Chevy license plates!

Greetings. Thought I’d drop a note to all you Chevy
collectors. Our club, Mid-America Plate Association (MAPA)
is a license plate club. Every year we issue a special
event license plate through the State of Illinois. This
year we decided to put a Æ55 Chevy on our plate. If you
happen to live in Illinois you can register these plates
for a period of 60 days in lieu of your regular license
plates. All you need to do is send me a copy of your
registration. If you don’t live in Illinois they can only
be for display purposes. Price is $30 which includes
postage. Make check payable to MAPA. There are a limited
number of these plates, only 100 pairs! Numbers are 1 to
100.

Hi Bob,

Let's do the replies to three messages all in one here.
OK?

(1) To Bill Ricklef,

Sorry I misspelled your name. It's not my spelling that
sucks;
it's my typing! Glad you got your powerpack air cleaner
for the '57.

(2) To Richard at Ilovemy56@aol.com,

The only info I have about the '56 air cleaner element I
got
from a friend. His message was as follows:

The '56 K&N filter element is Part #E-3650. You should cut
the
inside portion of the air intake snout off close to the
body so
that it isn't right up against the element. On the 56, the

snout sticks into the body of the air cleaner about 1inch.
I don't know why
it stuck in so far but if you want to get as big an element
as possible, you
need to cut off that part that protrudes. If you don't
want to do that, you
have to get an element that is at least 2" smaller in
diameter and that will
necessitate getting one that will be about an inch shorter
because the
bottom of the air cleaner body is cone shaped on the bottom
and as you get closer
to the center, you also shorten the distance to the top of
the cleaner.
I don't know if I am making sense, but it will become clear
if you look
at the air cleaner body.

Hope that helps. I have a modified '56 now and don't know
what
stock stuff to use these days. It would also be a good
idea to call K&N
directly. Here's the information from their website:

Send all product related inquiries to: tech@knfilters.com

phone:

(3) And, finally, to Ned, ghoofie1@comcast.net,

The parking light bulb for the '56 is an 1157 these days.
The
53 was the bulb used in the instrument cluster. You should
be able to find
a conversion chart for obsolete bulb numbers at Pep Boys,
or a
store like it.

Has anyone installed electric seats from other makes of
cars
into the 55 or 56 chevy. I have heard that some installed

seats from late model Lincolns.

If you have done this let me know what year and make of
cars
fit and how much modification is required.

I'm hopeing to find something that will bolt in with very
little modification. such as buick park ave. leather seats
or
Lincoln seats

The other day I picked up a copy of his essay collection,
"Tom
Dodge Talks About Texas."

Well, one of those little pieces sent me off on a reverie
almost immediately. It was about Big Jim Tidwell of
Whitney -
"The Fender Skirt King of Texas." And I thought, "Fender
skirts!" What a great blast from the past! I hadn't
thought
about fender skirts in years. When I was a kid, I
considered
it such a funny term.. Made me think of a car in a dress.
Thinking about fender skirts started me thinking about
other
words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly
a
notice. Like "curb feelers" and "steering knobs." Since
I'd
been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that
direction
first.

You kids will probably have to find some elderly person
over
50 to explain some of these terms to you.

Remember "Continental kits?" They were rear bumper
extenders
and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car
as
cool as a Lincoln Continental.

When did we quit calling them "emergency brakes?" At some
point "parking brake" became the proper term. But I miss
the
hint of drama that went with "emergency brake."

I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who
would
call the accelerator the "Gas Pedal."

Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never

anymore - "store-bought." Of course, just about everything
is
store-bought these days. But once it was bragging material
to
have a store-bought dress or store-bought bag of candy.

"Coast to coast" is a phrase that once held all sorts of
excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the
term
"worldwide" for granted. This floors me.

On a smaller scale, "wall-to-wall" was once a magical term
in
our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered their hardwood
floors
with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone
replaces
their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go
figure.

When's the last time you heard the quaint phrase "in a
family
way?" It's hard to imagine that the word "pregnant" was
once
considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for
use
in polite company. So we had all that talk about stork
visits
and "being in a family way" or simply "expecting."

Apparently "brassiere" is a word no longer in usage. I
said it
the other day and my daughter cackled. I guess it's just
"bra"
now. "Unmentionables" probably wouldn't be understood at
all.

It's hard to recall that this word was once said in a
whisper
- "divorce." And no one is called a "divorcee" anymore.
Certainly not a "gay divorcee."

Come to think of it, "confirmed bachelors" and "career
girls"
are long gone, too. Most of these words go back to the
'50s,
but here's a pure-'60s word I came across the other day -
"rat
fink." Ooh, what a nasty put-down!

