    Firewall - 1957

Well, it has beem a while since I have posted anything regarding a Tri Five. I share the month between projects; One week it's the 57, next week it's the Bronco. Up until now, my focus has been the Bronco due to its complexity but I shifted gears and decided to begin modifying the firewall.

The product was provided by Joe Lutz of Hot Rod Dynamics. Upon receipt of the part, I thought it seemed well constructed and the pricing is reasonable. Very little filler during paint should be required during the body prep.

It was really prety simple to cut out all of the old material, detatch the front body mounts with a spotweld remover and slide the new piece in. Tomorrow, I'll begin laying out the holes for the master cylinder and steering column (Ididit). Also using the Ididti swivel joint at the firewall for that penitration.

As a guide for those holes, I left a portion of the firewall in tact that has the original openings. Once the final fit is completed I'll simply mark it from the inside, remove the firewall panel and finish cutting that small portion free.

The firewall is a full width unit. We chose to use the complete unit however, some have used only the section between the front body mounts/hood hinge area.

You can see the small section remaining where the MC and Column protrude.

There is a great number of spotwelds to remove.

    Trial Fit.

NIck, do you think these aftermarket firewalls are worth the $350-400 they cost? I don't know what HRD gets for theirs, but I have seen others at that price. I built mine for $60 for a full sheet of 16 gauge, half of which I still have. Then you have the installation cost. Just wondering what guys think of the cost of these firewalls. I may offer them myself.

I think it's a viable product. There is some profit there for certain. PM me when time allows.

UPS was 35 bucks, considering some freight charges in the past I thought this was reasonable. Some companies put handling, packaging and on and on in fees just to make a profit.

Yup. Just got a ladder bar kit from Jim Meyers Racing and they charged $160 to ship it UPS. That's ridiculous imo.

I have, on occasion due to a temper rise caused by total ludicrousness, gotten on the UPS site and reversed the ship to determine how bad I just gotscrewed and do a follow up with a pdf attached to an email showing theoffending vendor just how wrong they are. I have managed to obtain a refund on several occasions.
