Bob - I was wondering if you or someone in the club would
know where I
could buy a set of adapter brackets for the 265 V8 head /
old style
(staggered bolt pattern) to accept the later style
(in-line bolt pattern) valve
covers. I have just bought a set of custom valve covers
but they are the
later style bolt pattern. I understand these were
available at one time but
I am having a difficult time finding them now. If anyone
could lead me in
the right direction I would sure appreciate it.

Bob - I have just acquired a 1955 Chevy Bel Air Convertible
with a 265
V8 and was wondering if the 265 is like most other Chevy
small blocks as
far as parts interchangeability. Is it possible to use
manifolds, heads,
valve covers, exhaust, etc, from other size small blocks
like is commonly
done with the 283, 327, and 350? As you can probably tell,
this is the
first 265 I have worked with and would like to know what my
options are for
adding various parts to the motor.

Hi Bob,
I realize it is winter for most of you but thought I'd
still provide a
cautionary tale on overheating radiators. Last year (in
November) I
noticed my car temperature gauge rising while sitting in
line waiting
to
enter a Goodguys show when the weather had to be no more
than 60
degrees.
Not good. Over the next fw months I noticed that at idle
after short
drives the needle would rise but drop down when the car was
moving.
Nothing I did could seem to fix it and since the car had
always run
cool
I was perplexed. Finally a trusted mechanic suggested
having it rodded
out at a radiator shop. Well being cheap I first tried a
do-it- your
self chemical flush and not much dirt or sediment came out.
So I pulled out the radiator and the local shop here rodded
it out and
said it was 80% blocked !!!! Dropped it back in two days
later (after
a
fresh paint job on the radiator) and the gauge is back to
the way cool
side. We even took it on a cruise through downtown Tempe
as part of a
three day show and while others had troubles our 57 just
purred along.
So if you start having overheating problems, consider
taking it to a
shop for a rodding.
PS My son's 68 Camaro also had work on a new engine
this summer
so since everything was apart we figured it would be cheap
insurance to
rod out that radiator. His was 50% and yes we always use
antifreeze, so
not too sure where the sediment comes from (except for old
age and high
mineral content of the water).

56 Chevy 210 Townsman Wagon
265 V8 with Powerglide. Porsche red paint 7 years ago,
some paint cracking.
Goodrich Radial TA's on polished American Mags. Original
bench seats and door
trim were redone in black vinyl 10+ years ago, otherwise
interior is very
original. Car is very solid, tailgate window frame and
spots on lower doors
have some rust. No dents or dings, stainless and bumpers in
excellent shape.
Runs and drives good, engine drips oil, but motor runs
strong. CA built car,
spent most its life in CA, 12 years in CO as a daily
driver, then last 5 years
in MN where it has been driven less than 2000 miles per
year and stored winters.

Hello Bob, Diesels , I use them where ever possible ! Cut
fuel
consumption by half on nearly all applications . Soot from
exhaust of a
diesel is a part of what is needed to grow crop's for food
to feed the
world . ( potash ) A forest fire , for example , will leave
ash (
potash ) for the new growth of tree's . The list is
endless . Plus ,
Diesels produce much less carbon dioxide etc .
What most people don't understand is , The power output
and speed
of a Diesel engine is completely controlled by the amount
of injected fuel .
There are NO throttle plates . Gas engines HAVE throttle
plates even
the multiport injected engines .Years ago Chrysler & Ford
tried to
perfect a layered charge injection engine or a another name
was (
stratified charge engine ) The idea was great but
problems with
idling. Was mechanically injected but was spark lit ( with
spark plug's )
Diesels are compression lit . ( no spark plug's )
But being from Nebraska, I have no idea what the
pollution is like in
the big city's , When I have to go to Omaha , that is bad
enough .

Editor's note. I once owned a VW DIESEL RABBIT. I used it
for many years. When I was
going to sell it I tried to think of every good point about
the car. Here is one I bet nobody would
ever consider. In a crash when the fuel tank is ruptured,
it will not explode like a gas tank will.

Don't worry about your old analog TV becoming obsolete
anytime soon....
The FCC keeps pushing the deadline for all TV broadcasts to
"go digital" back, and back, and back.
The earliest possible date you'll need a converter is now
2009.
That's the date the FCC now says all stations must
broadcast
in digital only (and THAT date is subject to change).

