Hi Bob, I am a small time collector who has acquired a

warehouse in North San Diego County, CA in which to store and

work on my cars. I am looking for a few like-minded

individuals to share the space and expense with me. I am

offering secure, accessible, indoor car storage at $150/month

and will rent out my service bay by the day/week/month for

$35/$150/$350. Because I need to jump start getting some

financial help, I will reduce the monthly rate to $100 for

anyone who signs up for a three month commitment in April.

Hi Bob and fellow list members:

Fred wrote a great article on Jan Berry. I seem to recall

that there was a period of time when Dean O. Torrance was in

the army and Jan teamed up with a fellow named Arnie for a

couple of songs.

Back in 1959-1961 I was parking cars at a private beach club

in Santa Monica. Dean would come in in his 58 Corvette or a

56 T-Bird which belonged to his girlfriend. I don't remember

her name except that she was Frank Lovejoy's daughter.

And Bob, rr in an email address stands for Roadrunner. It's a

cable connection through Time-Warner, not an old Plymouth.

Anybody out there put a Borg Warner T5 five speed tranny in a

'57 ? I know I asked this question

before, but was hoping to find the same install by some one

and pick their brains - my concern: will

I be able to clearance on bench seat to shifter. I know Hurst

makes a top load shifter with a forward

bend. Anybody done this?? Tranny came from a 89 Camaro.

Bob,

On a recent list you asked for a So. Cal. place to have a car

customized. My recommendation is So. Cal. Street Rods in huntington

Beach. The guy to speak with there is Chuck Lombardo (either Senior or

Junior). He has won the Oakland Roadster show more than once. Quite an

honor.

Their number is (714) 847-4404.

This kind of work is far from inexpensive. It all depends on what

you are going to have done.

CDM

Editor's note. Thanks for the info. I will pass it along. I know you are
correct about the cost of a

custom car. Someone once told me they could buy a custom car or a Rolls for
the same price.

hey bob just wanted to comment on the radial tire issue. we

should always check our rims no matter what tires we use. i

have had tubeless tires on stock rims for many years and never

had a leak maybe just lucky. the certain problem that will

happen is premature front wheel bearing wear. radial tires and

ball bearings [which are original equipment] will fight with

each other and the bearings always lose. the solution is to

find a pair of 62-68 full size chevy wheel hubs. they have

modern tapered bearings and will replace the old hubs

perfectly .our original drums will fit over them perfectly. to

rebuild them will cost about $30 and can be purchased at any

auto store. original bearings are about $30 each if you can

find them.always measure the offset to insure that you are

getting the right part caveat emptor.

thanks bob love the list

Bob, thanks for all the hard work on the list, if that guy

wants to know how much it will cost to build a custom car just

watch some of the latest TV like Jesse James or Spike TV, the

cars cost anywhere from $200,000 to $300,000 to build, better

start saving your pennies... Don

Editor’s note. The only way I could make enough pennies to buy a custom car
would be to work at the mint. <G>

Bob, the problem of moving an address book from one isp to

another or from one e-mail client to another is a topic that

comes up frequently at computer club meetings, and in most

cases, there seems to be no easy answer.

I lost an address book one time. It just dissappeared. I've

been leery ever since. AOL makes it hard to make back-ups of

the AOL address book. Copies can be made but often cannot be

utilized. I have begun the practice of making non-AOL back-ups

of the address book that I can use if I ever "lose" the

address book again or switch isp's or email clients. This

used to be rather tricky because the AOL address book did not

like to be duplicated in any way and one had to be devious.

Now it has become much easier.

To make the address book back up for AOL, all that is

necessary now is to highlight the entire address book list and

copy it, open a new word processor document and paste the list

in, highlight the entire list and drag a tab half-way accross,

and you have a tidy two-column address book copy. This works

in AppleWorks and in MSWord. I haven't tried it in other Word

Processors. I did try it in Word Pad and could not get it to

nicely arrange itself into columns....the columns had to be

tabbed one address at a time.

I'm sure this would not solve the problem of how to easily

create a new address book from an old one, but it is a nice

way of backing up. If the isp or the email client crashes and

data is lost, the backup file still exists. An address book

can be "easily" re-created by drag-and-drop, or

copy-and-paste. It sure beats having to find and type all the

lost addresses.

