    Prepping for T 56 install

    Hey all,
I have a Muncie four-speed now with a Lakewood bell housing on a 327 SBC. I got my viper T 56 yesterday looking at it serving from memory the spline is different on the input shaft and the tip of the input shaft looks thicker than my old one. Assuming I need a different clutch and maybe throwout bearing. Let me know what you guys are doing thank you. I also bought the adapter plate for the existing bellhousing to the at 56.

You will need the newer 26 spline Chevy clutch disc and a different pilot bearing/bushing. The throwout bearing should work and so should your pressure plate, if it matches the disc.

D&D used to grind the input shafts on the Viper transmissions so they were the Chevy diameter of .592". I don't know if anyone makes a pilot bearing or bushing that's a sure fit, but I bought a standard Chevy bushing and plan to bore it out to the right size on my lathe. The Viper input shaft tip is .750". The standard Chevy pilot bushing is 1.094" OD and .592" ID. I prefer the bushings over the roller bearings, and I don't even know if you can get a roller bearing of the right size.

I shot an email to ( the gear box ) the said they have a pilot bearing for the Viper to SBC for $22. I haven't looked at the yoke on the Muncie yet but I assume it will be different also.

The yoke will definitely be different, because while the OEM GM T56s do use the same yoke as your Muncie, the Viper units do not - they have a bigger output shaft. In fact that's the most significant difference between a GM T56 and a Viper T56.

Thought the output shaft was bigger. Prolly one reason the Viper trans holds more HP.

ALSO THEY HAVE A PILOT BUSHING NOT BEARING.

Yes you will definitely need a new front yoke on your driveshaft. They call it a "Hemi yoke" and you can get them from places like Denny's Driveshafts or other driveshaft companies. I got a whole new aluminum driveshaft from them with 1350's on both ends.

I'm curious if that bushing is any more than a $5 Chevy bushing bored out to .750", or if it's made special for this application.

The Gear Box also has the adapter to mount your bell housing to the T56 and you can use your stock clutch linkage . I have this in my 56 and it works great . The people at Gear Box have all you need to install the T56 . I also got the forward shifter that works better if you have a bench seat . Don

How do you know Muncie's came with at least two configurations 27 and 32 spline.
