Bob,
I have not been across the U.S / Canadian border since all the new
security measures have come out.
However there is a truck crossing report on the "radio" traffic reports
in the morning that usually indicate at least a half hour backup minimum.

question:
Anyone out there know a good site for big block Chevy installation in a 55?

I'm using front 'L' shape motor mounts and the bell housing bolted in the
stock location. I made a cardboard template of the 96 454 oil pan, and it
appears
that I will need to get a "dropped" center steering link, because I don't
want to switch oil pans.
Appreciate any info you might have, I don't want to "recreate the wheel".
Thanks. Sid Jackson (sidchev567@aol.com).

For Bryan Mion w/ the 3 spd, 6 cyl Bel Air wanting to go to a 4 spd:

Look into column shifted Mercedes Benzs. I have an acquaintance with a '55
Chevy pickup (series II) who was looking into doing this very thing.
Unfortunately, I do not know the outcome of his ambitions. I do know that
he was looking for the shift mechanism for a column shifted MB. Apparently
there are column shifted 4 speeds.

This probably will require some fabrication skills.

Hello;
I just joined this e-mail program. I have a 1955 Cheve Cameo Pickup that I

have had for 44 years, It is not stock anymore. My kid's all had it in
school
in the 70's, it sat in a barn for about 4 years, I needed a set of wheel's,

so I drug it out. I ran a 350 Cheve engine, 350 transmission, Pontiac
rear-end, 72 Chev clip front end w/disc breaks, and also power steering.
It is my
daily driver and I enjoy other people enjoying it with me.
I need a new driver's side windshield wiper arm that goes under the dash.
For some reason and I doesn't think that I am the only one that has the
problem.
my wiper slap's around the curve of the windshield. I have taken it off
and
rebushed the rod that goes through the cowel, I installed an electric wiper

motor. I am at a loss as to what to do next.
Does anyone know were you can buy a NEW arm that goes from the motor to the

wiper arm? I think that if I could find one that is not worn out it would
be
much better. I am sure that it was not manufactured to slap on the side of

the windshield.
Thank's in advance, for the help

wanted my address add what I wanted for the car and etc . about 6 weeks
later here was a Cashiers check for $12,000.88 , Yes twelve thousand
Dallas and 88 cents . No instructions no nothing , just a cashiers check
. We put it in the bank , Five days later the bank called and said the
check was a bogus fraud worthless check . Yes I still have my 57

Hi Bob,
Just a quick note from the land of steamed crabs and soft crab
sandwiches! Gov. Ritchie Highway is still there. I'm not sure where the
name Glen Burnie comes from but it was probably an old land grant before
the Revolutionary War. Furnace Branch is a small stream near Glen Burnie
where there was once an iron forge or furnace.

As for the Interstates that don't connect to other Interstates, Jim
McEvoy said I-97 in MD, which runs north-south from Glen Burnie to
Annapolis. Sorry Jim, I-97 connects with I-695, (Baltimore Beltway), which
connects to I-95 and I-70. Hawaii, or possibly Alaska, would be the
answer(s) to the trivia question. Alaska is also isolated from the other 48
States, right? Anyone else think of Alaska?
Also, for Sandy Pierce, you're right about my typing! Sorry 'bout dat!
My spell check doesn't always work either! That clock repair place also has
a toll-free number, 1-800-558-2674.
I hope that everyone on this list has a wonderful Holiday season! Merry
Christmas and Happy Hannukah! Wild Bill from Catonsville, MD

Editor's note. Bill, the talk of steamed crabs and soft crab sandwiches
makes me want to jump on the next plane for Baltimore, get some soft crab
sandwiches and get on the next plane back. The taste of steamed crabs would
be worth the trip. <G>

The last time I ate some of these was at a place called Legal Seafood in
Boston. Odd name for a restaurant. Anyone in that area know why it is
called Legal Seafood.

For Joane who wondered why posts are less expensive:

As an appraiser and car auction addict, when it comes to market value of
cars, it all boils down to supply and demand. The sport coupe (no post)
was a sportier model and designed to look like a convertible (hence no
post in the middle). But in the 55-57 marketplace, people tended to buy
the sedans because they were more "practical". People also thought the
post added more stability and rigidity to the car. So since more cars
were produced as sedans, they are now more plentiful.

Now, in the current market place, the sport coupe is higher because there
are less of them and many current buyers like the look, "recall" in their
youth having the coupe or just want what is already the more popular
unit/s to buy.

This is why "muscle" cars are so expensive as well. Lots of mustangs
were sold, but few folks opted for a boss mustang or a cobra mustang, so
there are less now on the market place to buy/sell.

For the tri-fives as a whole, the general ladder of value is
convertibles, Nomads and sports coupes. 2 doors before 4 doors

It will cost just as much to re-paint a post as a coupe, so ride what
you've got. But if you have a post recognize the money you pour into
it, might not be recovered by a willing buyer when you opt to sell.
Enjoy the ride cuz it is still sweet!

