Bob, maybe this isn't the place for venting, but I wanted your readers to
know how rude the guys at Southern Rods & Parts are. Starting with an
e-mail
to the company about their shorty 55/57 headers, would they fit on a 62
Nova,
as I have decided to put the crate motor I have in it instead of my 55.
Their comment was, " I don't have to guess, they won't work, but we sell
the
ones you need". I called them the next day and the guy who answered, who
was
supposed to be the manager said, " we don't make them for that car", so I
had
told him that someone e-mailed me saying that they did. I heard him ask
around the shop and finally he decided they did have them. Well, the ones
they sent me for my 55 have 2 1/2 collectors and the exhaust flange they
sent
only had a 2" pipe, so I asked if they had 2 1/2 exhaust flanges instead of

the 2". The guy responds, "well that's just the way they come". He was real

short with me and didn't give a dang whether he sold me anything or not.
There isn't anyway that I really talked to a manager, so I thought he may
read your board, if so reevaluate your staff, you have a great idea for
business. Thanks, Rod......

Greetings, Bob,

I think that the whole Branson vs. Nashville thing is just a lot of
PR--both
communities have something to offer and each are totally different. Branson

is in the Lake of the Ozarks area and has a lot of tourism because of the
numerous theaters, crafts, timeshares, fishing, etc. It has only one
recording studio that I'm aware of, if that one is even open.

Nashville, on the other hand, is "Music City, USA," because of the high
concentration of record labels, publishers, studios, managers, and artists
who make their home here. Nashville has been attracting labels and
publishers
since the 1920s, when the Grand Ole Opry debuted on WSM Radio. It
celebrated
it's 76th Anniversary this past week.

Capitol Records was the first 'major' label to have a presence here, but
now
we have over twenty-five country and Christian labels.

Tomorrow night, Wednesday, November 7, is the Annual CMA Awards. It's a
huge
event with parties surrounding it all week long. Ironically, while
Nashville
has a number of what we call 'listening rooms,' -- small acoustic rooms
that
seat 100 to 150 folks, and are pretty much 'singer/songwriter' "in the
round"
type rooms, Branson has approximately twenty-five large, lavish Vegas type
'showrooms,' featuring the more 'seasoned' old pros from pop, rock, and
country music.

Some have large ensemble casts, with no 'name' headliner, while others
feature major legends, including Andy Williams AND Glen Campbell
(together),
Mel Tillis, Mickey Gilly, The Osmonds, The Platters, Bobby Vinton, (if
"Roses
Are Red" does not bring back high school memories, then you must be under
50!), The Sons of The Pioneers, The Lawrence Welk "Show" (obviously,
'without' the guest of honor, Lawrence), and Jimmie "Honeycomb" Rogers, my
dear friend of forty-three years (note: I met him when I was 14).

Nashville and Branson are two completely different places and each have
their
strong points and attraction. Branson, for Vegas type shows and lush
seasonal
atmosphere, and Nashville, for the country music 'industry' side. It's like

the old saying: 'that's why we have chocolate and vanilla

(Note to Ralph Benson: what concert did we meet at, Ralph. I'll probably
recall it if you give me a clue!)

Regards,

Fred Vail
Nashville, TN

Editor's note. What a shame what happened to Jimmie Roger's voice.

Bob,
The question by Sulamer22 (Sid) about the grilles that can be swapped into
57 Chevies brought back a lot of memories. I think the best looking was a
'57 Corvette grille. I also remember '57's with 57 Buick grilles, '57
DeSoto, '54 Chevy, '53 Chevy and then there was the old standby. If you
didn't want to use what anybody else had you went to the hardware store,
bought decrotrative stamped aluminum and drawer pulls and fabricated your
own grille. Of course there were straight tubular grilles that I think can
still be purchased from J.C. Whitney. My opinion is still the '57 Corvette
grille (with added teeth of course) is the best looking of them all.

anyone tell me how to make my 55 throw flames;from the pipes like that one

I have found flame throwers as cheap as $75 in hotrodder magazine - they
attache to your exhaust pipes and ignite using spark plugs.

They are pretty cool-

You may want to try doing a search online for flame throwers as well- many
people who are into this end of the hobby have their owns sites with info.

Im sure I will be looking too as my wife wants flame throwers on her 53

Hi!! Bob
Again to you great list, don't know how you find all the time to do it so

right. If you can help with my question or problem I have a 57 Nomad that
I've been restoring for over 14 years just got it on the road a few days
ago
and I'm having a problem when I go to start it. You turn the key and it
will
crank for as long as you'd want if you let it. If you don't turn the key to

off and try to start again it will just crank again if you turn it off then

it might fire and when you let go may keep running and maybe not. You go
from
off to start until it stays running. I've replaced to Ignition switch but
it
is still doing it and doing it more often. Please help as I don't want to
keep replacing thinks that wont fix the problem. Thanks for all the help

New York and moved to Florida a little over a year ago. I'm enjoying
Florida and being able to drive my 57 year round but sure miss my club
members. I've remained a member and of course e-mail and call to stay in

be able to learn, and share, and care about all the great folks who
contribute to this. Keep those Classics rollin.........

