To Marc Glassoff you're right about not getting all of the old oil out of
your engine, What remains is about 3/4 qt. (+). I have proven this many
times
on many different types of engines. The way to find out is at the end of
your
oil drain, when only drips, with plug and oil filter are still removed, use
regulated air pressure set @ 30 psi, into the center of the oil filter
mounting hole, the one that has a threaded nipple, and block the hole
located
to side of center but still inside the filter mounting area, put a quart
container under the drain hole and blow air until it is back to just a
drip.
It absolutely helps to drain your old oil when it is at engine operating
temperature since it is at a lighter viscosity and will drain more
completely. I use a flush that thins the oil just before draining, and the
result of the amount of residual oil (following the above procedure) is
much
less.

After reading all the articles on this oil change controversy, and myself
needing to attempt this complicated chore, I have to tell all of you, I had
a hard time getting to sleep last night. I just kept thinking of all the
little places that dirty oil would cling to or pool, like those little low
points near the rocker arms and who knows how much was still sticking to
the interior walls of the lower engine itself not to mention wondering if
any was still hiding somewhere in the pan as well. Hot or cold I knew I
might not get it all.
Well, I'm not the sort of guy to let that go, I decided that I was going to
get it all out and do a proper oil change for once in my life.
Now I usually have great success cleaning my hands with warm water and dish
detergent though the little woman gives me major grief for the condition of
her sink thereafter, but then what's she got to do that's more important
than keeping the house clean anyway, except maybe getting me a cold
beverage but that's another subject altogether...
So after draining the oil, (the engine was hot), I replaced it with a
solution of 4.75 gallons of hot water plus .25 gallons of Lux Liquid. I
then hooked up a hose to the hot water heater and washed the engine
compartment and car so as to maintain the warmth and cleanability of
everything concerned. Luckily I have a very bumpy alley just a half mile
away and drove the car though it a number of times to get a good agitation
going in the engine compartment. By the third time down the alley a lot of
folks were standing waving their arms and shouting their approvals of my
innovative solution but I couldn't quite get what they were saying as my
engine seemed to be making an awful lot of noise. I didn't stop to chat
with any of them, I was in the middle of an oil change.
Back home, pulling into the car port, copious amounts of soap suds were
gurgling out of the breather tube, it was grey with oil so I knew my plan
had worked. I took the hose, which was still attached to the water heater,
inserted it in the valve cover and after removing the drain plug, flushed
the system of all residue. Now here's where most guys make the mistake,
they immediately add new oil. No way! The smart move is you let it all dry
overnight and then replace your oil the next morning.
So, I can tell all of you and you too Bob, that I'll sleep well tonight, I
know I got ever bit of that dirty oil out! Tomorrow morning I will drive
away with pride knowing there is absolutely nothing but clean pure American
crude running in my crankcase, heck, I might just go back to that alley and
visit. Till next time!

Rick,
You asked about the Pomona Swapmeet, in Southern California. The Pomona
Swapmeet folks have a website at http://www.pomonaswapmeet.com. They have
all the dates posted there, along with just about everything else you need
to know. There's only one thing they don't tell you. If you're looking
for specific rare parts (the nice stuff) be outside the vendor entrance
REAL early (like about 4AM) and look through the trailers of the people
arriving to sell something. If you see what you want work something out
with the guy right on the spot. If you don't, you may see the same item
later on (for more money) because somebody else DID. Several times I've
seen an item bought early in the day get resold later in the day by someone
else!
Since you mentioned that you're looking for a car, I advise you to bring a
pocket magnet. Check out any potential purchase for Bondo repairs (the
magnet won't stick to Bondo). You'll find lots of honest sellers there,
but you may see a few others, too.
Oh yeah, wear comfortable shoes. That place is huge!

