1955 Chevy 3 speed transmission question truck or car V8 or six

I have a casting 3845122 Transmission to put in my 1956 210.I was noticing in Colvins book a difference in the internal gears for six or V8.How can I tell if this trans was for a six cylinder or V8 or truck from the numbers outside? Thanks

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think the 6 and V8 transmissions were the same, with a 2.94 first gear.

Not sure on the trucks but I think the same applies.

Make sure your transmission's bearing retainer is the correct 4-7/8" diameter, and that the hole in the bellhousing is the same. Also that you have a car bellhousing and not a truck one. A car bellhousing has 2 bolt holes on each side for the motor mounts and the truck has only one on each side.

Talking about transmisions, I have a clutch quick question. Haven't put a clutch in for a while....Does the throw out bearing have a leafspring clip retainer? Or does the trans input shaft hold it or the fork hold it in place in place? Remind me please. Thanks Georg

There are retaining clips on the fork that hold bearing in place. It slides on front bearing retainer.
