Bob, I was wondering if anyone on the list has had experience with surface
rust removal on large areas
of car bodies? I've been looking for a 56 2 dr. coupe for a while, and some
of the bodies that don't have
major salt rot, have large areas of surface rust(usually from someone
starting a project by sanding all the
paint off and losing ambition before repainting it). Sandblasting seems
extreme (panel warping,etc) and
acid dipping requires total disassembly. Any info is appreciated.Bruce

Hi Bob, I am writing in response to the fellow who was looking for some
info about heads which used swirl polished valves. I don't know which
other heads used them, but I once owned a set of #3740997 heads and they
had the swirl polished valves on both the intake and exhaust. Those heads
also had dual valve springs. I ran them on a 301 that I had in a '49
Chev business coupe gasser. They were really some great heads. I would
like to find another set now for the 2x4 set up for my '57 Nomad. Thanks
Bob for having such a great list. Leroy

Bob,

For curiosity's sake, what does a driver's side front fender for a '55
Chevy
go for these days? I need the little foot at the bottom in front of the
turn
signals too -- mine is bent on the side.

Does anybody within 200 miles of Evansville, Indiana have one for sale?

If anyone has one email me.

I have a question for you and your readers.

Is there a difference between a 6 and V8 Powerglide in 1955 and 1956?

If there is, how can you tell them apart?

I would appreciate any information that you can supply.

Thanks Tony

I believe that standard trans cars had solid lifters and automatics had
hydraulics in '55.

Well, I feel like an idiot. I posted regarding the removal of the horn cap
on a '55, as the factory assembly manual did not illustrate the procedure.
After looking through the assembly manual again last night, I shout to my
wife "I'm a total dumb-ass" (I made note that she did not disagree). Of
course, the only screw/bolt that can be seen on an assembled steering wheel
(backside) was the one that I need to remove. The illustration in the
assembly manual shows it plain as day, so I don't know how I missed it. Of
course, I had sent in my question to the list earlier in the day. If you
read it, please disregard, as it is now obvious what i am supposed to do.
I guess this is the only down side to a list like this. Some people (like
myself) rely on the list without exercising a little more common sense. Oh
well, I'll be careful in the future. And thanks to everyone who responded
to my question about the dash speaker removal. Each response provided an
additional small bit of info. that, combined with all !
of the other responses, makes the job crystal clear. Got to love the
list!!

Bob - all 55's with powerglide had hydraulic lifters - most sticks
(includng O/D) had solid lifters. Near the end of production of 55's,
hydraulic lifters were installed in stick shift models. My 195 HP
DelRay was built in late April 1955 and was a solid lifter car. After
1955, only those with the Duntov type camshafts were solids (not sure
about 225 HP dual quad '56's)

In response to Nomadman's email, this is also a true story! My wife &
daughter were downtown shopping a couple years ago in my wife's 84 maroon
Subaru wagon. My daughter dropped off my wife on our main street in town
just
so she can pick something up & said: I'll drive around the block(since
there
was no place to park) & pick you up in a few minutes right HERE! Well my
wife quickly got what she was after & was soon outside standing in the
middle
of the block waiting for about 5 minutes, then finally the maroon Subaru
stopped behind other cars which were stopped at the red light, & right
where
my wife was standing, so my wife steps off the curb & into the car & while
shutting the door & without looking at my daughter, says very abruptly:
What
the heck took you so long? Then my wife turned to look at her & it WASN'T
my
daughter! It was another elderly lady!!!!! I think they BOTH almost had a
heart attack!!!!!!!!!

Richard
(oh, my wife DID apologize & explained; WRONG SUBARU, as she got out)
She
told me it was exactly like ours!!!!!! Talk about embarrassment!
WHEW!!!!!!!