Now a tip for all you 1956 Chevrolet owners. I have been restoring and
selling 56 tail lights for 15 years. I painted the black lines in by hand
using a lighted magnifying glass and a brush. It was very time consuming
and the paint just didn't look professional. Then one day I got the idea of
injecting the paint into the small rectangles with a syringe. I
experimented with lots of primers and paints before I found the right
combination. I lay the tail light on some news paper and prop it up so it
is laying flat. I mix up an epoxy primer that just happens to be semi
gloss black and is a very close match to the original color. The epoxy
primer is PPG DP90LF and mixed with PPG DP 402LF Catalyst on a 1.5 parts
color to 1 part catalyst. This mix makes the primer a little thinner so it
will flow through the syringe easier. The 2 to 1 mix is a little thick.
Once the primer is in the syringe I inject it into the tail light
rectangles one drop at a time until the rectangle bottom is covered with
the black primer. It takes three or four drops to cover each rectangle and
you can paint both tail lights in less than 30 minutes. Let the primer
dry over night and you are ready to re-install the tail lights on your
classic, make sure you use a new tail light to body seal and you will love
the new original look. Enjoy.
P.S. If this is too much work I do have original restored tail lights
available.

Editor's note. When I first started restoring my 57 210 wagon, like most
other people I had a lot or questions that I needed answers for. I knew
there were a lot of good people in the hobby that would provide these
answers if I could come up with a way all of us could communicate. In my
younger days I had a lot of experience with computers so I thought if I
could use the Internet to make this communication possible, everyone would
benefit. So I started this list with just a few friends in the hobby and
it just grew to where now it has over 4000 members. If the membership
continues to go up at the rate it has for the last year, I will have to put
a cap on the membership and not accept any more members.
I am retired sort of. I don't get a paycheck anymore. Several years ago,
my wife and I started a small secondary mortgage banking business. I saw
that California real estate was on an upward trend and would probably stay
that way for many years. This would provide an opportunity for us to grow
the business. I was lucky to have started the business at the right time.
Our business grew and grew until now it is a very large business. If you
want to know about how I made this business grow, read the "Rich Dad Poor
Dad Guide to Real Estate Investing". I could have written that book
because I have done everything it said to do AND MORE. I recommend all of
the "Rich Dad Poor Dad" books (I think there are 5) for anyone interested
in financial security. If any list member has read any of these books I
invite your comments. I won't put these comments out on the list.

Bob, thanks for discouraging the use of pyramid
schemes. I know you agree: There's really no easy way
to get rich. It doesn't matter if you are
self-employed or work for someone else, the only way
you'll ever set yourself up is to take what little you
have left over at the end of the month and INVEST. It
is hard to put off today's pleasures for those in the
future, but if you can, you will be richly rewarded.
Yes, this has very little to do with Tri-5s, but thank
you, Bob, for not only sharing your great wisdom, but
for hosting a place where those of us with a common
interest can also help each other better themselves.

I had a bet with a buddy that there was/is a town called Truth or

I know that there are probably a lot of members on your list that do not
know about the latest anti-car hobby legislation pending in the US Senate.
This legislation would give federal funds to all states to enact scrappage
laws. I know that several states have already enacted similar laws but
they're being fought by SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Marketing
Association.
I urge all your list members to go to www.enjoythedrive.com and enroll
to receive the SEMA newsletter. There's no charge for this service, (Just
like the Bob Ford list!), and they will get updates via e-mail and/or US
mail on all pending anti-car legislation whether federal, state or local.
SEMA also provides lists of names and addresses of all US and state
representatives for you to send your protests to. I, for one, am sick and
tired of the government trying to legislate us out of our hobby! I know
that one state with the most anti-hobby laws is California, where I think
probably half of the readers of this list reside. This type of legislation
has become more than a local nuisance now, it's nationwide! Let's show our
elected officials that our hobby is one that contributes to our communities
and hundreds of charities and is not responsible for the poor air quality
that all old cars are being accused of. The fact is, most vintage cars are
in better shape than many of the newer ones. That, combined with the fact
that most collector cars are not driven all the time, precludes their being
much of a source of air pollution.
One other small point. Show me an elected official that doesn't like
riding in a vintage car in a parade! That's fine, just let them know that
there won't be any rides for people who vote against the car hobby! Thanks