Another hint is for URLs. I never use "favorites" or

"bookmarks" options in browsers anymore. I create a folder on

my desktop called "Links" and I drag the URL that I want to

save into that folder. If I want to re-visit that website, I

can open the folder and double-clidk the link. It

automatically launches the ISP, dials in (if you have

dial-up), launches the browser, by-passes all the "welcome"

stuff, and opens the site. Pretty neat. If you use Mac, you

have an even niftier option...you can put an "alias" (or

"shortcut" in Windows-speak) in the "Speakable Items" folder.

the next time you want to visit a site, you say "Computer,

open Chevy Lovers". The computer will behave as if you had

double-clicked the URL link and will take you directly to the

site.

The best thing, however, about keeping the links in a separate

folder is that they are always there. You can make backups.

You can take them with you if you change ISPs. They can be

viewed without opening a browser. They are yours forever.

Jan Mowrey

I hope this helps someone.

Editor's note. There are some excellent suggestions here and I am going to
start using them.

Thanks for sending them in.

Also, I encourage everyone to do back ups of their data. You will be happy
you did if you have a problem.

My 1955 265 Chevy V8 has a strong vibration at 1200 rpm that

happens with the clutch in or out, engine hot or cold, stopped

or driving in any gear or any load. I have owned it four

years and 4,000 miles. The vibration has been there the whole

time.

I installed a new clutch disk, pressure plate, pilot bearing,

throwout bearing and surfaced the flywheel. It made no

difference.

I removed the fan belt to eliminate fan, water pump and

generator. That too made no difference.

Checking the timing with a light, it is rock steady. The

harmonic damper seems tight. Both mechanical and vacuum

advance seem to be working as they should. Compression is

within spec on all holes with less than 10 psi variation. The

plugs are all the same light tan color.

What am I missing?

Bob,

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but your

new service seems to be double spaceing each line.

"All the postings that your sending have a space

like this between each line."

Also, your postings are not going all the way across

the width of the screen. They seem to stop after about

50 characters.

Bob - you asked about ATTBI in your last set of comments about

the change-over. ATTBI was the old ATT cable setup, and I was

on it. It was bought out by Comcast last spring, and those

addresses should be changed, or so I understand, from

ATTBI.com to Comcast.net. I know mine was - and I had to ask

you to make that change some time back. Maybe some other

parts of the country are different - I do not know.

Editor's note. I still have a lot of list members with the attbi. email
address.

BOB

---------------------------

Bob - I got two copies of the list - both double-spaced.

Maybe we could get Fred to tell us about Dean Torrance - the

other half of Jan and Dean. His story is one of unselfish

devotion, and years of working with Jan to put on the shows

they could in the hopes it would "perk up" Jan, and give his

limited mental capacities a real lift, and I think it did. My

wife and I watched them one night in the early '90's at the

former Stateline Casino in West Wendover, Nevada at a Rod Run

held over Fathers Day weekend. I have since read some

information on him which, although my memory is not what it

used to be, indicated that he gave up or at least reduced a

promising career to go on a limited yearly tour schedule with

his old pal. He just could not see his partner vegetate away,

and did what he could to make his life brighter and more

fufilling. If only half of what I read is true, he is one

whale of a friend

Racing on the highway is illegal - I would never have done

such a thing in my younger days. Stoplight to stoplight drag

racing in a then new 195 HP 55 Del Ray stick was something

else I would never do... Did I ever tell you I once sold cars

for a living? Would I lie to you? Trust Me!

But, I assume you are referring to my note about the Great

Race. It is a race in that the winner does everything right

and gets to the finish line at the exact time he is supposed

to be there. Way back, we called them "rallies". They time a

run between stopping points each day at the correct speed and

determine that you should go from point "A" to point "B" in

exactly x number of hours, minutes and seconds. If you do it

right, do not miss any turns or stop signs or whatever, you

might eventually win the race. The winner after the several

days is determined as how far off in SECONDS he is....go to

the site http://www.greatrace.com/index.php and read up on

it. A section called Great Race 2004 Information has the

proposed route. Stopover cities are listed, and hopefully one

will be near you. I know I will miss a night of Boob Tube fun

to go see this varied and exciting part of Americana.
