I'm in the market for a new car, but frankly, nothing out there right now
is very inspiring. For the $30K that I'll spend to buy some generic
Amerieuroasian auto, I'd much rather have a classic. Does anyone know of a
place where I could secure a loan for such a purchase? I'm aware that if
available, the interest rate will be high (certainly higher than the 0.0%
currently offered), but I'd like to at least see if this is a possibility
for me.

Thanks as usual Bob!

Jim Wargowski
JWargowski@aol.com

Editor's note. Yes, you can buy a new car for 0.0 interest rate but since
there is no such thing as a free lunch, have you ever wondered how this is
done? What really happens is when you finance a car with a zero percent
interest rate, you are paying too much for the car. You are buying the
interest rate down with the excess amount you pay for the car. That is why
most offers of free interest give you the option of the low/no interest
rate or a rebate if you pay cash.

Please don't change your TriFive list. I belong to 3 other lists and your
TirFive list is by far the
best and it is also the most fun. I have learned a great deal from your
list in ways you probably
did not think of.

Besides learning a lot about my 57 BelAir, I learned about something in my
profession that I
should have known but didn't. I am the executive chef at a large St Louis
restaurant. Your
question about sugar in salt really got to me. I told my wife that I
thought you had lost your
marbles. She looked at a box of Morton Salt and told me that you were
correct. There is sugar
in salt. I must admit I had to see this for myself. Sure enough on the
box of Morton salt, is a list
of ingredients and dextrose (sugar) is one of them.

I ask our seasonings supplier to find out about this for me. This is what
he found out. Sugar is
added to salt for 2 reasons. The most important reason is that sugar makes
salt taste better. That
was not a total surprise as we add sugar to a lot of things we cook to make
them taste better. We
add sugar in such small amounts so that the sweetness of sugar does not
have any effect on the
food except that the food just tastes better.

Sugar also helps the iodine remain stable in the salt. If you will check
the salt container of salt
that does not have iodine in it, you will see that no sugar has been added.
Morton took the sugar
out of salt without iodine about 10 years ago because they were afraid
people would avoid using
salt if they knew sugar was in it. Sugar was thought to be high in
calories. This was a marketing
decision because the number calories from sugar in 1 table spoon of salt is
less than 1.

I'm looking for a brand-new '55/'56 Chevy fuel tank for my station wagon.
Anyone know where I can find the best price on one? The shipping charge
would also have to be a consideration since obviously a lesser -priced tank

with a big shipping charge is not as good of a deal as a higher priced tank

with free shipping.

I was searching the web the other day, and ran across a message board,
and was scrolling down the newer messages, when one caught my eye...it said

that they wanted info on a el morraco, the caddy-looking '57 Chevy. Well, I

responded to the guy, then got an email back from him the next day. Seems
his
boss has one, bought it about 15 years ago from a guy who had no clue what
he
had, thought it was a customized job and was going to "restore" it to
original. Yikes! Anyway, the "boss" traded the guy a partially restored Bel

Air for the car, and has kept it without restoring it since. I waded thru
my
old literature, and found a Nov. 93 Issue of Super Chevy with THREE in it,
saying that only 5 El Morocco's are known to exist today, one of them a
'56.
I don't have any more updated info, does anyone else know how many there
are
now? Wow, to have one of those cars....uh uh uh! Anyway, I scanned the
article for the guy ( there's an even better one in an earlier Special
Interest Auto magazine a few years earlier, I think), but it is just wild
how
some things surface after all these years. Wish I was that lucky...I guess
my
"rare" '78 Gremlin GT will have to suffice for me. :) Anyway, just thought
I'd see what else I can find out about these cars for this guy. Any idea on

value?

I'm looking for the nostalgia custom look, any suggestions for swapping in

To clean the engine of carbon, go to a GM dealer and get a can (NOT the
aerosol spray) of GM Top engine cleaner for about $6. Works great,
all you have to do is buy a 1/4" tube, stick it in one of the vacuum line
holes at the TB (youll have to remove one vac line) run the engine, at 1/2
throttle until the bottle is almost empty, then let the motor stall, let
it sit for 15 min, then start her up and finish the bottle. Lots of
smoke came out my tailpipe :)

I worked at a dealership in a car prep department and I can tell you
the best stuff to use is the stuff they use. If you really wanna take
care of the car there are some must haves...they use a spray on wax
called 'showroom shine', that is a definite must have, its purple and
smells a little like suntan lotion, apply with a very soft cloth like
finishing cloth, make sure not to use any types of rough cloth or
terry cloth with too much pressure they will eventually scratch up
the car, also get ahold of a claybar, mothers has a good one, you use
this with the showroom shine to remove dirt and other road crap about
once a month...with the clearcoat on your car I would say depending
on dirtiness wash at least once a week and apply the showroom shine
afterwards.,.buy a California duster to use in between washings to
remove light dust/dirt...also make sure to use a different wash mit
for the lower part of the car body as the dirt tends to be worse
there...two other things the prep depts. at car dealers use is wheel
acid, its safe for all types of wheel and its a spray on sit and
spray off so its very simple, also there is stuff called 'red hot', its
great for tar removal to clean the tires, fabric, and any stains in
general, its just a good thing to have there...as for washing the
vehicle do not use dish soap...buy specific car wash fluid and dont
use it excess. most of the things i listed that the car dealers use
is only sold in larger quantities but if you religiously clean your
car it will go fast. i hope i was a little helpful.