To Marc Glassoff you're right about not getting all of the old oil out of
your engine, What remains is about 3/4 qt. (+). I have proven this many
times
on many different types of engines. The way to find out is at the end of
your
oil drain, when only drips, with plug and oil filter are still removed, use
regulated air pressure set @ 30 psi, into the center of the oil filter
mounting hole, the one that has a threaded nipple, and block the hole
located
to side of center but still inside the filter mounting area, put a quart
container under the drain hole and blow air until it is back to just a
drip.
It absolutely helps to drain your old oil when it is at engine operating
temperature since it is at a lighter viscosity and will drain more
completely. I use a flush that thins the oil just before draining, and the
result of the amount of residual oil (following the above procedure) is
much
less.

After reading all the articles on this oil change controversy, and myself
needing to attempt this complicated chore, I have to tell all of you, I had
a hard time getting to sleep last night. I just kept thinking of all the
little places that dirty oil would cling to or pool, like those little low
points near the rocker arms and who knows how much was still sticking to
the interior walls of the lower engine itself not to mention wondering if
any was still hiding somewhere in the pan as well. Hot or cold I knew I
might not get it all.
Well, I'm not the sort of guy to let that go, I decided that I was going to
get it all out and do a proper oil change for once in my life.
Now I usually have great success cleaning my hands with warm water and dish
detergent though the little woman gives me major grief for the condition of
her sink thereafter, but then what's she got to do that's more important
than keeping the house clean anyway, except maybe getting me a cold
beverage but that's another subject altogether...
So after draining the oil, (the engine was hot), I replaced it with a
solution of 4.75 gallons of hot water plus .25 gallons of Lux Liquid. I
then hooked up a hose to the hot water heater and washed the engine
compartment and car so as to maintain the warmth and cleanability of
everything concerned. Luckily I have a very bumpy alley just a half mile
away and drove the car though it a number of times to get a good agitation
going in the engine compartment. By the third time down the alley a lot of
folks were standing waving their arms and shouting their approvals of my
innovative solution but I couldn't quite get what they were saying as my
engine seemed to be making an awful lot of noise. I didn't stop to chat
with any of them, I was in the middle of an oil change.
Back home, pulling into the car port, copious amounts of soap suds were
gurgling out of the breather tube, it was grey with oil so I knew my plan
had worked. I took the hose, which was still attached to the water heater,
inserted it in the valve cover and after removing the drain plug, flushed
the system of all residue. Now here's where most guys make the mistake,
they immediately add new oil. No way! The smart move is you let it all dry
overnight and then replace your oil the next morning.
So, I can tell all of you and you too Bob, that I'll sleep well tonight, I
know I got ever bit of that dirty oil out! Tomorrow morning I will drive
away with pride knowing there is absolutely nothing but clean pure American
crude running in my crankcase, heck, I might just go back to that alley and
visit. Till next time!

You asked about the Pomona Swapmeet, in Southern California. The Pomona
Swapmeet folks have a website at http://www.pomonaswapmeet.com. They have
all the dates posted there, along with just about everything else you need
to know. There's only one thing they don't tell you. If you're looking
for specific rare parts (the nice stuff) be outside the vendor entrance
REAL early (like about 4AM) and look through the trailers of the people
arriving to sell something. If you see what you want work something out
with the guy right on the spot. If you don't, you may see the same item
later on (for more money) because somebody else DID. Several times I've
seen an item bought early in the day get resold later in the day by someone
else!
Since you mentioned that you're looking for a car, I advise you to bring a
pocket magnet. Check out any potential purchase for Bondo repairs (the
magnet won't stick to Bondo). You'll find lots of honest sellers there,
but you may see a few others, too.
Oh yeah, wear comfortable shoes. That place is huge!