BOB, AS USUAL, YOU PROVIDE WONDERFUL INFORMATION. I DON'T KNOW HOW FAR YOU

WANT TO PURSUE THIS ISSUE ABOUT COMPUTER VIRUSES, BUT, SINCE ALL READERS OF

YOUR LIST ARE, BY NECESSITY, COMPUTER USERS, IT MAY BE OF INTEREST. I HAVE
A
COUPLE OF POINTS TO ADD AND AM TYPING IN CAPS TO DIFFERENTIATE MY TEXT FROM

YOURS. IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO USE THIS LETTER IN YOUR LIST, I WILL
UNDERSTAND.
I USE AND APPRECIATE BOTH PLATFORMS BUT, AS A GRAPHIC ARTIST, MAC IS MORE
IMPORTANT TO ME.

<< Converting from a Windows system to a Mac system is a difficult task.

IT IS ACTUALLY VERY EASY TO CONVERT FROM WINDOWS TO MAC BECAUSE MODERN MACS

CAN OPEN AND READ WINDOWS DATA. MOST IMPORTANT PROGRAMS ARE DUAL PLATFORM
AND THE DATA IS SIMPLY TRANSFERRED FROM THE PC TO THE DUPLICATE APPLICATION

ON THE MAC. THIS MAY INVOLVE SOME EXPENSE IN BUYING MAC VERSIONS OF
SOFTWARE
NEEDED. THE TRANSFER IS AS EASY AS COPYING THE DATA TO DISK AND THEN
DOWNLOADING TO THE MAC.

MOST PEOPLE ARE AFRAID TO LEARN A NEW OS AND THINK THE MAC WILL BE
COMPLICATED. THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT WINDOWS IS A PC DUPLICATE (ALMOST)
OF
THE MAC OS. ANYONE WHO CAN RUN WINDOWS CAN RUN MAC. THE DIFFERENCES ARE
INSIGNIFICANT AND TAKE ONLY A SHORT TIME TO LEARN. I AM SPEAKING OF MAC
OS
9 AND PRIOR. MAC OS X IS A WHOLE NEW BALL GAME.

Many of the commercial software programs are not available on the Mac.

THIS IS TRUE.

Some Macs can run Windows
programs in an emulation mode. This emulation mode is the source of many
problems for Windows
programs.

SO FAR, I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS RUNNING WINDOWS SOFTWARE ON WINDOWS ON MY
MAC.
IT'S IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT THE WINDOWS OS IS THE REAL THING. WHAT IS

EMULATED IS THE PENTIUM CHIP. THE EMULATOR TRICKS WINDOWS INTO THINKING IT

IS RUNNING ON A PENTIUM. WINDOWS USUALLY NEVER FIGURES OUT IT IS REALLY
RUNNING ON A G3 OR G4 CHIP. THERE IS, HOWEVER, A REDUCTION IN SPEED. THIS

IS USUALLY NOT A PROBLEM UNLESS ONE IS RUNNING A SPEED-CRITICAL PROGRAM
SUCH
AS HIGH-SPEED GAMES OR CAD PROGRAMS WHERE A LOT OF RENDERING IS ESSENTIAL.
I
SUPPOSE THERE ARE SOME PROGRAMS THAT DON'T RUN WELL BUT I HAVE NOT
ENCOUNTERED THEM YET.

IT IS CRITICAL TO HAVE A FAST MAC WITH A LOT OF RAM AND HARD DISK SPACE.
IT
IS LIKE HAVING TWO COMPUTERS IN THE SAME BOX. THEY HAVE TO SHARE THE
RESOURCES SO THE RESOURCES MUST BE ADEQUATE.

ACTUALLY, THE WAY IT WORKS IS NEAT! THE TWO OS'S CAN BE TOGGLED BACK AND
FORTH SO ONE CAN WORK WITH MAC PROGRAMS AND WINDOWS PROGRAMS AT THE SAME
TIME. I HAVE DONE THIS AND IT WORKS FLAWLESSLY...SO FAR. I CAN CREATE A
DOCUMENT IN A MAC PROGRAM, MOVE IT TO A WINDOWS PROGRAM FOR FURTHER
CHANGES,
AND MOVE IT BACK TO MAC FOR PRINTING OR BURNING TO A CD.

In general, if you started using Macs you will usually stay with Macs and
if
you started with PCs running DOS or Widows, you will usually stay with
Windows. It is just too
much a hassle to convert.

