    electric fan

    I don't see an answer to my question here, so I'll ask. If it's been answered already, I apologize.

    My 56 has a 4 core radiator in the 6 cyl location, and my 350 has a long water pump. That leaves me with 4 1/2 inches of clearance. I don't have the 2500 to spend like a friend did for a polished core support, radiator, fan set up. I'm hoping for a "junk yard" like solution. I was told a Taurus 2 speed fan would work, but it's 5 inches deep.

    I'd love something along those lines, of course, I'd install a new one. What have you used successfully?

    You can use a Spal dual 11" fan and it almost looks like it's made for a Tri5.

    After that, you need to make sure your alternator will supply enough current. Also, I recommend a Dakota Digital fan controller and three relays to run them at 2 speeds.

    You need a "puller" fan with a shroud. The whole thing mounted behind the radiator.
    (Not sure if your 4 core is a stock dimension radiator, or a wider dimension radiator like the one Laszlo shows above)

    I did a google search for "56 chevy electric puller fan" and all kinds of stuff comes up.
    One of the vendors sites that shows pics and dimensions is this one:

    I've never bought anything from them, but they show many setups for about $300.

    As Laszlo says, you need more electrical amperage than the stock generator or typical low amp alternator puts out. (Are you running a generator or alternator? If alternator, how many maximum amps does it put out?)

    And you should wire it up with relay(s) to better manage the voltage going to it. A surge of power is needed when they turn on and this can stress a typical switch (if a relay is not used).

    And a seperate "fan controller" system would allow you to program into it the low temp "fan on slow" and high temp "fan on high" settings. This will help to get it dialed in and cooling effectively. Probably a couple hundred more bucks for this...

    Paul, the Spal fan I showed fits inside the stock core support. They pull more air than any of the single fans at over 2700 CFM. The other nice thing is that it's easy to do a 2-speed setup with dual fans and a $114 fan controller from DD, the PAC-2700/2750. The 2700 was the prior generation and it works the same as the 2750 without the VCH interface. You just run the fans in series on low speed and parallel on high speed with both setpoints programmable. I'm not sure how you do a 2-speed setup with a single fan unless it's made for 2-speed operation or you use a more complex and expensive PWM fan controller. Lots of guys have used the SPAL dual 11" fans on their cars. It's the same setup offered by PRC with their crossflow radiator. Any radiator will work as long as it's in the front of the core support. The fans sit inside the core support and butt up to the radiator core.

    BTW Bill, if you decide to go with the DD PAC-2700/2750 setup I have one I'd sell at a discount. It's new and I have the sensor. I need to move to the PAC-2750 since it shares a sensor with the VHX instruments I have. I also have some high current relays to go along with it.

    Chevynut, WoW! you went overboard to give me info here, and i appreciate it.
    I've got the DD in my 66 Chevelle, with relays, on a (F**d) Contour double fan, and it works great, even at 110 degrees with the A/C on.
    I have a very weak understanding of electronics, and my friend, who helped with the Chevelle, will help me put this together for my 56. He's out of town the rest of the month, so I won't get the system in until after that.
    This looks like exactly what I need. I'll measure up my car and confirm the dimensions and order the fan. PM me about the controller and relays, and we can get that deal done, also.

    Bill, I have a customer who bought the Spal dual fans and decided to go with his mechanical fan on his Hemi (Hemi55). He may be wanting to sell them so I'll ask him. They will fit in your radiator support...I had them in his 55 support already for mockup. I'll check if you decide to go that way.

    Bill, you only need one sender for the controller, and three relays for a 2-speed setup for the fans. I think I have all the relays and relay sockets and I have the sender that's used with it that's never been installed. The PAC-2700 that I have works just the same as the PAC-2750 except it doesn't have the VHX instrument interface that I need for my Nomad. I will have to check with my customer to see if he's wanting to sell his fans and get back with you via PM on a price for everything.
