Hi Bob.

I still love your list and read it faithfully. Lot's of interesting stuff.

I notice you are not accepting attachments due to the increased chance of
viruses. I am the reader who emailed you some months ago and suggested you
switch to a Mac and run Windows as an emulation as a means of virus
avoidance.
You responded that it sounded worth looking into.

Since our exchange, the numbers and damage potential of Windows and
Microsoft
application viruses has increased dramatically. Mac remains almost
virus-free.
Therefore, I would like to remind you of this means of using the Internet
with far less danger.

It is, of course, important to use only non-Windows (not non-Microsoft)
software in conjunction with the Internet. In other words, you defeat
your
purpose if you browse using the Windows emulation and Windows-based
software.
You can, however, safely browse using Mac versions of Microsoft software.

Don't ask me why this is the case. All I know is, it works. I don't know
any
Windows users who have not caught a virus, except Newbies who don't use the
Internet much. At the same time, I don't know any Mac users who have
caught a
virus.

If avoiding downtime and repairs is important, this is worth considering.

Jan Mowrey

Editor's note. I am not an expert on PC's so what follows is just my
opinion. I
invite others to share their knowledge of the subject and tell me if what I
think is not correct.

A virus is any program that causes something bad to happen to your
computer.
In order for a virus to hurt your computer, you must execute the program.
Text that is
received as e-mail is 7 bit ASCII. Text can not be executed as a program
so text can never harm your
computer.

Only a program that is 8 bit ASCII that you execute can harm your computer.

The normal way a program (possible virus) is sent to anyone is as an
attachment. It is also
possible to download a program from a web site that is a virus. If you
delete all attachments sent
with your e-mail and you never download a program from a web site, you
probably will never have a
virus. It is also possible to copy a program (possible virus) from a
floppy drive or CD ROM to
your had disk. Just copying a program with a virus to your to your hard
drive does not harm
your computer. To cause harm, you must execute the program. However
Windows executes some
programs automatically if they exist so if you copy a program with a virus
that windows
executes automatically, you have caused harm to your computer.

It is not safe to execute an attachment even if you know the person sending
you
e-mail would not send you a virus. This is because some viruses send
themselves to everyone in
your address book without you knowing it. My rule is NEVER execute an
attachment no matter
who has sent it.

A virus on a Mac is unlikely for several reasons. First there are 10 PCs
running Windows for ever Mac. So if you want to cause the maximum about of
damage to PC's you
create a virus for Windows. Another reason is to create a virus, you must
find a weakness in the
operating system. Windows is a much more open operating system that the
system on the
Macs. That means that it is much easier to find information about the
Windows operating
system than the operating system on the Mac.

Converting from a Windows system to a Mac system is a difficult task. Many
of
the commercial software programs are not available on the Mac. Some Macs
can run Windows
programs in an emulation mode. This emulation mode is the source of many
problems for Windows
programs.

In general, if you started using Macs you will usually stay with Macs and
if
you started with PCs running DOS or Widows, you will usually stay with
Windows. It is just too
much a hassle to convert.

Macs are excellent computers and in some industries, they are the standard.

Macs usually do a better jobs with graphics than PCs.

I urge everyone on this list to get virus protection software AND make
frequent
backups of your important data. As you can imagine, I receive a lot of
e-mail and my virus
software flags about 1 virus ever week.

Also make a hard copy (paper) of important documents, lists, and your
e-mail
address book. You should make 2 copies of your backups and store one copy
off site.

I invite you comments on the above.

Like Jan, I have never heard of a Mac virus.

Hey Bob!

The "Wide Track" that Gary Howard is talking about is the 1959 Pontiac.
Talk
about making the most of a slogan...they still use it today to advertise
their
Grand Prix! Also '59 was the first year for the Pontiac split grille. They
dropped it for 1960 but I think it's been a styling theme ever since.

Hi Bob, and everyone else. I'm new to the list, but look forward to being
a
member. I have a couple of questions about my 55 Bel Air HT. First, I
cannot
seem to get the front, passenger-side dash speaker removed. I have removed
the
two lower screws, which released the bottom of the speaker bracket, but it
still feels connected at the top of the bracket. I have looked through
both my
Factory Assembly Manual and my Mechanics Shop Manual, but I do not find
anything on this speaker. I really hate to remove the passenger-side bezel
and
clock, unless there is no other way. Any help??

Secondly, I would like to install seats with integrated seatbelts, or
integrate
some 3-points into a factory-style front bench seat. Anyone tried anything
like this yet? The aftermarket 3-point belts just look like I would have
to
mount the shoulder anchor too low, because of the Hardtop model design.
Once
again, any help or input would be appreciated.

