From the editors of Super Chevy magazine, is a mag called Chevy
Classics,
with mostly tri-Chevy articles, etc. In an article in the Spring 2001
issue,
they document how it is now possible to take a 4-dr sedan and reskin the
car
to make a convertible out of it, needing only a door and top bows off a
convertible to complete the conversion. So, looks like those 4-dr sedans
may
be worth something finally! LOL. Unfortunately, their comments also
mentioned
the caveat that amateurs "should not try this at home", as they used a
professional to complete their conversion, and it took two weeks for him to

do it. However, if you can afford the time or money to do it, it IS
possible.
Heck, I have 3 of those 4-dr sedans, and one is definitely a candidate for
the conversion. The project car received new floor pans, interior skins,
exterior door and rear quarters, the sheet metal between the trunk and rear

boot, the X-frame member which is now reproduced. So the only thing left of

the original car is the front cowl and main frame. Quite a story! I at
least
have hopes of owning a convertible with this article providing some promise

of the possibilities. Although the purists may howl, why not use some of
the
more common body style to use as a basis? Sure works for me, although I
still
can't afford the conversion on my salary (yet). Who knows, though, one day,

it may just happen. :) I can alway dream. First, though, I need to finish
working on my 5 Gremlin project cars, got the first one rolling last nite
and
took it for a test drive. :) Anyway, just thought I'd mention this magazine

and article, as I'm sure most of us would LOVE to own a '57 drop-top at
some
point in our lives. Maybe we can. Enough said, later folks

Hi Bob and fellow list readers,
I recently noticed that there are people on eBay are selling Jacking
Instruction sheets for upwards of $4.00 each plus shipping of $2.20.
These are available through Ralph Roberts for $1.00 each, .90 cents if you

send a money order. This was just FYI, I am not busting on anyone who uses
eBay I buy alot of stuff for my car there. Just not decals.
The 55 210 2dr post in my garage is finally going back together. I
finished
the chassis and have reconnected the body. I rented a rotisserie jig from
a
friend for $2 a day. It took me 32 days to get the body off, sandblast the

frame, and clean, patch and paint the belly of the beast. New springs, new
lines, new mounts. Shock brace, drop blocks (2in). I didn't think that
was
too bad for a months work, mainly on the weekends.
It's a shame nobody will ever see it, huh. I hope the rest comes out as
nice
as the bottom.
To all who are in the middle of a project......I salute you!!! You are
doing
fine.

These LIFE SAVERS would be, Keith Marang, Don Kent, Robert Willis and

full of money put on it.
And a very big Thankyou to you Bob for your list. None of this would have
been possible without your services.

By the way, Bob, I loaned the video tapes "The Look and Feel of the 50's"

I am planning to loan them to the nursing homes in the area to see if some

I saw that Classic Chevy has a "normal" over-the-counter air filter that

the oil bath element and this drops in and, presto-chango, you have a

Re: Is the reason some current cars don't have 4 wheel disk brakes
cost? Are disk brakes more costly to make than drum brakes?

A dealer mechanic told me the reason is because drum brakes still
provide the best mechanism for an effective parking brake. Don't know
if that's true, just what I was told.

Editor's note. Anyone know how the disk brake conversions kits for our

Bob, can you or any list members give me some good advice on camshafts????

I am putting in a new engine in my 56, & I was told to BEWARE, that it's
easy to install the WRONG cam. Was told a 55 is different? What about a
57?
Are there any special things to look for that are distinguishing
differences
between 5, 6 or 57 cams???? I believe when I got it, the guy said it was
for
55-57's????? Also from that same engine which I actually rebuilt about 25
years ago, I installed the WRONG camshaft & it had been sitting under my
work bench all this time(assembled engine) When we took the cam out, we
discovered it was for SOLID LIFTERS, so I can't use it !!!!!!!!!!!!! It is
still new, never Ran & I would sell it for 35.00 + shipping if anyone
interested! Top priority is however, finding out if the one I have NOW, IS

correct!!!!!!!

All car radios operate on 6 volts or 12 volts DC. The radios all have
internal circuitry to change the DC to AC as needed. In addition it
makes no difference if you have a generator or an alternator you still
have DC, the alternator changes the AC to DC internally. Go ahead and
connect your radio to the proper circuits and turn it on. Be sure that
the speakers are connected before turning it on, otherwise you will
damage the audio output section.

Hans, your inquiry re 12 Volt DC/AC indicates that you have apparently
misunderstood some info provided to you in the past!

Actually, the power supplied TO THE RADIO for all '55, '56, and '57 Chevy
models
was and is 12 Volt DC. Originally of course, the car was also equipped with
a
generator that produced DC and charged the 12 Volt battery. Many cars have
since
been switched to use an alternator. However, the AC produced within an
alternator is changed to DC through the use of internal diodes and the DC
output
still charges a 12 Volt battery.

I presume that the confusion arises from the fact that a transformer can
not
function on DC. Therefore, the original radios in '55-'57 Chev's (and most
other
vehicles of the pre-transistor era) used an internal vibrator to change the
12
Volt DC input to a pulsating DC. This pulsating DC approximated an AC
current,
and could be stepped-up with a transformer to the higher plate voltages
required
for vacuum tube operation.

If your radio is connected to a 12 Volt DC source, but is not now working,
check
to see if you can hear a "hum" when it is turned on. If you can't, I'd
suspect
the vibrator. There are a number of things that can go bad, but I'd advise
taking the unit to a shop that specializes in servicing these old vacuum
tube
radios.

Good Luck!

Bob,

You'd questioned whether there was an "escape clause" in most Federal
Safety
laws to the effect that if you produce less than 1,000 vehicles/year, then
you
didn't have to comply.

This is not, and never was, the case. Actually, there was a provision to
the
effect that if one produced less than 1,000 vehicles per year you could
apply
for an exemption with respect to a number of FMVSS. The actual grant of an
exemption was, by no means, automatic. There are several bases for
requesting an
exemption, such as for the production of an experimental low-emission motor
vehicle, to introduce a vehicle offering enhanced safety, economic
hardship,
etc. For those who might really be interested, check out the NHTSA website
at
<http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/>. Incidentally, the Morgan gained exemption from
a
number of FMVSS and was imported from Great Britain through use of the "low
emission vehicle" route (they were converted to run on propane).

As to the use of drum or disk brakes on the rear of a vehicle: yes, drums
are
generally cheaper. It should be kept in mind that the tooling for the drum
system was normally paid for years ago (and this was part of the story).
Another
factor is that one has to remember that the vehicle manufacturer has to
provide
some type of a friction parking brake system to meet a number of State
requirements (no, the Park position on an auto-trans vehicle won't comply).
Drum
brake systems can be readily adapted to function as a parking brake (via
cable
actuation), but doing the same on a rear disk system often involves
considerable
additional expense and hardware (check the Corvette rear disk system which
actually incorporates small rear drums and shoes for this purpose).
