Hi Bob, I hope that all is well with you. Can anyone
recommend a good
Tri-5 shop in N. San Diego County? I need a little body,
interior &
electrical work plus replacement of my fuel
tank/lines/sending unit on my 210
Wagon.

Thanks a bunch.

Since this is bit off-topic feel free to respond personally
instead of
posting to the list....

I know the other GM branches put out cars based on the
Chevy Chevelle
body style.

I think Olds' version was the Cutlass, but what were the
Pontiac and
Buick versions? I seen to recall a Buick "GS" model, was
that theirs?

Editor’s note. That is beyond my knowledge. Hopefully some
member can answer.

for a car
that was restored at home.

Hi friends-
We just received a letter today from our good friend, Don
Nisley. Don is the
spark plug behind the ever popular event known as The
Gambler Classic River Run.
Due to a major date conflict, the 2005 Gambler Classic has
revised it's
schedule. The new dates are Thursday, March 31, Friday,
April 1st and Saturday,
April 2nd. If you have Hotel reservations, you should
change them asap.

Those who have NOT made Hotel reservations should do so
asap. Also we will be
getting new revised 2005 Entry Forms soonfrom Don, that we
will distribute at
the October Club Meeting. Destroy all of the older Forms in
your possession so
you don't get confused.

Keep in mind that some of us in LACCC stay an extra day and
return to L.A. on
MONDAY. So those of us who want to return with us will need
Hotel reservations
from Thursday night through Sunday night (April 3rd).

New Forms and news as available. -Jerry:>)

hi

ok.
by the way, seems that 57 belairs are getting more rare
lately. do you
see any good one's in your travels around the net or in
your area?

Editor’s note. I have seen some at the Long Beach and
Pomona Swap meet. The “asking” prices seems to be in the
high 20s. Is this other people’s experience?

Bob
Please post this in your newsletter as I think it should be
a warning
to all.

I had a heck of an experiance over the Labor Day weekend.
I was
surfing through ebay looking at 57 Chevy stuff and I saw a
Nomad that looked
just like mine. In fact the more I looked, the more I
realized that it
was my Nomad. Someone had taken photos of my Nomad it
while it was at the
Pomona Swapmeet and posted it on ebay as if it were his
car. He listed
it as a One day listing only. Remember this was a 3 day
holiday weekend
so he figured he could get away with it.

The ad looked great, the photos showed the car off very
well. In fact
I wish it had been my ad, it looked so good. I called a
friend and had
him look it up on ebay and he noticed that he was even in a
couple of
the photos. He tried to contact the seller to ask about the
car but couldn't get
through to him.

I emailed ebay about it and called the cops the next day
too. By the
time the cops showed up, it was off ebay. So I guess my
email worked.
But this is something we should all be aware of, weather we
are selling
or buying a car, BEWARE. There are bad guys everywhere out
there.

I don't think I would have lost anything, except time and
trouble but
it would have been a real pain had he sold the car. My
license plate
was easily read on the photos so they could have found the
real owner and
I would have had to spend time and maybe money to explain
my way out of
the mess.

Hope I gave a few of you something to think about and if I
helped a few
of you, great.

Thanks again to Bob for his service to all of us tri-five
folks.

Oh, by the way, the 57 Nomad is still available if anyone
is
interested. I am selling it below NADA.com guidelines.
Email me and I can send
photos and info out to you.

Editor’s note. I thought I had heard of all the scams but
this is a new one on me. A friend told me about another
scam on ebay that works like this. You see a product on
ebay that has a “buy it now” price for a very low price.
It says standard shipping rates apply. After you buy the
item, the shipping rate quoted to you is 10 to 50 times
what they actually cost.
BOB

From:WSSmolick@aol.com

To Tom Cone regarding his '57 2dr wagon with "rare BelAir
option"-
where did this info come from? As far as I know, there was
no '57 BelAir
2dr wagon besides the Nomad. There was a BelAir 4dr wagon,
which is not
at all rare. I'd like to have some supporting evidence
that this car
is a BelAir from the factory. Does it have the long crown
moldings;
does the VIN start with 'C' or 'VC'? There are many other
smaller hints
that are usually overlooked in a 150 or 210-to BelAir
conversion. So
many sellers try to pass their car off as a rare car, when
in actuality
it is only a conversion.

