    Mid-engine Corvette?

Duntov wanted to build a mid-engine Corvette decades ago, and there have been rumors of one coming for about as long. Is it finally going to happen?

I wonder how much it will cost. I'm sure it will have a mark up on the retail also, just like the previous new vette designs.

Rumor has been that "Corvette" is going to split off into it's own division, much like Cadillac. They say they may have a "high end" model that's mid-engine to compete with Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, etc. and another model (or models) that retain the current front-engine design.

That rumor has been around for nearly 20 yrs; basically it began when Dave Hill took over as Corvette chief engineer (after many years working in the Cadillac division). If you recall, one of the first things he did was go to 7 spoke wheels (ala Cadillac). He did some 'good things', improving performance and interior fit/quality during his reign, but he seemed to feel that having a high end product like Corvette wearing the Chevrolet banner was an 'insult' to him and his ilk... that was also the timeframe they began building the Cadillac XLR in the Corvette plant.. and the 'name Chevrolet' has not appeared on a Corvette since then...

THEY didn't, and probably still don't, understand that Corvette has enjoyed it's reputation over many years DUE TO Chevrolet guys 'desiring' to move up to Corvette... If the Corvette were not a Chevrolet at heart, then I personally feel that it would lose many many Chevrolet guys as fans... including me. If the Corvette were NOT a Chevrolet, sharing the many parts it shared during those early years, I would not have the five I have now... in fact, I don't think I'd ever have desired a Corvette, certainly not if it were a 'cadillac', or even if it were a separate division... (Corvette marketing people have had their heads up their rears for at least the last 20 yrs!)... I personally lost interest in Corvettes once I met and understood where Dave Hill's mindset was...

OK.. now that I've got that off my chest, I'm going out to remove my '57 Nomad from it's original chassis and slide under the Corvette corrections chassis... (with C4 Corvette components - Prior to Dave Hill's involvement!)..

That's a new step for Corvettes, has anyone here thought about using the generation of Corvette drive train that uses a rear transaxle/transmission. My boss is building a '59 Mercedes SL190 with this step up, and it's going to be a cool car!!!

Bruce Borgoin (the guy that has the silver/white 55 that I built the C4 frame for) built a 50's Chevy truck with the C5/6 drivetrain. The biggest problem with it in a tri5 is you lose the center of the rear seat. But with a center console it probably doesn't matter. It also takes a lot of modification of the rear floor to make the suspension fit since it's dual a-arms in the rear.
