to? I may be missing something here since I
don't drive my '56 Nomad all that much. It just turned over 700 miles last
month.

I think everyone got the answers to your Conelrad question, however since
it
was never tested, know one knew that in the event of a nuclear explosion
all
the radios would have fried and no reception or transmission probably would

I have some information that may help. I have a special issue of Super
Chevy magazine (Chevy Classics, The Tri-Five Years) from the spring of
1997. They had an article just about this topic. They show the repair of a
liftgate from a '56 Nomad that was tweeked pretty bad. A guy named Jerry
Cabunoc has made up a special jig that he clamps the liftgate frame into
and applies low heat to relieve stress and allow the frame to hold it's
shape. You can send your frame to him to have it repaired. In the article
they say to send the frame without the glass and weatherstripping, and ship
the bare frame with the ends attached. His address is:

Jerry Cabunoc, 1011-1/2 N. E. Van Ness, Dept. SC, Santa Ana, CA 92701,

Hope this helps.

To Richard in reference to the carburetor check ball. I'm mostly
experienced
with later year carbs, but I was sure about a couple of years ago, when I
tried to rebuild my 55's 2 bbl that there was a ball in the chamber. As I
recall, I could visibly see it but I could not get it unstuck. I remember
that I even drilled the lead out of the lower bowl area to try reverse air
thru it. I still have a bad hesitation problem with mine and I thought it
to
be due to that. If there is no check ball, how does the fuel draft into the

chamber and and then hold to shoot fuel to the accelerator ports. If you
have
the answer, maybe you can solve both of our problems. Rod....

The correct association between a 747's flight and ground pressure is
described as lift. Bernoulli's Principle also known as the Venturi Effect
is
the factor that describes how aircraft are able to fly. They are NOT held
up
by pressure underneath the wings but by the absence of pressure on the top
of
the wing. As large aircraft pass overhead such as at the end of a runway
you
may notice wind turbulence from the air speed just like you would notice if
a
55-57 were to pass you standing on the side of the road. Or from the
turbine
exhaust ( Thrust ) as if a car were taking off on a dirt road and you could

see the tires spinning dirt out from under the rear bumper.
Bernoulli's Principle: As air speed ( Velocity ) increases, Pressure
Decreases. Notice that the distance around an airplane wing is longer at
the
top than the bottom. This causes velocity to increase and pressure to
decrease causing lift. On a top fuel or Alcohol Dragster wing this is
reversed to apply downward pressure on the car.
Sorry if I ramble on, I just hate to see people left guessing about

scientific fact.
Thanks for the List Bob it gives me something to look forward to when I
get
home from work.

Here is some trivia for you.

1. When was the last year on cars that Chevy had the power steering pump on

2. The band of Bill Haley (Rock Around the Clock) was named after what car?

Also, my wife wants to buy the safest SUV on the market. By sheer luck,