Hi Bob:
I enjoy your news letters with interest. One article was
buying a car
without checking it out. I think it would be worth a plane
ticket to
fly and see the car first hand to decide if you want to
purchase it or
not. It might cost you a few hundred dollars, but might
save you a few
thousand in headaches.

Hi Gerry-
Whew!! Glad it was a "simple" fix!! I'm passing this on to
the gang!

The symptom Gerry Gill saw with his '56 Chevy was a hard
brake pedal
when stopping, after a major brake job where he replaced
almost
everything including the brake lines. The Pedal was hard,
but car was very
reluctant to stop. It took a few scarey months to figure
this out. His
message applies to any older car, regardless of make, as
long as it has drum
brakes. Please read this message and pass it on to others.

Subject: Brake problem/solution

I'm passing this on as it may be valuable for anyone
working on their
stock brakes.

Have been thinking about my brake problem a while. I told
you I had
replaced everything but the rear drums but they looked very
good so
didn't.

I pulled them off and looked them over again. I measured
them and they
have been turned .060" which is within spec. However, I
also mentioned to
you that I couldn't find anyone to arc the shoes - they
just don't do it
anymore. I also found out why. I found a guy at Magic
Muffler who had
the equipment to arc them but he said with all the dust and
warnings about
fiberous materials (even though they don't use asbestos)
that no one
will arc shoes.

With the fairly new riveted linings (about 300 miles) I
found that
there is only about 55% lining contact with the turned
drums. I bought new
drums and there is now about 80% but overall they track
much closer. I think
they will wear in fairly soon. A test drive today showed
much improvement
in braking. I had also bought soft bonded linings which
the guy at NAPA
said would wear in much quicker (and wear out much
quicker). They only had
about 60% contact so I used the almost new riveted linings
and will try them
for a while.

Unfortunately Raybestos and Bendix don't make their premium
drums for
our old cars anymore. The ones I got were from NAPA made
by United Brake
Parts and they are made in the U.S. to OEM specs. Same
with linings - you
can't really get premium linings (which are arced to an
unturned drum) for
our chevy's although Bendix does make the riveted linings.
(Factory
linings were not riveted but everyone I've asked says get
riveted). The drums
were $60 and depending where you look, go up to almost $100
each. Danchuck
lists theirs for $50 but they may come from China. Anyway,
part prices are
going up for the classics. By the way the Bendix riveted
linings are carried
by NAPA but you have to ask for Bendix or you get United.

Feels much better driving a car that stops easier.

Hi Bob,

Although I have not contributed a writing to the list for a
long time, I do read
it. Thanks for all of the hard work and knowledge you
share with us "Car Crazy"
tri 5 Chevy lovers.

On your recent list, a writer indicated they had a two door
'57 Chevy wagon in
Bel air trim. Stated 206 were made. Is this true? No
were in my information
has a vehicle like this ever been mentioned. That is with
the exception of a
workman wagons and sedan delivery having Belair trim added
by their owners. Was
such a thing ever done buy the factory? I would like to
see a tracing of the
cars vin code.

There were also several people warning about buying a car
unseen. I would offer
to look at a vehicle in the Baltimore/Washington/Northern
Virginia area for
anyone making a long distance inquiry about a car. As a
salesman, I travel these
areas regularly. I also have a digital camera to e-mail
photos if need.

Again Bob, please keep up the great service you provide to
help keep the
interest in these cars alive.

Although they have their place, there are no tuner cars in
my garage!