Thanks for the nice words in the last list. You are
correct that TV will change
from analog to digital. The F.C.C. had set a time of 2006
to complete the
transition. Ain't gonna' happen though! There isn't
enough market penetration
of digital TV sets to make the change practical yet. If
Congress had mandated
that all digital TV would be "high-definition" it would
probably happen. Of
course, they didn't; only "digital", and as a result
several broadcast companies
planned to run multiple streams of STANDARD-definition TV
on their newly
bestowed digital channel and sell more commercials in each
stream. Heck, there
isn't enough decent programming for one channel, let alone
more! Blame the
lobbyists. Anyway, almost all U.S. television stations
have a second
transmitter now in the U.H.F. band to broadcast digital and
high-definition
signals (and no, they aren't the same thing). The one I
work at transmits
digital and H.D.T.V., but the Management refers to the
digital U.H.F. channel as
a "science experiment"! In short (too late for that!),
don't worry about buying
a new TV. There's too much money involved for Congress to
just eliminate a
large chunk of the population's (make that read
ELECTORATE's) main source of
information and entertainment.
And, you should be aware that if you're watching on cable
or satellite you're
already getting digital signals anyway (at least from most
companies). They're
being converted to analog in the set-top box (H.D. takes a
different box, by the
way). When the time comes (and who knows when that will
be) you'll just need a
box similar to that one to display OVER-THE-AIR digital
signals on older analog
TV's. Conversely, you'll also need a converter box to see
old analog
videotapes on new digital TV's, unless your analog V.C.R.
has a digital output.
And look on the back of your current set-top box, too, to
see if it has a
digital output. If so, you can just change to a different
jack when you get
that new digital set. D.V.D.'s are digital, by design.
They all have digital
outputs already. And, if you're buying a new TV set be
sure to ask the salesman
what flavors of video the thing will accept. The new
digital ones will likely
have a built-in converter to permit analog signals from
older sources. And, you
know, most broadcast stations are "simulcasting" their
analog signal to the
digital channel anyway. You'll see the same program. It
will look a TINY bit
better because of technical processing and richer colors in
the newer displays
but, other than that, it's the S.O.S. You may as well
think about get a
high-definition set; not just a "digital" reciever. I'm
going to. The H.D.T.V.
pictures are REALLY that good! One more most-important
thought, SHOP BEFORE YOU
BUY!!! This digital/analog stuff can get really
complicated. Have I confused
you yet?

world cruise. According to Old Cars price
guide, a 57 Convertible in number 1 condition is worth
$63,000. If it is in number 2 condition it
is worth $44, 100. Add 20 percent for fuel injection. Add
10 percent for A/C and 15 percent for
Power Pac.

Some useful information (I hope). I moved to California in
1964. I purchased a home with a VA loan (nothing down) for
$30,000. It was a 1300 square feet 3 bedroom, 2 bath home
in Anaheim California. The interest rate on the loan was
4 percent. I happen to drive by that house yesterday and
there was a sold sign on it. I checked with the selling
agent and that house had sold for $410,000.
Lets see. If I had kept that house as a rental, and sold
it instead of the former owner, I would have made
$$$$$$$$$$. I hope my wife does not see this message. <G>

(staggered bolt pattern) to accept the later style
(in-line bolt pattern) valve
covers. I have just bought a set of custom valve covers
but they are the
later style bolt pattern. I understand these were
available at one time but

Bob - I have just acquired a 1955 Chevy Bel Air Convertible
with a 265
V8 and was wondering if the 265 is like most other Chevy
small blocks as
far as parts interchangeability. Is it possible to use
manifolds, heads,
valve covers, exhaust, etc, from other size small blocks
like is commonly
done with the 283, 327, and 350? As you can probably tell,
this is the
first 265 I have worked with and would like to know what my
options are for
adding various parts to the motor.

Hi Bob,
I realize it is winter for most of you but thought I'd
still provide a
cautionary tale on overheating radiators. Last year (in
November) I
noticed my car temperature gauge rising while sitting in
line waiting
to
enter a Goodguys show when the weather had to be no more
than 60
degrees.
Not good. Over the next fw months I noticed that at idle
after short
drives the needle would rise but drop down when the car was
moving.
Nothing I did could seem to fix it and since the car had
always run
cool
I was perplexed. Finally a trusted mechanic suggested
having it rodded
out at a radiator shop. Well being cheap I first tried a
do-it- your
self chemical flush and not much dirt or sediment came out.
So I pulled out the radiator and the local shop here rodded
it out and
said it was 80% blocked !!!! Dropped it back in two days
later (after
a
fresh paint job on the radiator) and the gauge is back to
the way cool
side. We even took it on a cruise through downtown Tempe
as part of a
three day show and while others had troubles our 57 just
purred along.
So if you start having overheating problems, consider
taking it to a
shop for a rodding.
PS My son's 68 Camaro also had work on a new engine
this summer
so since everything was apart we figured it would be cheap
insurance to
rod out that radiator. His was 50% and yes we always use
antifreeze, so
not too sure where the sediment comes from (except for old
age and high
mineral content of the water).

265 V8 with Powerglide. Porsche red paint 7 years ago,
some paint cracking.
Goodrich Radial TA's on polished American Mags. Original
bench seats and door
trim were redone in black vinyl 10+ years ago, otherwise
interior is very
original. Car is very solid, tailgate window frame and
spots on lower doors
have some rust. No dents or dings, stainless and bumpers in
excellent shape.
Runs and drives good, engine drips oil, but motor runs
strong. CA built car,
spent most its life in CA, 12 years in CO as a daily
driver, then last 5 years
in MN where it has been driven less than 2000 miles per
year and stored winters.