Bob,
I agree with Jeff about Ebay. I have been buying and selling on Ebay for 3
years now. I also noticed that lately, most sellers wait till the buyer
leaves feedback before they leave it for the buyer. Like Jeff said, this is

kind of intimidation by the seller. Even if you are unhappy with the item,
you are afraid to leave negative feedback because the seller will leave you

negative feeback in retaliation. I know, because it has happened to me. I
paid for the item the same day the auction ended with PayPal, but the
seller
wrote in his neutral feedback that I was slow in payment. This came after I

wrote neutral feedback for him charging $4.00 for shipping that cost him
only
34 cents!
I believe that once the seller has received payment, the buyer has
completed his end of the deal. That is when the seller should leave
feedback.
And it should be based soleyon his response time to the seller's emails and

the time period in which the payment is received. Not on what kind of
feedback the buyer leaves the seller.
- Warren

With reference to Gary Howard's question on the "New Widetrack Ride"
vehicle
manufacturer's advertising, GM Pontiac marketing used the term twice.
First
time was for the introduction of the Model Year 1959 Pontiac Bonneville and
the
second time was for the introduction of the Model Year 1997 Pontiac Grand

Bob, I have sold about 5 or 6 items on ebay, only once had a problem

selling. The buyer opted to Buy It Now on a 1994 Chevy truck grille, but I
never heard from him, no not even once. The other sales went smoothly for
the
buyers and I. I also have bought about 20 or more Tonka toys without a
hitch. I also bought about a dozen or so parts for my Harley Davidson
without
a hitch. So overall, my transactions have been very good experiences. These

transactions have been mostly under $200, I would be hesitant to spend much

more than that, though. I have heard from reliable sources that ebay
expects
bidders to bid once and only once on any one item. They say that if ebay
catches a bidder entering several bids to clip the current high bidder by a

small margin, they can actually run that bid up even more to discourage
that
practice. Therefore, I always assess my highest bid carefully and submit
one
or two bids at the most. <Nick> 55 2dr. sedan

Editor's note. Here is a way I have used to buy things on E-bay that I
really
want that seems to work every time. I print out the description of the
item
and when the auction is over. Say it is over a 9AM on the 31st.
I place a bid at 8:55 AM for the item. Sometimes this bid is not large
enough
to be the high bid. I keep increasing my bid until I am the high bidder.
E-bay sends a message to the former high bidder when he/she is outbid. By
the
time they get the e-mail message, it is too late. The bidding is over.

A man left work one Friday afternoon. But being payday, instead of going
home, he stayed out the entire weekend partying with the boys and spending
his entire week's wages. When he finally appeared at home on Sunday night
he was confronted by a very angry wife and was barraged for nearly two
hours with a tirade befitting his actions.

Finally his wife stopped the nagging and simply said to him, "How would
you like it if you didn't see me for two or three days?"

To which he replied, "That would be fine with me."

Monday went by and he didn't see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and
went with the same results. Come Thursday, the swelling went down just
enough where he could see her a little out of the corner of his left eye.

On the past couple of lists you've sent out I see several people have
commented
on Ebay purchases.

I have purchased some Nascar pieces off Ebay with fairly good results.

I ..NEVER.. post feedback about my experience with the Seller UNTIL .... I
receive what I've purchased.

You also asked about the 700R4 overdrive tranny. Can't say about how it'll
react mated with a 283, but my '86 Monte Carlo LS has a factory installed
700R4

Always been a good tranny and decent gas mileage. That is until the time I
let
my girlfriend drive my Monte Carlo and she
scrapped the torqconverter.

Bob,

(This is not meant to be an advertisement for my services. I simply
thought
that I had something to contribute to your list community, so I offer these

remarks. Please do not circulate this portion of the letter -- or if you
have problems with the text please let me know.).

For the past several years (since April. 1998) I have been buying and
selling
items on a commission basis on eBay for a growing number of clients.
During
this time I have made some serious true believers among them -- mostly
vendors of antiques, collectibles, coins, musical instruments and a large
variety of other consumer items.

Last year just before Christmas, I sold a 1994 TREK, by Safari motor home
with a 3.9 liter Isuzu turbo-Diesel engine with 50,000 miles on the
odometer.
This stunning vehicle sold for $30,000. Likewise, I have sold auto parts
and wheels, motorcycles, motorcycle parts, aviation parts and radios and
automotive test equipment on the site. In most instances I was able to
fetch
dollar amounts for this merchandise which far exceeded what people who live

in this geographic area are willing to or able to pay for such commodities.

