Hi Gang,

Getting ready to re-install the glass and doors on my 55
Nomad. I need to know if there is a brad of rubber seal
that is better than another and where is the best place
to get it. I'm re-install all glass and doors, so is
there a good windshield seal from one place and a good
door seal somewhere else? I understand the lift gate is
a real problem area. I have found out on other projects
that not all seals are the same and I don't want to
repeat past mistakes.

I wish I still lived in SoCal and could attend the "Bob
Ford Night" at the club meeting and get his tips.

Keep up the good work on the list Bob.

Thanks,

Jack

Has anyone bought parts for the Car Shop in Orange, California? I will be
in California on vacation soon and if it is an OK place I will stop and see
what they have.

Editor's note. Roger, I have bought a lot of parts at the Car Shop. It is
a very big place. I have had nothing but good experiences with them.

I am a senior in high school. My dad is on your list. He has a 55 Bel
Air. I asked him why the
radio in his car does not come on when I turn it on. It takes about 15
seconds before I hear any
sound. Dad doesn't know and told me to ask you. Since the radio is all
electronic, shouldn't
electricity flow as soon as I turn the switch on?

Billie Consow

Editor's note. Billie, what follows is from my memory of 45 years ago. If
this is wrong, some
list member please let us know. Your dad's radio has tubes. Electricity
flows to these tubes as
soon as you turn the switch on. However, tubes need to be very hot before
they will work. Each
tube has a filament that takes a while to get hot. A filament is a piece
of wire that gets hot when
electricity flows through it. Tubes in radios work when electrons flow
from the cathode to the
anode. It just takes a lot of heat on the cathode to get the electrons
moving.

Here is some information you can use to show your dad how much you know
about electronics.
Unless you have a very new and very expensive TV, your TV still uses tubes.
Does everyone
agree?

Here is a related question. In a modern car, is electricity created as
alternating current, converted
to direct current, and then converted back to alternating current in the
radio?

This is in response to Fred Vail's email about his radio options. I have
the Autosound radio in the dash, with the kick panel speakers and also
speakers in the doors. I got the best speakers offered in the kickpanels
and equal speakers in the doors. The power head has 25 watts per channel
and it stll sounds bad. I don't recommend this system if you want good
sound quality. If you want to keep your car original, put the stock radio
in it with the front and rear speakers in their proper locations. If you
want a good sound system you will need to change the generator out with an
alternator to push the Amp. I would then suggest one to those hidden
radios that you hide under your seat or in the trunk. You just operate it
with a remote control.

I want to keep my 57 as stock as possible so I live with the low power
radio as I don't want to add an alternator in place of my generator. I
have heard people mention converting a stock generator into an alternator.
I don't know if this can even be done, I sure can't find anyone who says
that they can do it. If anyone knows if this conversion is possible and
who can do it, please let me know. Don't be confused, I don't want to
remove my generator and add an alternator, I want to use the stock body of
the generator and convert it into an alternator if possible.

Once again I need the help from list member to solve a installation/reto
problem.

I am installing a T-5 five speed trans out of a "92" Camaro into a "55"
BelAir.

It has a hydraulic clutch. Has anyone installed the clutch master
cylinder into a "55" and if so, can you provide any information tips on
the installation?

If not, does anyone have access to a "92" Camaro and can take some
measurements for me?

I need to establish the distance in the original Camaro application from
the center of the clutch rod post on the clutch pedal to the face of the
clutch master cylinder. With the pedal up and pedal down. Also if
possible at what point thru this travel does the clutch fully engage.

Great list Bob and thanks in advance to anyone that can offer help on this
one.

As my memory serves me, I think all of the things happened in 1959. I was
pretty young, but I do remember each of the things you mentioned on your
list. Martin Mull was on both Route 66 and Adam 12 and Little Joe lived on
the Ponderosa.

Fun stuff, keep it up and thanks.

Hi Bob,

This note is in reference to Bob Vails message about adding an in-dash
radio into a "Radio Delete" car that was built without one.

I believe that after 47 years of existence without a radio, it would be a
real bad idea to add one to a nice original 55 Chevy.

I believe in this day and age there has to be other ways to install sound
without molesting the original dash and its wiring. I know I'm a purest
and like original cars, but I would still think after surviving all of
these
years as an original, most enthusiasts would agree with me on this. Maybe
not!!!

First of all I know it's Bob's car and he has every right do to
whatever he wants to his car, but I would think it would be a better
conversation piece and even retain a higher value with keeping it
original.

I would like to see what the other members of this list think.

Thanks for the list Bob,

Additionally; Someone write that you showed them how to hold title to our
real estate correctly in order to avoid paying thousands of dollars in
taxes.

Question: Is this just for California? If not, how do we get this info.

Thank you,

Very truly,

Gary Howard and Jessica Brune

Editor's note. I am neither an attorney nor a tax professional so what
follows is just my opinion. As I
understand it, the following states have community property laws. Arizona,
California, Idaho,
Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Someone said earlier that the tax laws are crazy. I agree. For some
reason unknown to me,
assets held as community property get a stepped up basis on the death of
one of the owners.
What this means is the that the IRS will reset the basis of your home at
the time of death to the
current value. If your home went up in value, the IRS has forgiven the tax
on the difference
between the purchase price of the home and what it is worth at the time of
death. This could save
you a lot of money.

If you need legal advice, please see your attorney. If you need tax
advice, please contact your tax
advisor. Other states may have changed their laws to allow for community
property. Check in the
state where you live to see. I invite any tax pro on this list to set me
straight on any of the above
information.

