Hello I've been here awhile and have tried to upload a picture of my car but it says wrong url.

I am thinking about having a 700R4 tranny put in my 55 210 Chevy. It now has a TH700 in it but I think it's seen better days. I am torn between the 700R4 or a M-20 but what I need to know is what would be the best the rear end gear for the M-20, give me the take off power but decent highway speeds as well. I was told the car has 3:55 gears but I have my doubts. It does not shift twice if I take off in drive but it will if I use it as a manual valve body but after it hits 3td it acts as if it needs another gear bad. So what would be the best gear for the M-20? I've heard of changing out the third member but being new to this I don't know what that means even though I think I do. Thanks for any help.

The wide ratio M20 has a taller first. The close ratio M21 was typically with the higher rears like the 3:73 or 4:11. I would say the 3:55 was a good partner to the M20. Have you been through the Muncie? I have built probably 30 or so and had several that were run at 75/80 dragway in MD. I would highly recommend a rebuild with the following mods: Torq lock sliders, larger front bearing, cut bushing for first and a cast iron mid-plate. Also, for the front bearing retainer, side cover and tail housing, glue gaskets on one side and then apply heavy trans grease (not oil) on the mounting side. This will allow inspection of the trans without destroying the gaskets. Run the 20 and find a 3:55 third member with the "P" cast in. You will be happy.

How do I attach a file to a post?
To attach a file to your post, you need to be using the main 'New Post' or 'New Thread' page and not 'Quick Reply'. To use the main 'New Post' page, click the 'Post Reply' button in the relevant thread.
On this page, below the message box, you will find a button labelled 'Manage Attachments'. Clicking this button will open a new window for uploading attachments. You can upload an attachment either from your computer or from another URL by using the appropriate box on this page. Alternatively you can click the Attachment Icon to open this page.
To upload a file from your computer, click the 'Browse' button and locate the file. To upload a file from another URL, enter the full URL for the file in the second box on this page. Once you have completed one of the boxes, click 'Upload'.
Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window. You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.
What files types can I use? How large can attachments be?
In the attachment window you will find a list of the allowed file types and their maximum sizes. Files that are larger than these sizes will be rejected. There may also be an overall quota limit to the number of attachments you can post to the board.
How do I add an image to a post?
If you have uploaded an image as an attachment, you can click the arrow next to the 'Attachment Icon' and select it from the list. This will be inserted into your post and can be located where you want it displayed.
To include an image that is not uploaded as an attachment and is located on another website, you can do so by copying the full URL to the image, (not the page on which the image is located), and either pressing the 'Insert Image' icon or by typing after it, ensuring that you do not have any spaces before or after the URL of the image. You can insert photos from your albums (?) in this way too.

One thing to keep in mind is the 700R4 has an overdrive and the M20 doesn't. So the M20 is going to be a compromise between street performance and highway cruising. If you want a manual transmission, imo the best choice would be a Tremec TKO 5-speed with overdrive. It's not the cheapest route, but it will give you great performance and allow you to cruise on the highway at a reasonable RPM. The M20 is a dinosaur.

What are your goals? What RPM do you want to cruise at and at what speed?

Good info Sid! I hope the OP see this. Might be a good idea (service) to PM him with this info.

Another one here to ditch thoughts of an M 20 four speed (old technology) and go with a more modern 5 or even 6 speed manual trans.
5 speed trans are going to be cheaper/easier to bolt up to a Gen 1 small block.
6 speed Tremec is made for the LS engine block. I supposed you could find a conversion bell housing to mate to an old Gen 1 small block, but why bother?