Hello Bob, Diesels , I use them where ever possible ! Cut
fuel
consumption by half on nearly all applications . Soot from
exhaust of a
diesel is a part of what is needed to grow crop's for food
to feed the
world . ( potash ) A forest fire , for example , will leave
ash (
potash ) for the new growth of tree's . The list is
endless . Plus ,
Diesels produce much less carbon dioxide etc .
What most people don't understand is , The power output
and speed
of a Diesel engine is completely controlled by the amount
of injected fuel .
There are NO throttle plates . Gas engines HAVE throttle
plates even
the multiport injected engines .Years ago Chrysler & Ford
tried to
perfect a layered charge injection engine or a another name
was (
stratified charge engine ) The idea was great but
problems with
idling. Was mechanically injected but was spark lit ( with
spark plug's )
Diesels are compression lit . ( no spark plug's )
But being from Nebraska, I have no idea what the
pollution is like in
the big city's , When I have to go to Omaha , that is bad
enough .

Editor's note. I once owned a VW DIESEL RABBIT. I used it
for many years. When I was
going to sell it I tried to think of every good point about
the car. Here is one I bet nobody would
ever consider. In a crash when the fuel tank is ruptured,
it will not explode like a gas tank will.

Don't worry about your old analog TV becoming obsolete
anytime soon....
The FCC keeps pushing the deadline for all TV broadcasts to
"go digital" back, and back, and back.
The earliest possible date you'll need a converter is now
2009.
That's the date the FCC now says all stations must
broadcast
in digital only (and THAT date is subject to change).

Thanks for the nice words in the last list. You are
correct that TV will change
from analog to digital. The F.C.C. had set a time of 2006
to complete the
transition. Ain't gonna' happen though! There isn't
enough market penetration
of digital TV sets to make the change practical yet. If
Congress had mandated
that all digital TV would be "high-definition" it would
probably happen. Of
course, they didn't; only "digital", and as a result
several broadcast companies
planned to run multiple streams of STANDARD-definition TV
on their newly
bestowed digital channel and sell more commercials in each
stream. Heck, there
isn't enough decent programming for one channel, let alone
more! Blame the
lobbyists. Anyway, almost all U.S. television stations
have a second
transmitter now in the U.H.F. band to broadcast digital and
high-definition
signals (and no, they aren't the same thing). The one I
work at transmits
digital and H.D.T.V., but the Management refers to the
digital U.H.F. channel as
a "science experiment"! In short (too late for that!),
don't worry about buying
a new TV. There's too much money involved for Congress to
just eliminate a
large chunk of the population's (make that read
ELECTORATE's) main source of
information and entertainment.
And, you should be aware that if you're watching on cable
or satellite you're
already getting digital signals anyway (at least from most
companies). They're
being converted to analog in the set-top box (H.D. takes a
different box, by the
way). When the time comes (and who knows when that will
be) you'll just need a
box similar to that one to display OVER-THE-AIR digital
signals on older analog
TV's. Conversely, you'll also need a converter box to see
old analog
videotapes on new digital TV's, unless your analog V.C.R.
has a digital output.
And look on the back of your current set-top box, too, to
see if it has a
digital output. If so, you can just change to a different
jack when you get
that new digital set. D.V.D.'s are digital, by design.
They all have digital
outputs already. And, if you're buying a new TV set be
sure to ask the salesman
what flavors of video the thing will accept. The new
digital ones will likely
have a built-in converter to permit analog signals from
older sources. And, you
know, most broadcast stations are "simulcasting" their
analog signal to the
digital channel anyway. You'll see the same program. It
will look a TINY bit
better because of technical processing and richer colors in
the newer displays
but, other than that, it's the S.O.S. You may as well
think about get a
high-definition set; not just a "digital" reciever. I'm
going to. The H.D.T.V.
pictures are REALLY that good! One more most-important
thought, SHOP BEFORE YOU
BUY!!! This digital/analog stuff can get really
complicated. Have I confused
you yet?

guide, a 57 Convertible in number 1 condition is worth
$63,000. If it is in number 2 condition it
is worth $44, 100. Add 20 percent for fuel injection. Add
10 percent for A/C and 15 percent for
Power Pac.

Some useful information (I hope). I moved to California in
1964. I purchased a home with a VA loan (nothing down) for
$30,000. It was a 1300 square feet 3 bedroom, 2 bath home
in Anaheim California. The interest rate on the loan was
4 percent. I happen to drive by that house yesterday and
there was a sold sign on it. I checked with the selling
agent and that house had sold for $410,000.
Lets see. If I had kept that house as a rental, and sold
it instead of the former owner, I would have made
$$$$$$$$$$. I hope my wife does not see this message. <G>
