Bob and List Members,
I am having a very difficult time in solving a fuel gauge problem with my
56.
I have gotten 4 different gauges from CCCI, still have two of them and
bought a used one through the mail. I just bought a brand new fuel sending

unit. It appears that the sending unit is working OK, however I am not
sure
of what the voltage variation should be. It currently reads about 3.4
volts
for full and 500 mv for empty. Two of the gauges do not move at all when
the
sending unit is moved from full to empty. The other one shows slight
movement on the empty side, but it is in the opposite direction (I know, I
though maybe I had it wired backwards, but changed that and it worked the
same way??? Note that all this testing was done at the battery, so vehicle

wiring is not the problem. Does anyone know where I can get a rebuilt or
NOS
fuel gauge that is guaranteed to be OK? I appreciate any help and Bob,
keep
up the good work.

john,

a faster water pump may not help. could hurt. faster water flow doesn't
mean less heat. water does not stay in radiator very long so it can
actually get hotter.

some people get a smaller water pump pulley so the pump spins faster. this
might be better than getting a new pump. but it may not work except maybe
some cars perhaps.

May I add something to the controversy over VIN numbers that don't match?
A
friend of ours purchased a very nice Mustang at the Portland swap meet and,

after bringing it back home, he immediately took it to be inspected and
licensed for Washington State. The VIN numbers didn't match and the
inspecting officers literally took it apart. He did eventually get it
back,
much the worse for wear. The fact that he purchased it legitimately and
was
trying to obey the law did not matter. Whether you are the restorer or an
innocent buyer, it pays to know about the VIN numbers. If they don't
match,
you need a good explanation why. Jan Mowrey

The VIN number stamped on the frame is the only number that I would use
to determine the cars ownership.
Yes there are alot of Chevy's out there that have swapped frames but
when you get right down to it the frame is what counts. When I had my car
apart I did Check the VIN on my car with that of the frame and it was
right. On my 57 Corvette the VIN tag is attached to the door jamb with two
philips screws at the factory.
If the VIN on the frame didn't mean anything you would never see the
Police, etc. checking them for a stolen car.

Has anyone on the list done a conversion such as this? A client of mine
just got rear-ended in her '95 Impala SS (LT1 & 4L60E tranny), and the
insurance company declared it a total. I suggested that she buy it out of
salvage, and I would apply whatever it cost to my fee for services for her.

I would like to put this late-model drive train in my '57 sedan project,
but
am worried about the details of the OBD-1 computerization of the engine,
trans, cooling system, instrumentation, and virtually everything else on
the
car. I guess if I can strip EVERYTHING out of the donor car and transfer
it
directly over to the new body (the Classic), I should be able to make it
all
work, eh? I know it sounds like a lot of work, but as an alternative to
building up the motor I want, the tranny that will work well with it, a
properly coordinated and stout rearend, setting up rear disc brakes,
dialing
in the carburetion or injection to operate as smoothly as a
computer-controlled system, designing an adequate cooling system for our
Nevada desert summer temps, and all else to make it work, I would be WELL
over the cost and labor to make this major update to the car.

I would love to talk with anyone else who has dropped a late-model
small block into a Classic chassis, and retained the PCM, as opposed to
bypassing it and swapping on a carburetor and making the trans manual
lockup, as I have seen done a few times.

Anyone?

The Fourth of July iz coming and here's a fun and easy thing to do with
your car. On a '57 you can mount two small American flags, in an X pattern
around each of the hood nipples, a little tape keeps them together and
affixed. On 55's and 56's, take the flag stem and put it in the fold of a
torn off matchbook cover or any similar piece of lightweight cardboard
paper and slip the two flaps under your loosened headlight frame so the
flags stick straight up on the outside edge of your headlights. Tighten 'em
down and you'll have two flags flutterin' just like a president heading for
a grassy knoll. When I lived in the babe-infested state of Texas I used to
run a 'Merican flag on one side and a Texas flag on 'tother. It looks
swell, doesn't hurt your rod and gets lots of smiles from the family faces
pressed to the glass of all the SUV's you pass.
Happy 4th,

I would prefer to have the original type so I don't have to change out the

I will rebuild the control valve and cylinder if necessary. Any other

Bob, I agree that only under adverse (heavy duty) conditions is an engine
affected by unleaded fuel, this not only applies to early engines but to
more
recent engines that state the required octane needs to be in the 92-94
range.
I operate my '57 on 89 ARCO fuel in CA (notice I do not call it gasoline)
and
my '62 Vette with 10.5 compression with no pinging, I do not baby my cars,
the rule is to make sure the car is tuned and maintained properly using the

manufacturers guidelines. When I was young(18-20) I used gas to clean parts
without regard to exposure to lead(who knew?) and I am 60 now and was told
the other day I look 50(I'm 17 in my mind, scares me when I look ina

Bob,
I had an overheating problem with my '57. The cure turned out to be very
simple. Move the radiator as close to the radiator support bar as possible
so that air will not flow around the radiator.
I agree with everyone that most TV's still have filaments in the CRT. I
don't think LCD's have filaments.
The opposite of an ohm (measurement of resistance) is mho (measurement of
conductivity or conductance). Reading the resistance of a resistor is easy
if you know the color code. How can you tell what the conductance of a wire
is? I know that most cable had a velocity factor that should be used when
calculating wavelength of that wire. Is velocity factor then a measurement
of conductance? These are not questions that I have the answers to. I
really don't know.