Regarding El Morocco
Jerry,
There were quite a few El Moroccos made in '56, '57 & '58. Joe
Hrudka
of Mr. Gasket Co. fame bought the company when it folded in the 60s,
primarily for all of the new original Chevrolet parts they removed (and
saved) form the new cars they converted into El Moroccos. Don't know how
many of them survived, but it is well over the 5 quoted in the article.
There is a '56 convertible in Reno I know of and there are 2 '57
hardtops in southern California somewhere. They both were in the Newport
Beach Concours d'Elegance about 14 years ago. Somewhere I have the
pictures I took, but aren't motivated to dig up anything from 14 years
ago right at the moment. That's 3 I've seen (not in the article) and
there surely must be many more.
Joe Hrudka Jr. might know more and if he agrees, I'll give you his
number. Joe Sr. is quite reclusive.

Hi Sid
In response to your nostalgia custom look for a grill to fit your '55. I
have found by another Bob Ford list member that "Stull Industries"
http://209.1.206.107/stull.htm has grills in their "Classic Series" to fit

'55-'57 chevies such as Chrome Tube, Brushed Billet Aluminum or Polished
Billet Aluminum. You can get the part number from their website then go
into
"Summit Racing" http://www.summitracing.com .I've found that Summit has the

cheapest prices on this product. I have the polished billet aluminum grill
on my '56 and a friend of mine liked mine so much he ordered one for his
'55. The instuctions are a little vague. You will need to drill a few holes

to mount the new assembly, but it sure looks nice on the classics.
Good Luck

Ref the El Morocco -

The article in Super Chevy on the El Morocco was a bit off. Here in AZ a
collector has two of the models for 1957 and has several lines on the
third. They are rare but more for collectors than for drivers. A
restored car should easily fetch over $100,000 but the market is limited
since many would rather drive a Bel Air than store the El Morocco.

A more recent Super Chevy article (98) also featured a collector who had
two of them. My guess is since they were an elite car there are more of
them kept around (percentage wise) than we've lost of the "regular"
tri-fives.

Quite frankly I never expected to see an El Morocco and I've had the
chance to see two side by side.

Bob,

Okay, since we are throwing around all these '50s music curveballs, I have
a
rather serious question for Fred Vail or anybody else who cares to share an

opinion.

Back in the mid 1980s, there was a country music disc jockey in the
Washington, D.C. area who carried on for several months about a personal
crusade of his. He could not figure out why famous 1950s country music
star
Webb Pierce had never been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame?

At the time I was simply convinced that this guy was a 100 per cent USDA
nutcake, however since learning much more about Pierce, have come to wonder

the same thing.

I believe he had an early country music television program and frequently
featured new and upcoming country artists on his show. He apparently
influenced such contemporary country artists as Willie Nelson, Waylon
Jennings, Johnny Cash and others too numerous to mention.

I remember a picture of Pierce that I saw once on the inside aspect of the
Eric Clapton album cover Cocaine. He was wearing "Blues Brothers"
sunglasses
and standing on the diving board of a huge below ground swimming pool
shaped
like a guitar!

I suppose there was "inside baseball" within the country music
establishment
in Nashville in the late '50s and early '60s just as there was within rock
and roll circles during the same period. So I was wondering, from this
august collection of '50s trivia aficionados -- does anybody have any
suggestions?

I really love watching some of those old country television shows with the
goofy dancers, twangy guitars and fiddles and all those "pear shaped
tones."

And who can forget Porter Wagoner on Saturday afternoon after the Wide
World
of Sports went off -- with Miz Dolly featured on a little tune during one
of
the middle segments? Oh, I would still like to get close to that woman's
heart!

Bob,

Delco, aka Delco Electronics, Delco Remy, etc. was spun off by GM as part of

Delphi Automotive Systems. AC Rochester, Harrison Thermal Systems are also

part of Delphi Automotive Systems. All of GM's Automotive Components Group

was combined into Delphi and spun off as a means for GM to get lean and
reduce component costs. Delphi is slowly selling off several of the parts
a
lot of people in the restoration hobby use such as starters, alternators,
HEI
electronics, braking systems, lighting, etc. The idea for GM being to
competitively bid all parts and get lower pricing from suppliers. Since
most
of Delphi's operations in the US are UAW plants, they are at a distinct
cost
disadvantage to companies like Hitachi, Siemans, etc. In the future, the
parts you may be buying most likely won't be US made in the 10 - 15 years,
but sourced to Mexico, Singapore, China and other countries where
engineering
and labor costs are less. Its plain economics.

My guess: Glucose binds water more effectively than sodium
chloride. It serves as a humectant essentially absorbing water before the
salt can cake. Other humectants that can be used are calcium
aluminosilicate (if I remember right). The problem with this one is there
is some concern about aluminium and Alzheimers. Baking powders always have
cornstarch as a water absorbing ingredient to keep the acids and bicarb
from
becoming too wet and the powder releasing its CO2 in the package.

Hi Bob (and all the other list members),

I saw on the last Tri-Five list, you mentioned Tim Allen's 55 Nomad.

The "pole" you're referring was actually a steel beam (if I remember
correctly).

The car they dropped the beam on WAS NOT a Nomad but a 55 2-door wagon.

I taped this episode (I'm sure I still have it), did a re-wind, and a
re-play several times to get a better look at "What" actually got crushed.

Thought you'd like to know?