Now a tip for all you 1956 Chevrolet owners. I have been restoring and
selling 56 tail lights for 15 years. I painted the black lines in by hand
using a lighted magnifying glass and a brush. It was very time consuming
and the paint just didn't look professional. Then one day I got the idea of
injecting the paint into the small rectangles with a syringe. I
experimented with lots of primers and paints before I found the right
combination. I lay the tail light on some news paper and prop it up so it
is laying flat. I mix up an epoxy primer that just happens to be semi
gloss black and is a very close match to the original color. The epoxy
primer is PPG DP90LF and mixed with PPG DP 402LF Catalyst on a 1.5 parts
color to 1 part catalyst. This mix makes the primer a little thinner so it
will flow through the syringe easier. The 2 to 1 mix is a little thick.
Once the primer is in the syringe I inject it into the tail light
rectangles one drop at a time until the rectangle bottom is covered with
the black primer. It takes three or four drops to cover each rectangle and
you can paint both tail lights in less than 30 minutes. Let the primer
dry over night and you are ready to re-install the tail lights on your
classic, make sure you use a new tail light to body seal and you will love
the new original look. Enjoy.
P.S. If this is too much work I do have original restored tail lights
available.

Editor's note. When I first started restoring my 57 210 wagon, like most
other people I had a lot or questions that I needed answers for. I knew
there were a lot of good people in the hobby that would provide these
answers if I could come up with a way all of us could communicate. In my
younger days I had a lot of experience with computers so I thought if I
could use the Internet to make this communication possible, everyone would
benefit. So I started this list with just a few friends in the hobby and
it just grew to where now it has over 4000 members. If the membership
continues to go up at the rate it has for the last year, I will have to put
a cap on the membership and not accept any more members.
I am retired sort of. I don't get a paycheck anymore. Several years ago,
my wife and I started a small secondary mortgage banking business. I saw
that California real estate was on an upward trend and would probably stay
that way for many years. This would provide an opportunity for us to grow
the business. I was lucky to have started the business at the right time.
Our business grew and grew until now it is a very large business. If you
want to know about how I made this business grow, read the "Rich Dad Poor
Dad Guide to Real Estate Investing". I could have written that book
because I have done everything it said to do AND MORE. I recommend all of
the "Rich Dad Poor Dad" books (I think there are 5) for anyone interested
in financial security. If any list member has read any of these books I

Bob, thanks for discouraging the use of pyramid
schemes. I know you agree: There's really no easy way
to get rich. It doesn't matter if you are
self-employed or work for someone else, the only way
you'll ever set yourself up is to take what little you
have left over at the end of the month and INVEST. It
is hard to put off today's pleasures for those in the
future, but if you can, you will be richly rewarded.
Yes, this has very little to do with Tri-5s, but thank
you, Bob, for not only sharing your great wisdom, but
for hosting a place where those of us with a common
interest can also help each other better themselves.

I drove down highway 180 from Arizona on my way to Truth or Consequences.
I had a bet with a buddy that there was/is a town called Truth or

I know that there are probably a lot of members on your list that do not
know about the latest anti-car hobby legislation pending in the US Senate.
This legislation would give federal funds to all states to enact scrappage
laws. I know that several states have already enacted similar laws but
they're being fought by SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Marketing
Association.
I urge all your list members to go to www.enjoythedrive.com and enroll
to receive the SEMA newsletter. There's no charge for this service, (Just
like the Bob Ford list!), and they will get updates via e-mail and/or US
mail on all pending anti-car legislation whether federal, state or local.
SEMA also provides lists of names and addresses of all US and state
representatives for you to send your protests to. I, for one, am sick and
tired of the government trying to legislate us out of our hobby! I know
that one state with the most anti-hobby laws is California, where I think
probably half of the readers of this list reside. This type of legislation
has become more than a local nuisance now, it's nationwide! Let's show our
elected officials that our hobby is one that contributes to our communities
and hundreds of charities and is not responsible for the poor air quality
that all old cars are being accused of. The fact is, most vintage cars are
in better shape than many of the newer ones. That, combined with the fact
that most collector cars are not driven all the time, precludes their being
much of a source of air pollution.
One other small point. Show me an elected official that doesn't like
riding in a vintage car in a parade! That's fine, just let them know that
there won't be any rides for people who vote against the car hobby! Thanks