Although I have listed several classic cars in the past, I have found that
unless they are extremely rare or in pristine condition, they are at best a

very difficult sell. Potential buyers do want to touch, feel, smell and
drive whatever vehicle they might be considering before shelling out huge
amounts of cash for them. Conversely, potential sellers many times ask to
establish unrealistic reserve prices for items they with to sell. In the
instance of the motor home, both the buyer and the seller knew precisely
what they had, and the buyer sent a cashier's check for 1/2 of the total
purchase price before traveling here (southwestern Indiana) from the Kansas

City area. This was after several telephone calls to my client who was
fabulous and very patient throughout the entire ordeal.

As with all commerce in this country and anywhere else in the world (and I
have sold many items overseas) there are going to be some swindling
scumbags
out there whose outrageous behavior will potentially taint the image of
those
who are responsible vendors and first-party sellers. This is not a unique
feature to eBay.

However, having been a party to literally hundreds of transactions both as
a
seller and as a buyer of license plates, auto parts and other collectible
items, I can honestly say that the overwhelming majority of people with
whom
I have done business within the eBay community have been courteous,
punctual
and a total joy to do business with.

One of the outstanding features of Internet sales is the remarkable things
you can learn in the process of listing and selling beautiful items --
factual information, anecdotal stories and accounts, even the date a
certain
item was manufactured if it has a posted serial number which you record in
the listing.

I feel very sorry for the individual who was rooked on a deal gone bad --
perhaps he should consider civil, legal action. This is the one criticism
I
have long held regarding eBay -- they do not stand behind the seller in the

event that a buyer welches on a deal -- and it is virtually impossible to
persuade local law enforcement to investigate instances of Internet fraud.

The feedback system is also imperfect. It is very easy for a fraudulent
seller or buyer to simply cancel his account with eBay on a moments notice
and disappear from cyberspace commerce.

That is not to say that the company is without faults. I have repeatedly
found in the past that executives in the highest levels of eBay pay
absolutely no attention to the suggestions and comments of successful
sellers
or those who have valid criticisms of company policies. Their lack of
marketing and advertising in relatively unimportant markets such as this
region of the country in lieu of foreign investments is also very
troubling.

The media, by latching onto many of the outrageous stories they report,
does
us all a tremendous disservice instead of accurately reflecting what
actually
transpires on the site.

But for those of you who have quality collectibles, classic cars and parts
to
sell, eBay should simply be view as a tool and an alternative to live
auctions, space advertising (one of the reasons newspapers view the site as

such a threat) and other methods of selling commodities. Its at times an
imperfect tool -- but one which works exceptionally well in the
overwhelming
majority of instances.

I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about my personal
experiences.

Bob, you asked about anyone having good or bad buying experience on Ebay.
Well, look at mine.

One guy advertised a '57 Chevy 4 Barrel Air Cleaner' on Ebay with the
bidding
to start at $125. The first problem was it was not a 57. I asked him
several
questions, through Ebay, about the AC and the more he told me, the more I
was
convinced no part of it was a 57. He had one picture of it on Ebay mostly
showing the top which to the best I could see did not have the cutout for
the
radiator hose, the first dead give away. No one bid on the AC. I sent him
a
message through the Ebay ad asking some questions about dimensions, oil
bath
element, more pictures, etc. About the only response I got was that the
snorkel was 7" long. He also confirm that there was on cutout, but he
could
show me how to cut it out. I think this might have been a 56 AC. I made
an
offer and we haggled back and forth until we agreed on a price of $90
'including shipping'. I sent him a personal check which he received
12/10/01.
Two weeks went by and I had heard nothing so I emailed him to see if he got
the
check or what had happened. He said he had got the check but was waiting
for
it to clear. (It doesn't take 2 weeks for checks to clear anymore) He
told
me he did not have anything to pack it in but would get some and ship it
ASAP.
Today is 1/19/02 and I still have no AC. He told me he shipped it USPS
because
it was cheaper than UPS. He did not insure it or anything to track it. It
'apparently' is lost so I asked for my money back and he refused because he
said, "he would be out the money and the AC". I told him I bought an item
from
him and paid for the shipping and got nothing and if that had happened
through
a retailer, they would refund my money. Since this was a 'send a personal
offer' on Ebay, I can not leave 'negative' feedback about the seller
because
there is no record that it sold on Ebay. He has many positive feedbacks,
but
also has 3 negative, one very much like me, shipping problems. I called
the
postal service and since he did not insure the item or ask or delivery
confirmation, there is nothing they can do. I told him this was fraud and
he
acted like I insulted him. Well, I sure would like to.

Any suggestions. I think he lives in CA. Maybe you could go kick him for
me.

Thanks for all the hard work and as always 'GOD is LOVE and even more',
