Regarding my question as to a current vendor for the coveted Port-o-walls,
Lucas, in Long Beach California has them for $29, call them at
800.952.4333. I have heard all sorts of pro's and cons as to success with
radials, I'll try them and give a report. Also, from what I understand the
Dunlap Sport A-2 is reported to be a fantastic value in a radial tire...

I just bought a speedometer cable w/casing from Danchuk, and read a few
things that made me question if it would work with my application. I have
a 454 and TH400 in my '55. I know I should have checked before I ordered,
but it did not occur to me (I can hear you saying 'rookie' as you shake
your head and sigh). Can anyone help me out on this question. I hate to
open the package to try it, and then find out that it might not work. Few
things make me more angry than wasting my money because of my own
ignorance. Need help from someone with experience.

Need a little help on a 3-point seat belt idea for my '55. Remember those
late 60's and early 70's shoulder belt options? You know, the ones that
anchored at the back of the roof and ran forward above the windows. You
had to take the belt out of the loops to use it, and then fold it back up
into the loops to store it. Well, after seeing how expensive modern seats
with integrated seatbelts are, and realizing that even after modifications
I still would not have anything that resembled an original bench (got to
have that roll and pleat bench), I remembered this old set-up. Anyone done
this, or know of problems that I might encounter as far as mounting them on
the roof? And, most importantly, anyone know where I could get some,
besides the salvage yard? Any comments, ideas, support, or even reasons
not to do this would be greatly appreciated.

<< My guess is that the Mac versus Windows discussion will go on forever.
>>

Absolutely true, unfortunately. A little like the debate in our area about

the value of learning Spanish, having Spanish ballets, etc. An endless
debate. The best course would be to learn both languages. We are very
monocentric in the US. We learn one language or one computer platform and
then refuse to consider the value of any other.

Since this is a Chevy newsletter, however, I will cease sending
computer-related posts and continue to enjoy the wealth of Chevy info your
newsletter provides. Thanks so much for making this newsletter available.

Bob, first and foremost... thanks for taking the time to do this list!
It is a real blessing to all of us!

For Louis; As a Graphic Artist I am trained on Mac's. Going to school for
the Adobe Illustrator 9 package, the school had IBM/clones and Mac's.
My observation is that the Mac's made it easier to do graphic artwork than
IBM/clones. It's true Mac/Apple lost a lot of customers with their
exclusive attitude,
but in the computer graphic world, the Mac is a standard fixture.
However, I look at Mac vs. IBM/clones, the same way I look at Ford/Chevy...
and I ask you; You can get a 55 Ford cheaper than a 55 Chevy; does that
make the Ford a
better buy? As a Chevy man for MANY years, I'd say no, but a Ford
enthusiast would see
it differently. Thanks for letting me stand on my "soapbox"!

Bob: This is for Tony who asked if 6 and 8 cylinder Power glides differ?
Yes they do. The 6 cylinder has a square bolt pattern across the top of
the bell housing where as the V8 is rounded. This is in the area where
the transmission mates to the motor. Also on a V8 you must use an adapter
plate in order to mount the starter. Look forward to your list. Mine
comes in to my Bulk Mail and I know right away I have something I want to
read. Keep up the good job. Dick Burrows

Hi Bob--
Love the list. This is for Bruce regarding removing surface rust. Having
been restoring my 56 for the last few years, I have tried and investigated
all the paint and rust removal methods since I had to strip an entire car.
I found that a dual action sander works the best. I used it on mine and
it
came out looking so good I was tempted to clear-coat the silver bullet
right
there. Looked kind of Delorean-ish if you know what I mean. It's not hard
to
do and you can do it at home when the feeling moves you. After sanding,
apply any kind of metal conditioner or metal etch that leaves a phosphate
coating. It's a clear liquid you can get at a body supply shop that you
essentially spray or wipe on and then rinse off with a damp rag. This will
hold each surface you do for a while until you are ready to apply Epoxy
Primer to a large enough area to make it worth it to mix it up. If it's
taking a while, you can reapply the metal etch as necessary to keep any
rust
in check that may start. Good Luck.

dr. hdtp. Black, I think! His name is Henry DeWitt & the last known
address
I had for him was 628 Broad St. Portsmouth, N. H. (03801) Never had his
phone #. Any info on him would be greatly appreciated. He is a Convention
friend, who suddenly quit coming to conventions & CCI has no forwarding
address. I sent him a Christmas card to that address in 1997 & it came
back!
Thanks in advance for any info. Richard

Bob,
I know what Louis is talking about when it comes to 'pain in the ***' UPS
clerks. I used to bring packages to the local UPS drop off and every time I

did, this one woman would give me a hard time about the packing. She would
even open some packages to 'inspect the packing'.

One

time I was shipping a set of side glass for a 55' 2dr sedan that I had
bought
from someone, but never used it. I was shipping it in the same box and
still
wrapped in the same bubble wrap that I had received it in. And yes, it was
delivered to me by UPS. But, she would not accept it. She said there needed

to be 4" of wrap around all sides of the glass (there was at least 3.75").
I
explained to her that this was the way I received it and even showed her
the
old UPS label. But, she still refused to take it. That was the last straw
for
me. Now I use USPS or FedEx ground for all my shipping.

Hi Bob, in 1962 my father had purchased a 1959 Nomad brown and cream
wagon even then it was an unusual car, one day while my Dad stopped at
the local market (My mother and I stayed in the car) another brown and
cream 1959 nomad pulled in and you guessed my dad went right up to it
and open the door, well its a small town but two 1959 nomads! and the
look on his face when we finally got his attention from across the store
parking lot!

Bob

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your list probably saved my marriage. My
husband and I run
a small business. We keep all of our books and records on our computer. I
took your advice and
installed Norton Anti Virus on the computer. Much to my surprise, when I
ran the anti virus
program, it found 5 viruses on our computer. I was shocked to say the
least. I copied down the
names of the viruses that Norton discovered and called my computer guy. He
told me any one of
them would have caused me to loose all of my data. That would have been a
disaster for our
small business as I had not made good backups.

Thanks for your advice on viruses and thanks to Jan for bringing up the
subject.

Hi Bob and every one. Nice day here in Iowa, 63 degrees for January isnt to
tacky. I want to thank every one who responded for my question about
cutting down a steering column for a 57 using a 605 box. Some of you people
should work as tech reps for CCI as they could not get me the correct info.
I ruined one column and was able to find another one close by. One more
question I have is, last year some one posted the widths of rear end swaps
for the 57s and I didn't save that info. What I want is a rear that is
about 1 inch shorter than the 57. I found a complete 12 bolt that was
fresh with 3:50 gears and he also had 3:70 gears that went with it. It was
out of a 70 Nova, but the width was about 3\4 of a inch wider than the 57.
Anybody with any correct info on rear swaps, let me know. Roger in Iowa

To Carl and Sandy regarding original headlights. 1955 headlights have a
12v
in a rectangle in the center of the bulb. 1956 and 1957 headlights were
T3,
but each year was different. The T3 appeared in a triangle in the center
of
the bulb. The triangle had a gravel background as opposed to later models
with lines. SEALED BEAM is in larger letters on the 1956 than on the 1957.

Headlights were made by GE, Sylvania, and Westinghouse, but the only ones
considered original equipment were made by GUIDE. Happy hunting!

Does anyone know where we may get the chrome strips that go around the
