I got your name from Bill Brown of DIXIE CLASSIC CHEVY CLUB. I need help
in
finding a way that I can trace the history of my 1957 210 Sedan. I know by

the tag the car was built in LA, California but I would like to know who
has
owned it and where it has been. I am just finishing a complete frame off
restoration and would like to have this information for my records. The
car
was very solid so I don't think it has been in Ohio for very long. Please
email your response to DSTPOLO@AOL.com

Please post this on your list. I know I wrote to you earlier but I can not

figure out how to access the listing. Help in this area would be great
also.

Thanks,
Sam

Editor's note. Sam, I wish you luck. Finding previous owners of a car is
very hard. I am told by my DMV (California) that there is a recent federal
law that will prevent them form giving out the address of previous owners
of cars. Has anyone successfully traced their cars ownership by getting
previous owners form the state.

This is regarding: Changing to 134A in your air conditioner. I got this
off the Bob Ford list last year. Comments?

It is really no big deal. Now the shops say it is and are over-charging
everybody. Simply replace your Dryer ( not a real expensive item). Change
the inlets for 134A adapters; screw in new ones over the old. Vacuum and
refill with 134A.

Editor's note. Someone advertises in Old Cars that they sell R-406A as a
direct replacement for R12. Has anyone tried it?

Good morning Bob,

Could you please put this to the list members. I know that it has been
discussed before but until recently I haven't needed the service. My 57
powerglide has been rebuilt and it now loses alot of fluid after you have
driven the car then park it for a few days. This should not happen
right????? I remember seeing that a few of the list members had known of
a place that sold the component that I need to stop this from happening
again. Could someone please forward me the info of the people that I can
talk to about this.
Many thanks once again,
Keep up the great work,
Happy trails,

Bob and all

I just got off the phone with Jeanette Rincon a few minutes ago. She is
the lady that is trying to get some help for her sick mom. She has
requested someone help by driving her Mom around in a classic Chevy. I
have volunteered to drive her. She said that she would love to have
more cars come as well. She is having a 50's party after the cruise.
She invited anyone that shows to join in on the party.
She lives in Perris, Ca and she asks that I be there at 6:00 PM on
Saturday May 5, 2001.
Who will join me in this? Not only would you be helping full fill her
dreams, but you might even have some fun.
I live in San Juan Capistrano and I will be leaving to drive over the
Ortega Hwy around 4:30. If you are interested, call me at 949-487-2425
or email me at SJSnakeman@home.com. If you want to go but live on the
other side of the mountain, call for directions and meet us there.

Bob- What is the name of the monthly car swap meet in your area and where
is it? (Long Beach?) I saw a quick shot of it on Popular Hot Rodding the
other day but did not catch the name. Does it go all year around or only in
the spring summer? Thanks for any info- Rick

There is a swap meet every month at the Long Beach Memorial Stadium. It is
very close to the 405 freeway.
There is a much larger swap meet about every 6 weeks at Pomona.

In response to Dave's comment about speedometer readings. If the speedo is

mechanical as opposed to electronic, the gear inside the transmission could

have the wrong number of teeth. On the back of a replacement gear
packaging,
there may be a chart showing what to do if the speedo reads wrong. On the
one I bought it was based on how many seconds it took to travel a mile at
55
mph.

I would also like to state that I don't have much more information on the
parts swaps I posted in the 4/27 posting. Sorry. Maybe someone out on the

list can provide more information.

Thanks for the great work, Bob.

Hi Bob,

In response to Dave's question on his speedometer reading to fast. If you
have a 350, 400, 700R4 models, any tranny shop would have differant
numbered
teeth gears for your car. Unscrew the cable from the transmission and
remove
the bullet from the transmission. Remove the bullet slowly so the gear
stays
with it. Count the teeth and if it's 18 then go to 20 and try it. Two teeth

more should do the trick for about 10 mph, if it doesn't, then go one or
two
more. They have these things laying all over so they would surely just
trade
you out. Powerglides and original 3 speed would be the same but parts
would
be hard to find. Rod......

Dave, all speedo heads are designed to operate at the same speed. The gear
ratio in the speedo drive in the transmission is what adjusts for the
correct ratio between the actual speed of the car and the speedometer head.
The gear you need will depend on the rear end gear ratio and the tire size
you use. Since your speedo is showing a faster speed than you are actually
going, you will need a gear with one or more additional teeth than what you
currently have. If you can't make it accurate by changing the speedo drive
gear in the transmission, you can use an external speedometer gear box to
achieve an accurate speed. But, before you spend a lot of time and energy
doing all of this, it would be wise to have the speedo head checked by a
speedo shop to assure that it is accurate. This is important to assure
that the relationship between the speedometer and the odometer is also
correct. Good luck!

I don't think I've ever seen sludge in a Powerglide transmission that would
prevent the fluid from draining through the drain plug hole. My guess is
that you removed the plug under the torque converter instead of the actual
drain plug a little further back.

Bob,

I also first thought the answer to your questions about the
international traveler was "George", but I quickly discarded that answer
because the way I read your question, he seems to be on a commercial
flight, and I know that current presidents do not fly on commercial
flights, they use Air Force One. Am I mistaken about the way you worded
the question?

Editor's note. The last president that flew a commercial flight was Nixon.
He wanted to show
people he was just a regular guy. Presidents often fly Air Force 1 from a
commercial airport so they
can get more exposure. Heads of state don't need a passport when they
enter a foreign country, however they must have the permission of the
country they are flying to before they enter. Also Air Force 1 is not
just 1 plane. When the president flys what ever plane he/she is on is Air
Force 1.

I am going to be in Las Vegas from May 15 through May 19. I was hoping
to visit any and all car related events. If I could hear from list
members who are in that area, I would appreciate it. The last time I was
there (1995), the Imperial Palace Car Museum was still there, but I
understand they have closed down and sold the collection. If there's any
other car museum operating in Vegas I would like to know about it.

Thanks,

For Dave with the speedo problem.

If it is always 10 mph over the head probably needs some work. If it is
always the same percentage off (ie 10% off at 30 mph means 33 and at 40
means 44 mph) then you can switch out the speedo gear and replace it with
the correct item.

If it is option 2 let me know and I'll send you a copy of a thorough
article that explains how to change it to the right gear and how to
figure out which gear to change to.

From: Editor

This is a subject about cars and taxes that seems unfair to me. In
California and I think most states that have a sales tax, you pay sales tax
every time you buy a car new or used. I can see it as fair when you buy a
new car. However if you sell the car for example a year after you bought
it, the next buyer also pays sales tax on the same car. So the state can
be collecting tax on the same car many times. I don't think that is fair.
Anyone have an opinion on this? Am I wrong in my thinking? If the state
gave the sales tax collected on the second sale to the first person that
bought the car, it would seem to me to be a lot fairer.
