I'm looking for info and advice on classic car insurance. I have State
Farm
right now but am considering getting insurance specifically for classics.
I
would appreciate replies on what other people have and what they think of
the companies. Also, besides Bob, if anyone has State Farm what has your
experience been when having a claim with them. Did they come through for
you?
I also could use some advice on wether to get springs/shocks from a chevy
parts repro. shop or let the shop who is going to do the job get them for
me. I have a 64 SS Impala but full size Chevy's are full size Chevy's so
I'm sure someone has had experience with both :)

hoping , someone out could help me with this question: I have a 1956 chevy
belair 4 door hard top , with a chevy 350 with a 350 turbo trans . the
question is, I would like to put in a chevy 305 with a 350 turbo, 400,or a

700 . I'm going for gas mileage, so would the 305 fit ? and if so what year

and with what trans will give me the best gas mileage . Oh and by the way I

have a 78 camero rear end a 2.41 ratio and am getting 18 miles per gal now
and would like to get at least 20-21 and i"ll be happy. thanks R Carreon

BOB: yes we drive beaters in the "Salt months" here in Cleveland Ohio.
Daily driver is a 87 Lesabre. The family mini van has limited( if
possible) use during these months for this reason. Money not spent on
new cars (that eventually rust) is money toward the 55 + 57 chevy.
Absolute beaters are getting more rare due to emissions inspections.
There are some "flappers" (doors/panels so rusted they flap when you
drive) out there with good motors though.
I prefer limited amounts of trivia as opposed to lots. However, it
is YOUR list -do what you want! One can always scroll.

Peace.

Bob, In regards to the question Juan Bezanilla had about "will a 60 series
fit"
on the rear for his 55 H/T. It should. I have 255/60/15X8 Center Lines
on my 56 4dr. Sedan and they fit just right. I have seen 275x60/15x8 on a
56
Nomad but this setup leaves very little room for tire growth. The
255/60/15x8 look real good from the back and from the side. Hope this
helps.

Dear Bob:

I love the pure concept of your list as I see it, helping preserve the 55,
56 & 57 Chevy. This is just my understanding of the pure concept. As you
own this list & do all of the work, you may wish to re-state what your
Mission is.

I frankly dislike the trivia & would prefer to see this list stay a bit
more
focused on 5, 6 & 7 fact & tech.

I've stated before that it is certainly easy enough for me to cruise
through the trivia in order to get to the information that I am interested
in, but as an example, this most recent list is mostly "trivia" related &
pretty much a dis-appointment to me personally.

Bob, you own it & do all of the work which I know is a huge effort. But you

asked for opinion & I for one would prefer to see a more controlled &
focused list of facts & tech with maybe another list for trivia buffs??

Thanks for the "soap box", Randy Hartsock

"Snakeman" poses an often-asked question re his '57 convertible. Certainly
cars
which haven't been driven much in a while can suffer from a number of
recurring
maladies. Updating with newer drivetrain and brakes can be one solution -
but I
wouldn't jump too fast.

If one is looking for reliability, you're going to have to go through all
of the
"new" items you're about to install to assure that they are in top-notch
shape.
Putting a similar amount of effort into re-building the existing stock
components will result in an equally reliable and serviceable ride.

One should keep in mind that '55-'57 Chevs with stock 235, 265 and 283
cubic
inch engines and drum brakes performed quite well and provided dependable
transport for millions for a number of years. With a little tender loving
care,
they can still be dependable today. If you think that the overdrive ratio
in a
700R4 is going to save you many $ in gas, think again. One would have to
rack up
an awful lot of miles to even come close to breaking even.

Then again, maybe what you really want is a street rod - if so go ahead
with a
clear conscience (but don't try to rationalize it on the premise that a
stock
'55-'57 can't be reliable!

Well I am in the IT business and can give you a
detailed answer but it will be very technical....LOL
and Internet technics are not the thing you want to
read here!! :) To keep things short: It could have
several causes and depends on where and when:
- The @home.com server could be down or could have
some other major problems like a user database loss.
- The Mx records from could be wrong (this is the
address of the @home.com server on the internet and can
be compared to a house address on a street).
The only thing you can do is sit and wait... The
@home.com people should be aware that after a while
they don't receive any mail anymore and will have to
contact their provider. Most of the time its not their
fault. At least when it concerns lots of email
addresses...

So hope your emails dont bounce again...

Bob, I think the trivia questions are fun, entertaining & sometimes
educational !!!!!!!! Keep up the good work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most of
your
trivia are related to much better times than what's going on in this world
today, just as our cars are!!!!!!! For anyone who isn't interested, they
can
always scroll down, but I read a lot of responses, and mostly with a
positive
attitude !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Bob,

Does anyone out there know the exact measurement in inches of the stock
tires for a 57 Chevy? I have some nice 16 inch rally rims from Wheel
Vintiques. Knowing the correct measurement would help me fit the right
size 16 inch tire to the rims. My own garage measurement came to about
26.75 inches. I have yet to come across the exact measurement in all my
reference material. Thanks.