THIS IS TRUE. AND I KNOW IT'S A HASSLE TO GO FROM MAC TO WINDOWS, BUT
AGAIN,
I SAY IT IS GENERALLY VERY EASY TO GO FROM WINDOWS TO MAC. I NEVER HAVE
TROUBLE INSTALLING WINDOWS PROGRAMS OR USING WINDOWS DATA.

Macs are excellent computers and in some industries, they are the standard.
Macs usually do a better jobs with graphics than PCs.

MUSIC TOO.

I urge everyone on this list to get virus protection software AND make

frequent backups of your important data. As you can imagine, I receive a
lot of
e-mail and my virus software flags about 1 virus ever week.

I HAVE VIRUS SOFTWARE INSTALLED ON MY MAC...JUST IN CASE.

Also make a hard copy (paper) of important documents, lists, and your
e-mail address book. You should make 2 copies of your backups and store one
copy
off site.

I BACK UP MY ENTIRE HARD DRIVE TO AN EXTERNAL DRIVE AT LEAST MONTHLY. MORE

OFTEN IF I HAVE NEW CRITICAL DATA. I ALSO MAKE CD COPIES OF DATA AND THE
SYSTEM FOLDER AS OFTEN AS I HAVE NEW DATA TO PRESERVE.

I invite you comments on the above.
Like Jan, I have never heard of a Mac virus. >>

ACTUALLY THERE ARE SEVERAL HUNDRED MAC VIRUSES. MOST ARE VERY OLD AND
HARMLESS. A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, ONE RESURFACED, THE ONLY "DANGEROUS" ONE
THAT I KNOW OF; IT CAUSES THE MAC TO RESTART ITSELF, WHICH IS ANNOYING.
THE
PROTECTION FOR THIS VIRUS IS TO TURN OFF THE "AUTO-START" CONTROL IN THE
CONTROL PANEL.

ALTHOUGH THERE ARE MAC VIRUSES, I DON'T KNOW, PERSONALLY, OF ANY MAC USERS
WHO HAVE GOTTEN ONE. MOST MAC VIRUSES HAVE FADED AWAY.

THERE WAS A "MAC VERSION" OF THE MELISSA VIRUS THAT MADE THE ROUNDS. IT
REQUIRED THE MAC USER TO READ AND OBEY A LONG LIST OF INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW
TO
INSTALL AND ACTIVATE THE VIRUS. THIS WAS, OF COURSE, A JOKE.

ANYONE WHO HAS NO NEED FOR THE USES THAT MAC EXCELS AT, OR WHO IS NOT
CONCERNED ABOUT VIRUSES, HAS NO NEED TO CHANGE. SOMEONE WHO HAS BECOME
FRUSTRATED WITH THE LACK OF SECURITY IN WINDOWS, WITH THE INTRUSIVENESS OF
MICROSOFT, OR WHO SPECIALIZES IN GRAPHICS AND MUSIC SHOULD INVESTIGATE THE
MAC.

THANKS FOR LETTING ME HAVE A SAY.

JAN MOWREY

Editor's note. Great post Jan. Thanks for sending it in. My guess is that
the Mac versus Windows discussion will go on forever.

I will try to keep my posts down to one a day, but as a guy who is new to
the 55, I encounter things on a nightly basis that leave me with questions.
So, for today's edition, I would like to ask about the removal of the horn
cap on the steering wheel of the Bel Air HT model. Assembly Manual diagram
looks like there are no actual screws, etc. attaching the horn cap, but it
did not feel like it wanted to come loose when I started pulling. I have
been known to over-tighten bolts and pull too hard on things to remove
them, so I just wanted to check with somebody before I pulled hard enough
to break something.

