Hi, can anyone tell me the casting number on the pitman with
p/s? My GM parts book list the part number and the number cast
on the arm for both non p/s arm and p/s arm. I have one steering
box and pitman arm that matches the non p/s casting number from
the GM book. I have a second steering box with pitman arm that
has a different bend to it. I think it should be the p/s type
arm except the number cast on it doesn't match the number the GM
parts book says should be cast on it. I would greatly appreciate
any help. Thanks Mark

The term suicide doors comes about by the fact that if you open that type
of door at speed it would be suicidal because it will rip the door from its
hinges, not like a regular opening door which would merely close shut under
the same circumstances.

about the 58 nomads, i didn't believe it when i was told there was a 58
nomad, i laughed, then the guy took me to his barn and showed me his, 4
door station wagon, with nomad insignia. the only thing the same is the
chrome on the rear of the car on the tailgate, other wise its a 4 door
station wagon, not a 2 door like the real nomad.

just got new headlight switches for both cars and I am
very unhappy with the quality of the switches. You
have to wiggle them to make the lights work and you

supposed to. Has anyone else had this problem? Is
there a solution besides buying one of the more
expensive switches? Any advice or opinion would be

Hi everybody,
I would like to tell a story about buying a car
sight-unseen! A few years ago I bought a 1957 2 dr
chevy hardtop from a man in Louisiana. We talked in
great lengths about the condition of the car and he
sent several photos. From the pictures and the
conversation, the car sounded great and the price was
right! I paid the man to deliver it to my door. He
was supposed to arrive around 4-5 pm (when it was
still light out), but he didn't arrive until late in
the evening (when it was very dark). The car was
unloaded in my front yard and the man paid. Since it
was dark I waited until the next morning to inspect
the car. When I saw the car in daylight I almost
cried (and men aren't supposed to do that). If I had
seen the true condition of the car when it was
delivered, I would not have accepted it. I would have
given the man the money for delivering it and told him
to take it home with him! The story doesn't end all
bad, I was able to sell the car for what I paid for it
(not including the delivery fee). I will never buy a
car without seeing it first. I've learned my lesson,
plus I get reminded by my wife whenever I start
talking about buying a new car!

I have been in the Chevy parts business for 15 years and specialize in
original restored parts that have been re-chromed by Lemon Grove Plating in

the best chrome shops in the USA. But as Bob said quality chrome work does
not come cheep. You can contact them at 619-474-4424 and ask for John or
Hector to get prices. Tell them you heard about Lemon Grove Plating from

Bob, you need a column from the early 70s chevy pickups or vans. The ones
that had the ignition switch
in the dash. The length is a little long and will have to be cut. Also if
you are working on a 57 you will
have to modify the bottom of the dash cluster and the bottom cover. I just
finished doing this and it
makes a killer looking job.Good luck, Wade --- Wade Watts---

J Wargowski,
The doors got there name because , if you were to open the doors while
driving , or if they were to open by accident while driving, the wind would

just grab them and rip them right back. If you were to try and "catch"them,

it would be like committing "suicide". !!!!!!! You would end up just like
the
doors.......ripped right back !

Anyone thinking of putting a 605 power steering box in their tri-five
should seriously consider the rack-and-pinion option. There are several
companies that make bolt-on rack kits, power and non-power. I have had
tri-fives with stock non-power steering, factory slave cylinder power
steering, 605 conversion power steering, and now a non-power
rack-and-pinion with a big block on top of it. The rack-and-pinion is by
far the best steering tri-five I have had. I can not believe how easy it
is to turn the car when parking. I feel that my car with the rack has a
"better feel of the road" when running down the highway. Steering is
tighter and feels more like a late model car than a big old boat. I used
a Dodge omni rack and welded up my own brackets, the whole set up did not
cost $200. I now have to go to the gym for a work out, I used to just
practice parallel parking my shoe box!

Mike, both the 57 and 58 Nomad were the top of the line long roof
Chevrolets for their year, but that is where the similarity ends. The
57 Nomad was a 2 door, which was sleeker, and more sporty than the 2
door Handyman or other station wagons of the same year. In 58 the Nomad
name was used on the 4 door top of the line station wagon. When people
refer to a Nomad, they almost always mean the 55-56-57 variety, although
the name was used through 1961 on four door station wagons. It doesn't
contain any info about the '58, but you may be interested in
http://clubs.hemmings.com/sjcc/spot555657.htm. One of our club members
has a nice '61 Nomad pictured on other photo gallery pages within the

Bob,

I wrote to you several weeks ago but do not remember seeing my message
posted
on the list.

I am still looking for a water pump cone-shaped, fan belt pulley for a 235
six
cylinder. I suppose one off of a 261 would also work if it is the same
depth
as the one on my 1955 engine. Mine does not appear to be true and the fan
belt is wobbling a little. Would also like to have the spacer that fits
underneath it if possible. It is held onto the water pump with four bolts.

Hopefully I will soon be able to drive my car. A broken timing gear bent
three valves in the head and it has been a chore of several weeks to get
the
thing back together. I never knew oil pan gaskets and seals could be such
a
headache. These people must have been mad when they designed this engine.

Hi All,
This is an answer for J Wargowski about "suicide doors". Back in the
beginning of the automobile industry and into the '30s and early '40s, the
rear doors on sedans were hinged at the back, under the C pillar. By the
late '40s this had been changed in all car models to what we have today.
The doors, if opened at speed, would fly out from the wind pressure,
dragging anyone holding onto the handle out of the car, likely to their
death.
As I said, this is AN answer. Maybe not the right one or the only one. I
just remember my father saying something to that effect regarding his '41
DeSoto sedan, which had rear 'suicide' doors. Wild Bill

I just wanted to say thank you for the many things you have done for me.
Because of your efforts
I was able to buy the car of my dreams, a fully restored red 57
convertible. You spoke to a group
of us about financial planning about 6 years ago in Fullerton Your emphasis
on getting a financial
education made it possible for me to buy my dream car. I would have never
been able to do it
without your help with the many questions I had about investing.

As a side note, you told me to have only a SMALL portion of my 401K in the
stock of the
company where I worked. I followed your advice and I am glad I did. I had
just started working
at an Internet company and their stock was going crazy. Everyone knows what
happened to
Enron. Well the same thing happened to my company stock. When the Internet
stock bubble
burst, the company stock my fellow employees had in their 401K became
almost worthless.