Hey Bob!

The piece Robert Hamilton sent you is called "The Americans:
A Canadian's Opinion". It was broadcast in 1973 on Toronto
radio station CFRB. The piece was released as a record, but
was quickly re-recorded by then CKLW/Windsor (Detroit) news
director Byron McGregor late that year. It was actually a Top
Ten hit on Billboard's weekly Hot 100, early in 1974! Anyway,
those who think politics has no place in our hobby should go
to www.sema.org and learn about how bone-headed legislation
continually threatens our hobby, and how people like you and
me can make the difference. (And have made a difference!!!)
Add to that the various United Nations initiatives such as the
Kyoto Protocol and the ever-present possibility of more EPA
mandates...and you get the picture. Being aware of the issues
and letting your elected officials know how you feel really does
more good than you know. That's a big part of what being an
American means to me!

Bottom line: I'm not interested in building my '57 Handyman just
so I can go to the garage and admire it, I'm building it to drive,
daily. I don't want the freedom to drive my Classic legislated out
of existence in the name of "saving the planet". Robert, thanks
for your post...and Bob, I'd tell you to keep up the good work but
you're already doing that quite nicely. Guess I must be an "old
guy", 'cause I enjoy the trivia questions too.

on tv the other night i saw that NORAD in the cheyenne mountains came into
being in 1957. i have come across lots more stuff that began in 1957
(besides me being born! ;) ) what i gather is that 1957 seems to be a
very important year. before that the cold war didn't seem to worry most
people. in many ways that you look at American life there it seems that
the country changed or started changing after 1957. there was more
political and social unrest right after 1957.

i think perhaps 1957 was the 'last best year'. although people started
really getting frightened and divided after 1967.

while on the subject of cigarettes, anyone remember Old Gold cigarettes?
anyone remember other older brands that are obsolete?

while cigarettes are terrible things some of the ads were memorable while
growing up. such as 'silly millimeter longer' for some sort of '101'
cigarette. anyone remember which brand this was? maybe benson and hedges?

i sort of remember when filters were the new thing.
can you imagine smoking camel's without a filter?

some of those old commercials were really nice- with the dancing packs of
cigarettes. but not only cigarettes but other stuff.

who can remember the "atsa speecy spicey meat-a-ball!" alka seltzer
commercial? in fact in the 60's the alka seltzer commercials were among
the most memorable. this one was with a man and an Italian mom with a
checkerboard style tablecloth and when he'd taste the spaghetti he
would almost spit it out and say the above line.

another good alka seltzer one was the one with the 'stomach' that was
animated.

perhaps some of the best was the old Volkswagen commercials, especially
the one's in print. however coca-cola had maybe the most memorable of all
with the 'I'd like to teach the world to sing' and the one with the
football player tossing the jersey to the kid. in fact that was rated, i
think, as the best commercial ever. then there was the 'uncola.' i
collect older 7 up commercials and it's really nice to see family life in
all those large print ads in magazines.

anyone remember the 'hai karate' commercials? or the one where the guy
opens the mirror and someone else is on the other side looking in? i think
it was a razor blade or shaving cream commercial. that reminds me of the
'wilkinson sword blade' where the 2 swords would cross at the end with a
neat sound of metal clanging together.

and of course 'see the usa in your Chevrolet and some others with the car
all the way on top of a flat mountain out west. the hertz commercial where
the driver flies into the car from way above and the 'we're no. 2 we try
harder.'

L.S.M.F.T. was written on the bottom of the package of "Lucky Strike"
cigarettes.... These were manufactured by "The American Tobacco
Company." "American Tobacco" was a competitor of "The Phillip Morris
Company." Phillip Morris biggest sellers back then (early 1950's) was
the Phillip Morris, Commander..... This was your king sized variety at
85 mm..... It was like a Pall Mall and neither one had a filter tip....
The other Phillip Morris was known as Phillip Morris, Regular.... This
was 65mm long and sold in direct competition to Lucky Strikes and
Camels.... These are also non filtered.... Today Marlboro and Merits are
Phillip Morris Companies most familiar brand names... L.S.M.F.T. also
had a couple of other slang meanings..... Liberace Save Me From Truman
was one.

Someone said there were two meanings to LSMFT. Obviously, it started
as a Lucky Strike slogan and there must be a "X" rated version about an
article of lingerie which I don't know, but there was a third which I
learned in '50 or so in the conservative republican farm land of middle
Indiana - probably why I don't know the "X" version - to us, LSMFT also
meant "Lord Save Me From Truman". Truman, of course, the President
until Ike took over in '52. Bob, send me the "X" version if you find
time.