Here's a word I miss - "percolator." That was just a fun
word
to say. And what was it replaced with? "Coffeemaker." How
dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this.

I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to
sound
so modern and now sound so retro. Words like "DynaFlow"
and
"ElectraLuxe." Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with
"SpectraVision!"

Food for thought - Was there a telethon that wiped out
lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's
what
castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers threatening

their kids with castor oil anymore.

Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the
endangered
list. The one that grieves me most - "supper." Save a
great
word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts.

URGENT LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

California Emissions Exemption Repeal Bill Passes in
Assembly;
Moves to senate

Thank you for your enthusiastic response to our
previous
messages regarding A.B. 2683, the California legislation
that would
repeal the state's current rolling emissions test exemption
for vehicles 30
years old and older. As you are aware, A.B. 2683 would
repeal the current
pro-hobbyist exemption and replace it with a law requiring
the
permanent testing of all 1976 and newer model vehicles.
Despite thousands
of your messages in opposition, the bill passed in the
California
Assembly and will now be considered in the Senate. We must
now focus our efforts
on the Senate Transportation Committee!

Call, Fax or E-mail members of the Senate Transportation
Committee (List Attached) Immediately to Request Their
Opposition to A.B. 2683

Our arguments are the same:

Existing law in California exempts all vehicles 30 years
old and
older from emissions testing.

California's current emissions testing exemption recognizes
the
minimal impact of vehicles 30 years old and older on
vehicle emissions
and air quality.

Vehicles 30 years old and older constitute a small portion
of
the overall vehicle population and are a poor source from
which to look for
emissions reduction.

Antique and classic vehicles are overwhelmingly
well-maintained
and infrequently driven (about one-third the miles each
year as a
new vehicle).

Legislators and regulators are feeling the heat from a
failed
effort to meet air quality goals and are looking for a
convenient scapegoat.
The old car hobby should not carry the burden of their
mistakes!

From what I have heard about brake rotors (so count this
as
hearsay--I am not the final authority on brakes) drilled
rotors have fallen out of favor on account of spiderweb
cracks
which tend to form around the holes. Slotted rotors have
been
introduced as an alternative to drilling. Slotting the
rotors
is more difficult than drilling them (requires a mill
rather
than a drill), but it is supposed to be a better way to
go.

Additionally, I believe the reason for drilling/slotting
is
not simply for heat dissipation, but more for gas
dispersion.
Supposedly the heat of friction can create gasses between
the
pads and the rotors and the pressure of the gasses can
impact
the efficiency of the braking system. In the event this
is
the case, I suspect it really only makes a difference at
the
Formula 1 level. I think my cars are doing fine with
plain
rotors. On a show car with a set of wheels which show off
the
rotors I suppose a fancy set of rotors could catch some
people's eyes, but I seriously doubt I would ever be able
to
discern the difference in performance.

Bob,
I know you are financial adviser, so you'll probably like
this one(LOL)!!
If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year
ago, it would now
be worth $49.00. With Enron, you would have $16.50 left
of the original
$1,000.00. With WorldCom, you would have less than
$5.00 left.
But, if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of Beer one year

ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for the
aluminum
recycling price, you would have $214.00.

Based on the above, current investment advice is to drink
heavily and recycle.
It's called the 401-Keg Plan.

Editor’s note. I’ll drink to that.
I love to hear success stories as some much of what we hear
today is bad news. I thought I would pass one along to
you. Ten years ago I taught a class on retirement
planning to a local group of nurses. Yesterday I got an
e-mail from one of my students in that class. She and her
husband bought a house in Orange County in 1964. They paid
$30,000 for the house. They just sold it in April when
both she and her husband retired after working 40 years.
After all taxes and expenses were paid, they cleared
$750,000 on the sale. Home prices are CRAZY in Orange
County and most of Southern California. They moved to
Monett Missouri and bought a bigger house for $100,000.
They carried back a $650,000 mortgage/trust deed on the
home they sold. They will receive 20 years of payments of
$5000 per month. These $5000 payments are MORE than their
combined retirement and social security checks. This lady
was so happy they took my wife and me out to lunch at Ruth
Chris. Isn’t inflation wonderful when something you own is
doing the inflating.

On a personal note, I moved to California in 1964. I also
bought a home for about $30,000. For 40 years, people have
been telling me real estate prices can not continue to go
up here. For 40 years these people have been wrong.

