Got the Nomad over to Matt's shop today and discussed next steps. I still have to get the other door, both fenders, and the hood over there in the next trailer load on Monday. Then we're going to get started masking and painting next week. The dash is first, and that may be all we get done on Monday since the clear will have to cure before we can mask it off to shoot the rear of the car. I'm sure he's pondering how to tackle this job.

He asked me how much sanding and polishing I wanted to do and said it can sometimes take 100-150 hours just to do that, depending on what level of finish the customer wants. And that determines how much clear is applied. He said sometimes he sands, buffs, and sands again until it's perfect. I told him I want to polish until it's "done".

At least things are starting to happen.

I got the rest of the parts that we're going to paint now over to Matt's today. We wet-sanded the dash one last time and masked off the entire rest of the car. The lower dash is now painted charcoal with gloss clear along with the glove box door and ashtray. The top of the dash will get a padded charcoal leather cover. I think I may do something "custom" with the aluminum inserts but not sure what yet.

Tomorrow we're going to mask off the body to paint the rear of the car, tailgate, hinges and hinge covers. It's going to be quite a job masking and the paint is tri-coat so I'm not sure how much we'll get done. If we don't get that stuff painted, we'll paint it Wednesday and apply at least one coat of clear. We're both busy after that so the orange may not happen until next week.

Why the hell do iPhone pics show up upside-down most of the time? They show up on my computer right-side up. Flipping them in the directory doesn't seem to work. I'll start taking pics with my camera instead.

I spent the entire day over at Matt's shop today from about 9 to 5:30 masking the car off to paint the rear. I can't believe how much time it takes to do this stuff even with both of us working on it. We completely masked the fenders and doors except for the BelAir "stripe" down them. I masked off the inside of the fenders where I sprayed bedliner so they will be ready to paint orange when the time comes. The doors were pretty simple, but the rest of the car was a lot of work. Since I sprayed the inside of the quarters and taillight area all of that had to be masked off. So now everything is masked and ready to shoot the tan color tomorrow. He thinks we should be able to unmask it by the end of the day. I forgot my camera so I took these with my phone turning it both ways...now I'm not sure which was which.

Yes, it's a lot of work. Unfortunately there's a lot more to go. Once we un-mask the car today we have to mask the tan to spray the orange. We don't have room to turn the body upside down in the booth with the doors, fenders, and hood in there so we'll have to spray the underside of the hood and the bottom of the car and firewall separately. That means we have to mask all of that off to spray the rest of the car. The top of the hood will be gloss clear and the bottom matte clear, so the top will have to be masked to spray the bottom. Same with the body....the whole body will need to be masked to spray the bottom orange with matte clear. I didn't realize how much extra work there was for 3 colors and 2 types of clear. Lots of steps.

We got the back of the car, tailgate, and misc parts painted this morning. Matt first started with a test panel to look at what 1 to 6 coats of midcoat looked like and decided that 3-4 was about right. After the midcoat Matt sprayed some DBC blender and 2 coats of clear. The tailgate and some other parts got 4 coats of clear and they are finished.

I masked off the bedliner on the front splashpan while Matt was painting to get it ready to shoot the orange. Tomorrow we'll sand the tan on the rear of the car, doors, and fenders and work on getting everything ready to spray the orange base.

Looking good. I'm happy to see paint going on the body finally.

Most people don't realize what all is involved in a paint job until they participate in the process. I went to the paint supply store and bought 2 rolls of masking paper and 12 rolls of tape for my wife's car. Someone asked how many cars was I painting. I told them just one.

That's funny. I don't know how many rolls of masking paper and tape I've used but it's a lot. One of Matt's employees came over and looked at all my paint supplies on the table and asked how many cars he was painting.

Today we unmasked the car and the doors/fenders and sanded the clearcoat to prep it for the last couple of coats of clear later. Then we masked the tan on the doors and fenders, and Matt shot some orange basecoat and one coat of clear on the backside of the fender braces and where the fenders meet the inner fenders, areas which I didn't spray with bedliner. The fenders and doors are now ready for the white and orange base. We still have to mask off the tan on the body and the bottom of the hood to shoot the basecoat on them. Once that's done, the whole thing gets more coats of clear except for the firewall and the underside of the car which will get orange base and matte clear as the last step before cut and buff. It's hard to believe we've worked on this most of 4 days already.

I'm going deer hunting this weekend so I won't be back to work on it until Tuesday or Wednesday, but I think Matt's going to continue working some while I'm gone.