HI BOB. THE MHO IS THE RECIPROCAL OF THE OHM (1/OHM) AND IS THE UNIT OF
CONDUCTANCE.
A BIT MORE ON THE FILAMENT. IT GETS HOT (DC) AND HEATS UP THE CATHODE. THE
CATHODE THEN EMITS ELECTRONS.CONTROL OF THE FLOW OF ELECTRONS THRU THE TUBE
IS
ACCOMPLISHED BY VARIOUS GRIDS BETWEEN THE CATHODE AND THE PLATE. THE NUMBER
OF
GRIDS CAN BE FROM NONE ( A DIODE) TO 5 OR MORE. A 5 GRID TUBE IS A PENTODE.
THIS SHOULD GET ALL THE OLD TECHS JUICES FLOWING. I LEARNED ALL THIS WHEN
IN
THE NAVY BACK IN 60-63.

Here's a question that I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere else: I

just learned from a friend that in 1956, I luxury liner ship named the
Andrea
Doria was struck by another ship and sunk. There may have been Chrysler
concept cars of the 50's on the ship at the time of the sinking. Is this
true and which cars were on there? This ship is only under about 200 feet
of
water and divers make numerous trips to it and bring back some neat stuff,
but man, what a treasure inside! I think 1950's Chrysler concept cars are
neat, and although some are still around, some were scrapped (and lost on
this ship??)

Andrea Doria sank.

No, no business man here. And I don't believe in changing 150s or 210s
over to BelAirs. My 56 wagon, as far as I know has a clean title. I was
just wondering what is considered "altering or tampering with the VIN #".
A
door or quarter panel is a part of the body that can be replaced with no
legal altercations; why not replace an entire body? I understand that the
whole gist of the VIN rules is to safeguard against car theft, but where is

the line drawn as far as replacing components of the car?

Hi Bob and others,

I am looking for a 1957 Chevy BelAir 2dr. Hardtop somewhere in southern
California. NOT restored. can be in any condition but not a total junker at

least a rolling chasis with all glass semi to almost completely straight
body and complete interior and all outer trim. my budget allows for up to
$3,000 or less. It does not need to have an engine I have a 350ci ready for

it. I know this is for chevy's but i am also selling a 1962 Ford F-100. It
has a 292ci V-8 in it (stock) this is the upgrade engine from the factory.
everything on the truck is stock like the engine, single exhaust with the
cross over pipe, wheels and tires with a few exceptions for a few things
like, new grant steering wheel, daytona 3-speed manual floor shifter,
kenwood am/fm cassete (fits into original spot) it has some minor dings in
it that can be fixed needs new front bumper. It is a daily driver. It has a

new electric fuel pump all gaskets have been changed except for the heads
they were fine. I have another set of heads for it that come with the
truck.
The crank has been redone and all the bearings have been changed.
Transmission has been rebuilt by good friend from Cadillac should last long

time. It also has a braned new Line-X spray in bed liner LOOKS GREAT!!! For

more info you can email me back at bdf19@hotmail.com I am willing to trade
for a BelAir or just sell the truck I am asking $3500 for the truck.

Hi Bob,

With a lot of talk about altered VINs and titles, I personally couldn't
begin to count the number of times I've met someone, who THOUGHT they just
bought a BelAir that was really a Two-Ten.

Most of these people get VERY irritated when you explain this to them. I
always thought, this was a mis-representation of what you JUST purchased,
and quite possibly, illegal? But how many people know the difference in the
body styles?

I just pointed this out three weeks ago to a woman trying to sell her '57
Two-Ten dressed like a BelAir at a Swap Meet for $12,500. Her husband got
VERY irritated. "IT is too a BelAir, the title says so." He screamed.

A show I attend every year, has a class for Sedan Deliveries. More than
once, people have showed up with altered Wagons, and swore they WERE
Deliveries (until you show them the VIN number, and Cowl tag). One local
guy, removed his VIN and Cowl tags so you couldn't see them. Too bad he
forgot the cable holes in the tail gate opening.

I have also known people who did off frame restorations, bought an extra
frame at the Salvage Yard to set their body on, then sold the car later
without ANY problems.

True there may be a way to get the frame numbers to show up, but how many
REALLY care unless the car is stolen?

For quite some time, buying the used Cowl Tag to fit YOUR car, was very
popular
. But then again, if you bought this car, you weren't buying what you
thought you were.

Thanks. RJ
