    New fuel tank

    Hi Lazlo
In your fuel tank photos the baffles are are folded at the bottom and sides .Did you weld the baffles to the bottom.I am making a tank and am concerned about creating ripples by welding
the baffles to the bottom .I took your advice and purchased the Tanks fuel pump .
    Thanks Mick

Mick, yes the baffles are welded to the bottom and the ends. You can see a slight distortion in it but not much. I made some short beads to keep the shrinkage down. I think if you did some grinding with a diamond pad you could make it disappear. I read on Rock Valley's site that they recommended using 14 gauge if the tank was going to be polished so that's what I did. That makes it pretty heavy, but I wouldn't go less than 16 gauge and that really doesn't save that much weight. You could use thinner material for the baffles, which I believe I did.

Thanks ,apart from holding the baffles the welding supports the bottom plate .I am using mirror finish 1.5 mm stainless.the sheet costs $200 Au .Should save a lot of polishing. Is the hole size for the sender 1.7 inches I am still waiting for it to arrive .Once again Thanks

I don't know what the hole size is that I cut for the pump or sender. I'd wait til you get the sender to make sure you cut the right size hole. I made threaded reinforcement rings that I welded inside the tank for both the pump and the sender. I think the Tanks pump comes with the ring for it.

1.7" seems small for an EFI in-tank setup. The stock pickup/gauge sender is approximately that.

They have two different pumps, one's for their new tanks and the other is for retrofit. The new tanks have a small bowl in them for the smaller pumps.

On the welding, I have a Rock Valley tank, it's 14 gauge, and there is a slight bit of distortion where the baffles are welded. Doesn't bother me, but probably unacceptable for those wanting a mirror. On the other hand, most wouldn't call it sloppy looking either.

Keep in mind that with no ribs, you need 14 gauge to keep the weight of a full tank of fuel from significantly deflecting the bottom of the tank from being flat. They are simply not anywhere near as stiff as a stock tank unless the material is that thick.
