Wow, well i guess keep me in the loop if you find someone good then. I saw their minimum order charge of $45 a while back and I thought they might be somewhat reasonable but slightly on the higher end.

Started working on my driver's side header and got the #5 tube cut out. I had ordered two J-bends on different orders from Summit, both 16 gauge and 2" OD. One was from Patriot and the other from Hooker.

After cutting the tube off it seemed pretty thick to me so I measured the thickness of the tubing and it was .060" on the sides perpendicular to the bend axis. The new tubes both seemed thinner so I measured the Patriot tube thickness and it was .057". The Hooker tube measured .047".

Sheet steel is supposed to be .0598" for 16 gauge and .0478" for 18 gauge. Just to confirm I measured and weighed the tubing....Earle's tubing (from the header) is 1.585 oz/in, the Patriot tubing is 1.517 oz/in, and the Hooker tubing is 1.328 oz/in. The Hooker tube says 16 gauge on the sticker but is closer to 18 gauge so it's going back! Maybe it's just mis-labeled. I actually ordered the Hooker tubing the second time because I thought it would be better and it even cost a little more.

I got the #5 tube welded back in, but now I have to wait til I get another tube to finish this project....damn!

I decided to test fit my lengthened rear swaybar links.....that took care of the problem.

I welded a brace to the driver's side header before I cut the tubes out, to keep the collector from moving.

This is the new tube welded in. I would have preferred to cut it back further but there's no way to weld it then. It was hard enough to do as it was:

The #7 tube is going to be a straight shot from the port to the black cut line. I think it'll look a lot better like that, without those weird bends for no reason. Should have done this long ago.

Were they tuned? If yes, then you will change the tune by shortening it. Are these Earl's units?

Yes they're Earle's headers. They're not equal length tubes anyhow. I don't think I've seen one set of "equal length" headers in all that I've messed with.

Got the header finished today. I almost screwed up...I didn't think the steering was even close to the #5 tube and couldn't really check the fit since I had the brace welded onto it. It looks like it fits fine.

Sooo much cleaner! Those headers look great. Where'd you buy the pre-bent tubing? I may want to do this to mine as well...

Paul, I just bought a couple of J-bends from Summit and cut them to fit. What are you wanting to modify? All you really have to do is grind the tube avway at the inside of the flange and cut it off somewhere below. Make sure you cut it where you can weld it again...that's the tricky part.

Called Ogden this morning and the bracket is on it's way to them tomorrow for re-chrome. It's a good thing too......all the bolt holes in both brackets are 3/8". My passenger side head has 7/16" holes in it at the two bottom locations nearest the block. Obviously, so does the driver's side head, on the backside. I checked the heads on my BBC mockup block and they're all 7/16" holes on both ends. I wonder why S&P made all the bracket holes 3/8"???? Anyhow, I got the two holes drilled out to 7/16" and cleaned up ready for re-chrome. I tried counterboring for the larger bolt heads using my drill press, and almost screwed up the bracket. I'll just turn down the stainless socket bolt heads on my lathe instead.

I imagine it'll cost me as much to re-chrome this thing as I paid for the chrome bracket in the first place.