With regard to the gentleman looking for rear quarter panel badging for the
'56 Chev, both the Bel Air script and the Chevy Shield are available from
C.A.R.S Inc. which has two distribution stores, in Mi and Ca. The toll
free numbers are 1.800.521.2194 and 1.800.0.451.1955, respectively. I
would think that Danchuk and CCI would also have these items available.

Bob, the year of the past you described was 1960.

Dear Bob,

Well, I'll take a shot at answering your question: I'd venture that the
correct answer is 1959. The tie-in with respect to the U-2 pilot and the LA

area traffic reporter is Francis Gary Powers. It is he who piloted the U-2
shot down over the former USSR. And, it was also he who was later killed in
a
crash of a TV news helicopter (which he was piloting) in LA.

Greetings, Bob,

As always, it's a 'welcome' treat to get your weekly newsletter. Even a
'bigger' treat when it arrives several times a week. I've found your
subscribers to be most helpful.

Enjoyed the letter from Ed Lister. As to the tape you made for him, I was
pleased to see that ALL of those artists--Pat Boone, The Beach Boys, The
Everly Brothers, and Rick (or "Ricky" if you go 'way back') are artists
that
I had the pleasure of meeting and/or working with over the years.

My first celebrity interview--at age 12--was with Ricky Nelson on the set
of
"The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet." I did the interview for my
elementary
school paper. How I pulled off such a coup at age twelve, God only knows
My
dear Mother took me down to LA and went to the Stage 5 Productions set with

me!

Of course, most of your 'regulars' know that I am a former manager of The
Beach Boys and a very close friend for thirty-nine years. I saw Brian and
Alan last summer in Indianapolis and Tri-Cities, TN, respectively. If
anyone
goes to Anaheim, I'm sure they will see Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and The
Beach Boys. Unfortunately, Alan and Mike have been feuding for over four
years--lawsuits, countersuits, the whole ten yards. It's a real shame that
the group is going through that.

I interviewed Pat Boone while in high school--I was about sixteen years old

if I recall. I met him at the historic Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. I
was
always a huge Pat Boone fan. If many of you recall, Pat was considered
'acceptable' by our parents. He was the 'clean-cut' kid next door, who went

to college, got married to his childhood sweetheart and raised a family. I
loved his movies, including his first, "Bernadine." (Bonus Question: who
played "Bernadine" in the film and what was her last name in the movie?
Bonus
Point question: What was the 'flip side' of Pat's single, "Bernadine?).

I'm currently updating my studio website and should have it up and rolling
in
about ten days. I'll have a photo gallery of a number of my music friends,
including Chubby Checker, Dick Clark, Clint Black, The Beach Boys, and
others.

Well, Bob, as always, it's been great catching up on these musical
memories.
Oh, and by the way, I'll never forget the GREAT Tri-Five Chevy video you
put
together for me several years ago. Great footage!

Regards,

Fred Vail

PS Will be taking my recent acquisition, the '55 Bel Air, to my first
'points' show in Waverly, TN next Saturday, June 1. They will be judging
cars
based on a 200 point system. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Bel Air
stacks up. If anyone is going to this show--and knows of other upcoming
events in TN, KY, AL--please let me know. Also, if you go to Waverly,
please
look me up. I also hope to make the big CCI Eastern National event in
Mooresville, NC on August 4.

The year of the quiz - 1960? Route 66 and later Adam 12 both starred
Martin Milner. The first few Route 66's had him driving a '60 Corvette,
then suddenly he was in a '61 with it's different rear end styling.
Enjoyed recalling many of the names in that quiz...

were not available with auto transmissions

Loved your last list. I can see you are a child of the 50s just like I am.
You would sure make me
the queen at my next bunco game with the girls if you could answer a few
50s music questions for
me.

Are Sheb Wooly and Ben Colder the same person?

Are J.P. Richardson and the Big Bopper the same person?

What is Chantilly Lace?

What ever happened to the Big Bopper? I never heard of him after he sang
Chantilly Lace.

Thanks a bunch
Wanda Sharp

Editor's Note. Wanda, I can answer some of your questions. Sheb Wooly and
Ben Colder are indeed
the same person. His real name is Sheb Wooly. J.P. Richardson is indeed
the Big Bopper whose
most famous song was Chantilly Lace. I have no idea what Chantilly Lace
is. Perhaps some list
member will know. J.P. Richardson was also a song writer. He wrote "White
Lighting" which
became George Jones first big hit. I believe the Big Bopper was killed in
the same plane crash
that killed Buddy Holly. Anyone know for sure?

Love your list.

I see a lot in the news about how bad LA is. Let me relate my experience
for you. I live in
Toronto Canada. I flew from Toronto to LAX to attend a wedding. My plane
was 13 hours late
arriving. I had 2 hours to make it from the airport to the wedding in Long
Beach. Since it was
about an hour drive, I though I could still make the wedding. As I was
going down the 405
freeway, the temp warning light came on in my rental car and I could see
steam coming out from
under the hood. I pulled off the freeway into the parking lot of a
shopping center. A woman
pulled in beside me and ask if there was a problem.

I told her my problem. She let me use her cell phone (it seems every
person in LA has a cell
phone) to call the car rental company. They said they would send a wrecker
to get the car but it
would be at least 2 hours before the wrecker would arrive and that I would
have to ride with the
wrecker back to their lot to get another cars. That would mean I would not
be able to go to the
wedding. I give the person back their cell phone and I must have looked
dejected. She asked if
she could help. I told her about the wedding in about an hour and that I
really wanted to be there
but I had to wait for the rental car wrecker to come and get the car.

She immediately called her son to come over and stay with the car while she
took me on to Long
Beach for the wedding. I could not believe my good luck after hearing all
of the bad things about
LA.

I got to the wedding on time and the lady would not take any money for her
efforts. So the next
time I hear someone bad mouthing LA, I am going to tell them they are all
wet.
