Wondering if there is any stock GM parts to convert the 55 to disc brakes? Rotors that will work on the spindles? Spindle swap from an other car? Not interested in big dollar bolt on kits anyone can buy and install. Just wondering if over the years any one has done this. I've looked around the internet with no luck.

The most common disc brake conversion used to be late 60's Chevelle/Nova/Camaro rotors and calipers. The problem with them is that they move the wheel mounting surface outboard around 7/8" per side. I did this conversion back in the 80's before disc brake kits were available. I had to modify the caliper brackets to use them on the stock drum brake spindle and I got the correct bearings to make the setup work. I don't think there's any direct bolt-on brake parts available.

To use stock parts you would need brackets similar to these. I found this at http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedway-Basic-Brake-Kit-for-1955-57-Chevy-Car,7693.html, but most places that sell tri-five parts have them. Here is what it says: "Just what's needed to update your classic Chevy! Eliminate those archaic ball bearings and gain first class stopping power all at once. This kit will increase the total track width by 1-3/4". May not clear some 14" wheels. Uses 1969-72 GM Midsize calipers and rotors. Bolts on with no machine work necessary. Kit Includes: Brake caliper brackets, Hardware "

Sometimes it is easier and cheaper to buy a complete kit like this one below for $249.99, than finding each item separately.
"Kit Includes: 11" brake rotor, 1969-72, Brake pads, GM Caliper slide bolts, Rebuilt 1969-77 calipers, Brake brackets,Hardware, Seals, Outer bearing cones, Inner bearing cones, Spacers, Dust caps, Spindle nut kit, Instructions". It has everything except master cylinder, proportioning valve and hard lines. Some other kits have everything needed.

I bought the bracket and bought everything else separately one time. I will go with a kit next time, its is just so much easier.