Hi. This is regarding the annual Chevy Classics
publication
put out by Super Chevy magazine. The 2004 edition carries

information about installing disc brakes, exhaust system

addition to many new photos and articles about tri-5

Get your copy at Wal-mart and pay around $3.50, rather

I don't mean to be tacky or step on anyone's toes. I just

post

would be a good area to chase down parts also once it gets
off
the ground. It is a week old and it already has received

posting the parts & cars for sale.
Give it some thought Bob, I don't mean to offend you

Hi Bob,

I’m a new subscriber to your list and have
already
seen and learned some interesting things <g>.

I was wondering if anyone on your list might
be
able to help me out. I have a 56 210 4-door sedan that I’m

trying to recreate my vision of the classic æ50's hot rod
with
and right now I’m looking for written instructions on how
to
set up my 56 so that I can do the shooting flames out the
tailpipes deal. I’ been looking around for info but
haven’t had much luck. Lots of guys say they know how to
do it
but none can seem to explain it well enough or write it
down
for me. I’m not looking to set the car on fire, just shoot
a
bit of flame out the back ala Grease. I live in a resort
town on Lake Michigan and when we cruise around town in
the
evening people are always hollering light æem up so that’s

what I’d like to do J

Also, on the more practical side, I’m also
looking
at switching out my old style, don’t stop too darn quick,
drum
brakes for Disc brake setup. Does anyone out there know of
a
definitive place to garner information on the process and
the
different configurations available? I’ve been reading a
lot
about it lately, but there seems to be a lot of
contradictory
info. Do you guys that have done this buy a kit from any
particular company? Do you just do the fronts or do you do
all
4 wheels? What is a reasonable cost to complete the
project?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of 2 vs. 4 Disc
brake setups (besides cost)? Any thing else I should know
before jumping into this project???

Any and all help with either project will be
greatly appreciated. I’m a newbie to classics waited 25
years
to get my 56 and now that I have it I want to make sure
that
whatever I do, I do it the right way.

Thanks

A friend of mine who has been restoring a 1957 Chevrolet
four
door hardtop, had just located another like find. This
other
'57 Chevy Bel Air four door hardtop that was recently
found is
a one owner. Now this car has a "rear speaker control"
knob
built in the dash for the rear speaker. How common was
this
accessory? I had never seen this before, except in photos,

where their was a separate control knob. Also this '57 has
an
original day/night mirror, door handle guards, and bumper
guards, etc. The original color was Canyon Coral. Was this
a
somewhat rare color? I don't recall seeing many this
color.
In fact my friend does not want to repaint it back
original.
All though he may use an original red.
He may eventually sell the first '57 Chevy hardtop, after
finding this car which has been in storage for over twenty

years. Very dusty it was. He acquired many extra parts for

this car at a bargin! Brian, owner of a 1956 Two Ten. VA

but I missed the last chance to meet you so I think I will
try
to get the day off this year. Anyone that is willing to
take
the time you put into this list, not to mention all the
copies
of tapes and such you have GIVEN out, is worth meeting.
You do
all of us a tremendous service by maintaining this list!

Having lived in Huntington Beach for 9 years, I spent many
a
weekend at the OC Swap Meet. It is hard to come up with
much
you can't find there. For those that haven't been there,
this
is not a used stuff swap meet. Most everything there is
new
but the community college right across the street used to
have
(haven't been there in years) a conventional swap meet out
in
their parking lot so you can have the best of both worlds.

Sounds like a great weekend. If I am going to go that far
north, I may as well go to Los Alamitos and visit the
Pasty
Kitchen. There is something else I haven't had in years
but
miss greatly. Keep up the great work and thank you!

Hi Bob,

I'm hoping that someone on The List can help with my search

an alternator mounting bracket.

I'm changing from a generator to an alternator on my '57
Chevy,
and I want to use the mounting holes in the Rams Horn
exhaust manifolds to

exhaust
manifold alternator bracket from an early Chevy truck that
would work
perfectly for this purpose - after drilling an additional
mounting hole in it.
I was wondering (actually, hoping) that a member of The

have an idea of what that bracket might be, or better yet,
have one that they
would sell tome.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can lend on this.

My voltage regulator and generator went out on the '55. Is
it
better to replace with NOS part, have the original
generator
repaired? Convert to alternator? Any thoughts? Also, any
leads
on replacing the generator and what is the going price?

Thanks,

Fred/Nashville

Thanks Susan Carey for giving me hope of finding my mother.
What a wonderful uplifting story. I know exactly how you
feel. I have been searching for my mother for many years
without success. Just on the chance that someone can help
me, does anyone know of a Roberta Heim age 52 from Goodman
Missouri?

Lisa
