Number on chevy engine block located in fromt of passenger side vavle cover

What does the number T0815GF mean? It is located on the engine block in front of the passenger side valve cover.

    GF could be a 1955 265, `1957 model 283 FI or a 65 model 283 195 hp 2 barrel.

The engine is in my 57 Chevy Belair. I cannot see the number located on the back of the block. I bought the car a few years ago and I had hoped it was the original engine.

Does it have side mount bosses, 3 bolt holes on each side for side engine mounts? If so, It's from a 1965. 1958 was first year for side mount V8's

I will check for the three bolt holes. Will the number on the back of the block tell me any more information about the engine? I cannot see that number.

It'll give you the year but if it has the side mounts it's newer then 57.

If you can get the casting number and the date code off the back of the block, it will nail down what you have.

55 model 265 no oil filter on block
57 model 283 no provision for side moter mounts
65 model 283 has oil filter on block and provisions for side mounts
Finally its been restamped because GF appears to be suffix code for FI.
