Bob, Regarding the Nomad owner looking for a good surfboard rack. In the
'70's I purchased a pair of "RAX" that were foam tubes with nylon straps
and
plastic gutter clips. No metal. They were easy to go on and off, stored in
the car when not in use, and looked better than the metal racks. A few
twists
in the straps cut out the wind howl and I never lost a board. Hope this
helps. Larry Woodland

...my teacher thinks the 72 Monte Carlo brakes bolt right onto my 56.
Does anybody know if this is true? If not, do you know what will easily
bolt on to give me disc?

The answer is yes, but...

The original Classic spindles have no provision for mounting the calipers,
so you need to get adapter plates. I used CCI adapters which as I recall
run about $100, maybe a little less. Most likely one of the vendors who
contribute regularly to this list can get 'em for you for less. But once
the
adapters are on you can then run disc brakes from a '68-'72 GM A-body,
which includes the Buick Skylark, Olds Cutlass, Pontiac LeMans, and
of course the Chevy Chevelle. Take a '70-'72 Chevelle, stretch the front
sheet metal, give it a fancy facelift...and you have the '70-'72 Monte
Carlo.
(BTW, the trunk lid and rear glass are identical between the Chevelle and
Monte Carlo.) Mechanically the cars are identical so those brakes will
work, along with the wheel bearings. Just get the caliper adapters.

Remember you'll also need a dual master cylinder and a proportioning
valve to run those brakes. Again one of the vendors who contribute to
the list, if they have the adapters, will most likely be able to steer you
in the right direction. This is a very popular upgrade. Good luck!

Dear Bob,
Thanks for the list, I need some advice on tires and wheels for my 57 Bel
Aire.
I have heard that when installing new radials on original 57 rims there is
some possible hazard.
The new Wide Whitewalls 225x75-14" sure look great and ride soo much
better
than the bias ply,
I wonder why I waited. The original rims have the hub cap nubs and are
51/2"
in width and the tires I have should be mounted on about a 7" rim.
If any reader has some good technical advice for changing to a new rim
verses staying with my originals
I'm all ears.Finding good straight/true original rims has been a real test
of patience.
Thank You

Gas Deterioration

For those of you who don't drive the cars too often, another story about
gas going south!
In Arizona we can grow two seasons of grass. Many people plant a winter
rye when the Bermuda grass goes dormant, that way we get the "joy" of
mowing grass year round.

I've always grown the winter rye and fill up a red plastic fuel cannister
with regular unleaded. The mower and can are kept in an unheated shed.
Usually during the winter I'll need to get more gas at least once so the
gas is no more than 2 months old.

Last month my oldest son, the designated mower, called me up at work to
say the mower wouldn't work. Sure enough the filter was good, the plug
was set right but the mower would start up after being primed, sputter a
few seconds and die. All the guides say the number 1 problem is bad,
stale gas so I poured out the old and ran 1/4 gallon of premium in it and
it ran like a champ after the old stuff was run through. So now I only
buy a gallon of gas at a time for the mower.

Just imagine what our newly formulated gas is doing to our classics! So
get out and drive 'em

Bob, a user was asking about the width of the '57 rearend and a 9" Ford
replacement. The rearend is about 60 1/4" for drum face to face. As a
replacement I use a 9" out of a Lincoln Versailles. It is 58 1/4" hub to
hub
and comes with factory disc brakes!! It was an easy swap. Ken

After reading the posts about removing the smell left from mice living
inside the interior of a tri-five, I was reminded of a problem I once had
with a 55 sedan. About 10 years ago I purchased a decent 55 sedan that
had been sitting in a pasture for about 18 years. The car had no motor or
trans, but a good body and fair interior. I stuck in a 283 with a 350
trans, put on new tires, rebuilt the breaks, flushed the gas tank and
started driving the car. After driving the car for awhile I started
finding black walnuts on my driveway. This seemed strange because there
are no black walnut trees near my house. On day I pulled into the
driveway, jumped out, shut the door, and noticed a walnut roll out from
under the car. I crawled around under the car and could not find anything
until I stuck my hand inside one of the large holes on the side of the
frame. I was amazed to find that both sides of the frame were completely
packed with walnuts. I spent the next couple hours with the garden hose
flushing nuts out of my frame. There must have been a walnut tree
somewhere near the pasture where the car sat for 18 years and some lazy
squirrel found it easier to stash his nuts in the frame of my car than to
burry them!

While waiting for my first appointment in the reception room of a new
dentist, I noticed her certificate, which bore her full name. I remembered

that a cute and good looking girl with the same name had been in
my high school class some 45 year ago.

Upon seeing her, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This
gray-haired woman with the deeply lined face was too old to have been
my classmate.

After she had examined my teeth, I asked her if she had attended the local
high school. "Yes", she replied.

"When did you graduate?" I asked.

She answered, "In 1957."

"Why, you were in my class!" I exclaimed.

She looked at me closely and then asked, "What did you teach?"