Also, just wanted to thank Todd Campbell for his response to me speaker
removal question. The advice sounds like it will make the job easier...
and result in less broken parts. Thanks Todd.

gator,

(by the way you wouldnt happen to live down south? maybe in florida? ;) ;)

have you tried UPS?
a one-piece bumper is exactly within their limits for size.
wrap up the sharp points well and perhaps even the whole thing with
wrapping paper and tape. i have shipped 2 this way. tell them it is an
'automomotive part' not a car bumper. or say it's a bent piece of steel.

instead of bringing it to a UPS office simply have the driver pick it up.
call UPS and tell them the dimensions and weight and pay for it using a
credit card or give the check to the driver. that way when the driver
picks it up he knows everything is ok. he has a little computer printed
sticker. if you go to an official UPS place they might look at everything
too closely and start to poke around and examine the packaging and all
sorts of nonsense. you might get some pain-in-the-ass clerk who has an
attitude or gets frightened by large irregular shaped packages. if you go
to a mailbox usa or other storefront place they might get scared! either
place might even send you away and have to haul the bumper all the way
home again. as for me, the less i deal with clerks the happier i am. life
is too short. mail and phone is the best. :)

note that the dimensions of the bumper are exactly within their limits.
one more inch and it would be beyond limits. so simply report the length
at exactly their limit of, i think, 60 inches. if it happens to be 62
inches with packaging or whatever dont worry about it. there is always
some leeway.

by the way if you ship to a 'business' (wink wink) rates are cheaper.
for example, if you ship something to Joe Blow that's a residence. but if
you ship it to 'joe blow corporation' it's now magically a business!
you now qualify for the lower rate! funny how one simple word can often
make a big difference.

now, i'm not saying anyone should do this. this is just something that i
have often thought of when shipping a package however somehow i have
managed to resist the temptation of saving money! no sir! on boy scouts
honor!

bob,

i wouldnt pay much, if any attention to the below of a MAC user.
MAC computers and apple co. have always had a cult-like following. there
is this feeling of coolness and hipness that people seem to associate with
MAC's. that has to be one of the most successful marketing and P.R. jobs
ever by a company.

think of it this way - suppose you were a guy who created viruses to harm
computers. surely you would not ignore so many millions of computers and
simply write a virus program for MAC's. there are viruses that affect any
type of computer. you can buy anti-virus programs for MAC's.
MAC's have no inherent protection against viruses.

although i think MAC's tend to have more granola bar crumbs in their
keyboards. ;) MAC users tend to like that stuff. also health foods, yoga,
hate meat, hunting, guns, drive non-u.s.-made cars, etc. :)

suppose you were shopping for a PC. you see 2 on a shelf and both do the
same things. features are equivalent. one costs about double the price of
the other. which would you buy? if you chose the less expensive one -
congratulations! you'd be an owner of an IBM compatible windows-based
system. one that has many more parts, software and gadgets available and
easier to upgrade.

it's very cheap to buy a 17 inch monitor for a window's PC. try getting
one for a MAC! the cost is sky high.

I have only been using e-Bay for a few months but I
have made a number of purchases through them. In all
but one I was satisfied with the results. The "bad"
deal was my fault; I failed to read the description
enough and ended up with a product that was almost
useless at a cost of over $10.oo with shipping and
handling. The seller did offer to buy it back at 100%,
however, I felt it was my error, and she was honest
about the mess.
What I am amazed at is how high some of the stuff
sells for. I stop short of catalog prices but often
see items sell higher than you can buy it from almost
any rebuilders catalog. I am building a resource list
for restoration on a 57 BA rag top; any and all
sources are a blessing. I have had some excelent

With the super bowl coming up soon I thought you might enjoy the below.

Bob received a free ticket to the Superbowl from his company.
Unfortunately, when Bob arrived at the stadium he realized the
seat was in the last row in the corner of the stadium. He was closer
to
the Goodyear Blimp than the field! About halfway through the first
quarter,
Bob noticed an empty seat 10 rows off the field right on the 50-yard
line. He
decided to take a chance and made his way through the stadium and around
the
security guards to the empty seat. As he sat down, he asked the
gentleman
sitting next to him, "Excuse me, is anyone sitting here?" The man said
"No."
Very excited to be in such a great seat for the game, Bob said to the
man
next to him, "This is incredible! Who in their right mind would have a
seat like this at the Superbowl and not use it?!" The man replied,
"Well,
actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my
wife, but
she passed away. This is the first Superbowl we haven't been to together
since we got married in 1967." "That's really sad," said Bob, "But still ,
couldn't you find
someone to take the seat? A relative or a close friend?" "No," the
man replied,
"They're all at the funeral.
