Thanks Olky55, your exhaust tips looks a lot like mine and it looks like they're maybe 1" or so past the bumper? Got any other pics from lower? Did Rich do some work on your car? Haven't seen or heard from him since talking to him at SEMA a few years ago.
Nick, why do you say "soot!"? The end of the pipe is below the bumper and the exhaust is directed down by the tip. Why do you think it's going to get soot on the bumper? Besides, I hope my engine runs cleaner than that.

I prefer the tips pointing slightly downward as you've shown with the black tape. I definately don't like the cut bumper version shown in the photoshopped pics.
And for me personally, I like those tips spread out toward the ends of the bumper, rather than straight back, and like them pointing down and outward...tucked up in the bumper ends just subtly enough to see them when standing behind the wagon, but not from the top looking down.

I invite you to look at the tail end of many cars with what you are considering. At speed, that's negative air space and most of everything swirls upward to include the exhaust fumes. Go to some used car lots, even new car lots and look around. Doesn't matter much, it's your car and you should do it the way you like. I'd love to ride in it B4 I'm 75, finish it!

I couldn't point the ends of the pipes outboard because they're between the frame rails and fuel tank, tucked up into the frame. There's no way to get them outside the frame rails unless I went under the frame, and like I said I hate seeing exhaust pipes below the frame. I don't mind them coming straight back but I understand it can cause exhaust to leak into a wagon under certain conditions.

Yup, kills the whole look of a nice car.
Here's a couple more pics. They don't extend past the bumper. They're tucked in about 1-1/2", and the point of the tip is 2" from the bottom of the bumper. There has never been any soot on the bumper, but I always keep it pretty clean. I have a lot more of a problem with dust being scooped up onto the rear tailpan by the bumper, but no smoke or soot.
Yes, the car was put together at South Coast. I'm pretty happy with it. They're working on our 57 now.

The past couple of days I've been working on finishing up the last couple feet of my exhaust. I cut the tips off and sanded them, then I TIG welded the tips and the last 2 feet of tailpipe onto the existing pieces that I finished long ago. After that I re-polished and installed them. I think I like the way they look. Now the exhaust is completely finished with the exception of coating the headers, which I plan to do after I start the engine.