Bob- Please post this tech question Thanks.

I had my 57 283 rebuilt about a year and a half ago. I've been driving it
fairly regularly.
At idle, esp. on summer days, the temp gauge goes over 1/2 scale-sometimes
2/3.
I checked it against engine temp. w/laser and also coolant temp. My 350 in
my
other car never goes over 1/3. Anyway, I've added a shroud, rad is correct
and
where it should be.
I used "Water-Wetter" this summer and still runs hotter than I want it to
be.
QUESTION- Has anyone ever tried using a larger main pulley to increase
water
pump rpm? It's a stock power pack/automatic/w generator mounted ps pump. If
so,
what size should I go to? Any later model swaps? Thanks, Frank

In your last list was this:

"Editor's note. I think there is a guy out here in Valley Center California
(near San Diego) that has a business that fixes the fuel injection units.
Anyone know of sure? As I remember, his name is Chuck Smith.
I wonder what those units in the trash cans would sell for now?

Yes, Chuck moved to Valley Center last year from Calabasas, CA. For many
years Chuck did high-dollar restorations on complete '57s. During that
time, though his true specialty was carburetors and injectors. He doesn't
restore cars anymore, but he still does carbs and injection units. And,
he's the best!

You can get in touch with Chuck Smith in Valley Center, CA (near San Diego)

Hi Bob
I found (and still do) the Arizona Memorial and Punch Bowl very
moving,
particularly the oil still seeping after all these years. And Punch Bowl
is
so vast and so many markers. On my last reserve annual training, I tied it

into a vacation for my wife and we drove into Punch Bowl. The markers have

religious markings, some of which I do not recognize. Deaths of military
service members is the great equalizer, sex/race/religion/etc does not
matter.

Enough of that, regarding list contributor Doug and his 59 Sprite, my
older cousin who was the first to drive in our "gang" bought a bug-eyed
Sprite but never did much with it. I believe he bought it so he could buy
the other car they had, a 1968 Ram Air 400 4 spd Firebird. Nobody beat him

for a few years until he rolled it repeatedly !! I bought the seats for my

1964 El Camino. A sad note is that he kept the rare engine but left it
outside in the cold PA weather and the block cracked, eventually scrapped
it! This was many years ago, before we now know how to save rare cracked
cast iron.

There are quite a few GM fuel injection restorers, Jack Podell comes
to
mind, and others more readily found in Corvette publications. And
"trashed"
fuel injection units start around $2500-$3000 that need parts and rebuilt.

If you start adding distributors/air cleaners/etc., to a restored unit you
might hit $10000-$15000. I am adding fuel injection to my 59 Corvette
project but not a stock setup.
You can put this on the list if you like, may be too much running on
and not enough 55-57 Chevy stuff.
Thanks, Joe Rock

Regarding several items in the most recent 57-56-55 LIST:

Certainly Hawaii has an Interstate - actually three of them - all on Oahu.
But nobody has mentioned that they are designated differently - as H1, H2
and H3
the last time I was there - than are interstates in the remainder of the
country (such as I-10 or I-95).

Windsor, Ontario, Canada is indeed actually due South of Detroit, Michigan.

My wife and I live only about 25 miles from the border and typically cross
at
least once per week. Even today, the crossing is usually quite easy (both
over
and back) as long as you have proof of citizenship, a government-issued
picture
ID, and no weapons or prohibited substances. But, the lines CAN get
backed-up. There are some times, such as Friday evenings, that we avoid
going over to
Canada. Why, you ask?. Well, the legal drinking age in Ontario is 19 as
contrasted with 21 in Michigan. So, all the folks going over to drink, in
addition to
the substantial truck traffic, really creates congestion.

A Sprite? This, and the almost identical MG Midget, were small 4-cyl. front

engine (around 1000cc to start), rear wheel drive British open-body sports
cars
(roadsters) that first came out about 1959. A bit too small for the USA,
lots of fun, but the usual somewhat unreliable Lucas electrics in my
experience.

A tilt steering column WITHOUT the column-mounted ignition lock for a
conversion project? Yup, look for just about any GM passenger car 1968 or
earlier
except the Corvair (no tilt column was available on it). Obviously, the
tilt
column was an option, so you have to find a donor car so equipped.
Personally, I'd
look for one out of a 1967 or 1968 full or intermediate-size car as these
years both had an energy-absorbing column design for improved frontal
impact
protection. The '67 columns had a mesh jacket while '68 and later GM E/A
columns
used two concentric tubes with balls that deformed under load. The '66 and
earlier cars lacked this safety feature - and the installation rate of the
optional tilt column was lower which makes them more difficult to find in
any event.

Editor's note. I have heard that even Rolls Royce uses the Lucas
electrics parts and that they
are very unreliable. Go figure. How could the most expensive car use such
bad electrics?
