That's definately got to get your motor runnin' as they say! Looks so good Laszlo.
Now soak up SEMA, then get back home and start the buffing!
And keep the pics coming...as we're all living in your moment here.

I have always been a fan of a classic car with fantastic prep/paint. I have never been excited about "patina" which is just another way of saying "I'm too broke to afford a nice paint job, so I'll just spray some shit over the top of the rust and then act like everyone else accepts that lowered expectation for hot rods..."

Now I'm gonna get it from a few of you.

Went over to Matt's shop this morning to start the sanding and polishing. Matt decided to start with the doors and we got both of them finished outside which is as far as I wanted to do them at his shop....I'll do the door sides and bottom myself at home. We have one fender sanded and ready to polish tomorrow, then we'll start on the other fender. I unmasked the hood and sanded the topside so it's ready to polish too. The last things before we get to the body are the tailgate, tailgate hinges and covers, and misc small pieces. I'll start taking pieces home as they're finished and take the body in the trailer last.

We start with 800 grit to remove any orange peel, then sand with 1000 two or three times, then finish with 2000. Matt has been polishing after the first 1000 grit sanding to see where we are, and it sometimes takes 2-3 passes with the 1000 grit to get a nice finish. The doors look like mirrors.

Here's the finished doors back at my shop.

Here's the matte clear on the bottom of the hood....

Still don't know why the damned iphone pics show up upside-down. I'll try to remember my camera tomorrow.

Your time was well spent on the bottom side of the hood. Doors look awesome. You will have to hit a few national shows so we can all get a close up look, we went through the ups and downs also

Today I hit it hard but Matt had a lot of other stuff to do. I unmasked the body and started sanding with 800 grit on a small durablock. After that was done I started the 1000 grit sanding with a paint stick backer. 9 hours after I started I finished all the 800 grit sanding and have the roof and b-pillars finished at 1000 grit. So the roof is ready for polishing. Matt was able to finish polishing the passenger fender, and by the time I left he had half the hood polished. It looks amazing.

Tomorrow I'll finish sanding the body with 1000 grit while Matt finishes polishing the hood. Then he'll start polishing the roof while I sand the driver's fender and tailgate. Then all we have to do for now is sand and polish the dash and the small pieces like the glove box lid, ashtray, hinges, etc. if I decide to do them at Matt's. I might just take them home and finish them there.

The camera doesn't seem to capture the color correctly for some reason. When we loaded the doors into my truck last night it was under Matt's sodium light outdoors since it was dark. Under that light, the colors are awesome but they seem to get washed out under fluorescent lighting of the booth. Matt has some LED tube lights in the shop and it looks better there, but the camera still can't capture the colors. Can't wait to get it outdoors.

I leave for a deer hunting trip in Kansas on Thursday so I probably won't be able to work with Matt until late next week. By then he should have all the pieces polished.

Thanks guys! I really like the matte clear because it adds another dimension without changing the color. I kinda wish it was just a little flatter, but it looks good as-is. This is the sheen Matt likes to use, and he says it cleans easily too. All of the under-hood bracing is matte clear along with the firewall, and the upper and lower inner fenders will be the same. Everything forward of the radiator above the grille will be gloss clear, and everything below the radiator cover will be matte clear.

But damn, this is a LOT of work!!

The doors look great!! The matte clear give things a nice contrast too. A lot of extra work though, and probably harder to make it look that nice since you can't sand it smooth like a gloss clear.

Are you dry sanding or wet sanding with the 800 and 1000 grit? Power or hand?