It is a good idea to pre-wet a fuel filter with clean fuel before
installing it.

We have 2 '55 chevy's; a BelAir 2 dr.hardtop that we bought in '65 that
has been restored several times, and we drive it to runs and cruise with it
all summer, the other (which we bought in about '83) is a 210 2 door Pro
Street, that goes from gas station to gas station. My husband built both
of these cars, the Pro Street was frame off restoration that took several
years as we were trying to raise children & build a Pro Street at the same
time, both very expensive projects. We love these cars and have passed
that love on to our children, our oldest son has a 55 BelAir 2 dr. hardtop
that he bought when he was 19 (21 years ago), our middle son bought a 67
Camaro when he was 19 (14 years ago). I both cases they & their dad did
all the work on their cars including the paint. The only thing that is not
done in our garage is upholstery. Our daughter is still hoping her dad
will give her the Pro Street.

I enjoy your newsletter, keep up the good work.

Bob, I have a 57 Chevy and/or Corvette dual point dist, part number
1110891, for a 2-4 car. What is it worth and do you know anyone that might
be looking for one? I was going to put it on my 57 Nomad, but it is not a
2-4 car and would only be wasted. I may sell it. Thanks, Ken

Greetings to Bob and Richard, (Lovemy56),

It's always great to discuss the great musical groups and artists of the
50s,
60s.
With so much rap, hip hop, urban, metal, techno, and such, it's a welcome
relief to hear the 'classics' from the Golden Age of rock!

Ironically, a lot of teens, and preteens, seem to enjoy the music also, as
evidenced by concert attendance. The Beach Boys, Paul Simon, Paul Revere
and
The Raiders, James Taylor, Billy Joel, and Elton John, continue to attract
a
large and enthusiastic audience whenever they appear. I was pleased to
visit
with several of these acts over the past summer. My, its great to be able
to
hear a true 'melody,' and understand the lyrics!

As to Richard's question about "Jan & Arnie," Arnie Ginsburg, Jan Berry and

Dean Torrence were all high school buddies. J & D attended University High
School in West Los Angeles. Both were on the football team and would often
harmonize, you guessed, it the shower room. They started a group called The

Barons, basically mimicking the popular Doo Wop groups of the era.

Dean went into the Army in '58, (six months active duty) and, while he was
away, "Jenny Lee," (inspired by a local LA stripper) hit the airwaves by
"Jan
& Arnie." Two other singles on a small indie label, Arwin Records, followed

that year, including "Gas Money" and "I Love Linda." "Jenny Lee" went to #8

and "Gas Money" went to #21.

By that time, Dean rejoined the group, which had then switched to Dore
Records with the Top 10 single, "Baby Talk." It was about that time that I

meant the group at a Dick Clark "Bandstand" program taped at the Treasure
Island Naval Base across the Bay from San Francisco. I was a high school
sophomore at the time.

Ironically, barely three years later, in May, '62, I would present Jan and
Dean during my senior year at El Camino High School in Sacramento. I booked

the group a number of times in '63 and '64, including producing their
'live'
concert performance in Sacramento that was part of their "live" album. Our
featured guitar player on the show was a young man named Glen Campbell,
whom
I paid $200 for his day's work!

With the advent of the "surf sound," or what has become known as the
'California sound,' Jan & Dean's popularity grew, starting with their first

#1 record, "Surf City," in 1963, written by Jan and lead Beach Boy Brian
Wilson. Other hits followed, including "Honolulu Lulu," "Sidewalk Surfin,'"

"Ride The Wild Surf," "Dead Man's Curve," "Drag City," and the very popular

"Little Old Lady From Pasadena," which went to #3 in 1964.

While there were other hit singles, including "Heart and Soul" on Gene
Autry's Challenge Records, the Top 10 success that had been a fixture on
the
national charts for seven solid years, eluded them.

Jan and Dean tour, but infrequently, and the injury caused by that fateful
auto accident in 1964, has, unfortunately, taken its toll on Jan. Its hard
for him to get around and he's had persistent health problems.

Dean, however, is a Grammy award winning commercial artist, and while you
may
have never realized it, you've seen his creative talents on album jacket
after album jacket, ranging from Harry Nilsson, The Buckinghams, Linda
Ronstadt, Steve Martin, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and The Beach Boys, to
Chicago. In fact, he designed the ever popular "Chicago" logo that is still

used to this day.

Regards,

Fred Vail

What wonderful memories the discussion of drivein movies brought back.
Thanks for making an old man's day. I Lived in Branson Missouri in the
1950s and have been to Joplin and Neosho many times. I tell people that I
lived in Branson before Branson knew what country music was. You seem to
know a lot about Missouri for someone that lives in California. Have you
ever lived in this area?

Also, I met Fred Vail many years ago at some music concert. I forget which
one. I am sure he does not remember me from that meetings but I want to
tell you he is one nice guy.

Ralph Benson

Editor's note. It only took me 6 years to finish college in Springfield
Missouri. You might say I was intellectuality challenged. I can't believe
I was ever that young. I remember that the only reason you went to Branson
was to go fishing and Highway 76 was just a hilly road and Highway 65 from
Springfield to Branson was a terrible road. My how times have changed.

For Fred Vail. I have heard that Nashville and Branson are not exactly on
the best of terms. Any truth to that rumor?
