56 Nomad - what is this?

Anyone know what the opening is in the 56 Nomad taillight area below the gas filler hole? It looks like there's supposed to be a cover there, based on the 4 small screw holes, but mine doesn't appear to ever have had anything there. Here's a pic:

I haven't got a clue. I thought that WAS the fuel filler pipe hole...

So make something custom for that hole...

Lee, is that from a Nomad or wagon? My sedan filler area looks like that.

Paul, I actually started making a cover for that hole, figuring I lost it. But I don't remember removing anything from there (over the last 40 years...LOL ) so I quit. The 4 holes around it have no evidence of ever being "threaded" by installing a screw so I'm thinking there was never anything over the hole. I just wonder what it was supposed to be for.

I went out and took a look at my '56 Nomad; it has a cover attached over that hole... no idea what it was for...?

Is it possible the hole was put there to gain access to the backup light connector? BN, are the screw heads on the taillight side or the wheelwell side? If they're on the taillight side, I wonder if they can be removed with the taillight in place. And why is this only on Nomads and possibly other wagons (Robert??)? Strange.

I didn't crawl under the car, only opened the 'gas door' and looked. The top two holes are screwed in from the tail light side... couldn't see the lower screws, NOR could I see if anything was running 'thru' that panel cover (but I have no idea what it could be unless possibly for the backup light wiring since it was optional?? Incidentally, I have an NOS backup light kit in the original green/orange box if anyone is interested in it.