For what its worth, the phone scam warning results in more
questions. Do an
Internet search for area codes, 809 is the Dominican
Republic. Area code 284 is
the British Virgin Islands and shows split from area code
809.
The bottom line is do not call area codes that are unknown.
Check in your phone

If you sell on ebay and a buyer demands 1/2 their money
back or give
bad feedback, just email ebay with that email attached.
That buyer will be
barred from ebay, and if that person does leave negative
feedback, ebay
will remove it.

the seller instead of sending e-mail. Either way it is

Here is a question for the list members? I have seen
several references to the Chevy 348 motor
as a truck motor even though is in several cars. Where
did
the reference to truck motors come
from?

Also, some tire shops are not advertising they put
nitrogen
in tires instead of air. Does anyone
know it that is a good thing?

SANDRA
Aircraft have used nitrogen instead of "air" in filling
their tires for years.
Nitrogen will eliminate the possibility of rust inside the
rim, and potential
failure on an aircraft wheel is potential death.

hey bob regarding the guy who had his car shipped. I own
auto transporters of
naples in naples fl. we own our trucks or they are leased
to my company, there
are many transport brokers that do not have their own
truck but call truckers
to haul your car. some of these do not have the proper
bond , and if the are
brokers, they only have to have a $10,000 bond and to
attach that bond is a act
of god. anyone that ships there car needs to deal directly
with a trucking
company . not brokers! many of the companies that are in
the yellow pages are
brokers. how much are the cars worth that you buy and need
shipped, if there
more than $10,000 you need too deal with the trucker

Bob, as Ebay seller, I don't give feedback for buyer until
I get Pos.
from him. At least then you can pay him back with a Neg.
There are several
feedback provider websites that do that automatically for
sellers.
Also, the extortion of which you speak is against Ebay
rules and should be
reported. Save the email from the thief for proof.

Amos.

Editor’s note. Good idea Amos. I recently got ripped off
by a buyer on e-bay. It was not a lot of money. They paid
for the item with their credit card on PayPal. After they
got the item, they claimed it did not work. They had their
credit card company withdraw the payment from PayPal. I
could not prove it did not work without seeing it, so I
asked them to ship it back to me. I told them to send it
COD for the amount of the postage to ship it back to me.
They refused and told me it might get lost in the mail.
They now have the product and did not pay for it. I
informed ebay but they did not do anything about it.

Hello Bob,

Can you please place this ad on you site?
Thanks, Dan
1957 Chevy 150, 2 door sedan

I recently purchased a 1957, 150 Series, 6 cylinder 3 speed
standard from one of
our members. This 57 was purchased by her father new in
1957 and given to her sister. In 1958
the sister sold it to her sister, our member, as she wanted
to purchase a new
1958 Chevy.
Our member has owned this car up until she went into a
nursing home in 1996.
Before she went into the home, the Club said that they
would like to help her
keep her car running and had a local restoration shop,
Jerry DixonΓÇÖs Klassic
Cars, do some work on it.
The car received a new paint job, same color. Tune up,
tires, brakes, radiator
flush and recovered the seat section of both seats.
All of this information is documented with papers that I
received when I
purchased it.
Then our member had to be put into the nursing home and no
longer able to drive.
She contacted the family members and one of her nieces
wanted the car. So they
purchased the car in 1996 and drove it to their garage
where it sat until they
decided to move. They needed to sell the car so they
contacted me to see if
anyone from the Club would be interested in it.
I went to see the car with my trailer and brought it home.

The car is Turquoise & White. All new rubber seals, 6
cylinder runs great.
Cigarette lighter and clock delete plates. Radio does not
work. No body damage.
The Turquoise paint it showing some cracking in the rear.
This was due to the
fact the garage they stored it in didnΓÇÖt have a door
so it was subject to the
elements.
The car has under the dash Air that works and blows cold.
It runs and drives
great.
Oh, by the way, it has 19616 actual miles…
When you drive this you will see.
Asking $13,750.00 for this wonderful car.
